Explicit versus implicit social cognition testing in autism spectrum disorder.

Although autism spectrum disorder is defined by reciprocal social-communication impairments, several studies have found no evidence for altered social cognition test performance. This study examined explicit (i.e. prompted) and implicit (i.e. spontaneous) variants of social cognition testing in autism spectrum disorder. A sample of 19 adolescents with autism spectrum disorder and 19 carefully matched typically developing controls completed the Dewey Story Test. 'Explicit' (multiple-choice answering format) and 'implicit' (free interview) measures of social cognition were obtained. Autism spect

Impulse control disorders in Parkinson's disease: the role of personality and cognitive status.

This study reviews empirical findings on two debated issues related to the phenomenon of impulse control disorders (ICD) in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) treated with dopamine agonists: the role of "premorbid" or "baseline" personality traits and the role of cognitive status. A review of both these issues may help clinicians to understand why only some PD patients, when treated with dopamine agonists, develop an ICD: besides the treatment, which other neuropsychiatric characteristics represent a risk factor to develop an ICD? A literature review was performed on studies of ICD in PD p

Discerning thoughts from feelings: the cognitive-affective division in eating disorders.

This article delineates the phenomenon of "cognitive-affective division" in eating disorders, used to refer to the difficulty some patients face in translating what they "think" cognitively to what they "feel" emotionally. A clinical description of cognitive-affective division is first presented, drawing on existing research, before moving on to discuss psychological theories that might shed some light on this often-seen but seldom understood phenomenon. These include the role of emotion awareness and alexithymia, cognitive and emotional development, and neuropsychological theories. We discuss

Cognitive structure of writing disorders in Russian: what would Luria say?

Acquired disorders of writing in the Russian language have been reported for more than a century. The study of these disorders reflects the history of Russian neuropsychology and is dominated by the syndrome approach most notably by the writings of Luria. Indeed, our understanding of acquired dysgraphia in Russian speakers is conceptualized according to the classical approach in Modern Russia. In this review, we describe the classical approach and compare it to the cognitive neuropsychological models of writing disorders that are developed to explain dysgraphia in English and in other Western

Maternal hypertensive disorders during pregnancy and mild cognitive limitations in the offspring.

BACKGROUND: It remains unclear whether maternal hypertensive disorders could impact cognitive development of the child. The aim of this study was to explore the association between hypertensive disorders and other maternal biological and social factors on the risk of mild cognitive limitations (intelligence quotient 50-85) in the offspring. METHODS: An 11.5-year follow-up study of the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1986 (n = 9432) was utilised. The analysis included 8847 singleton children, of whom 198 had mild cognitive limitations. Gestational hypertension was defined as de novo hypertension

[Efficacy of cognitive behavioral therapy in the treatment of mood and anxiety disorders in adults].

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) represents that form of psychotherapy which has most research data to build on in the treatment of mood and anxiety disorders for adults. In this review we will introduce CBT and present the results of pertinent outcome research. Efficacy at the end of treatment is discussed, as well as long term effectiveness and the efficacy of combined treatment with medication and CBT. In addition, we discuss the pros and cons of group CBT compared to CBT in individual format, and comorbidity of mental disorders. According to this review CBT is efficacious for major depre

The effectiveness of enhanced cognitive behavioural therapy for eating disorders: an open trial.

The aim of this study was to examine the effectiveness of Enhanced Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT-E) for eating disorders in an open trial for adults with the full range of eating disorders found in the community. The only previously published trial of CBT-E for eating disorders was a randomised controlled trial (RCT) conducted in the U.K. for patients with a BMI ≥ 17.5. The current study represents the first published trial of CBT-E to include patients with a BMI<17.5. The study involved 125 patients referred to a public outpatient clinic in Perth, Western Australia. Patients attended, on a

Trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy of a child with posttraumatic stress disorder.

This case study involves the use of Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to treat a preadolescent male patient referred to the Delaware public mental health system due to a history of family violence and symptoms associated with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder. Pre- to post-treatment data on self- and parent-report measures demonstrate symptom reduction and exemplify the effectiveness of the model. Data on parent participation in the session and facilitation of trauma discussion at home illustrate the parent's contribution to the therapeutic process. Excerpts of clinical dialogue between

A comparative study of cognitive deficits in patients with delusional disorder and paranoid schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Very few studies have evaluated the neurocognitive functions of patients with persistent delusional disorder. AIM: To study the neurocognitive profile of patients with delusional disorder and compare it with those of patients with paranoid schizophrenia and healthy control subjects. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Attention concentration, executive functions, memory, and IQ were assessed in 20 patients with delusional disorder and were compared with 20 patients with paranoid schizophrenia and 20 healthy controls. All three groups were matched on age, sex, and level of education. The two p

Cognitive impairment in patients with a schizoaffective disorder: a comparison with bipolar patients in euthymia.

OBJECTIVES: Several studies have shown persistent neurocognitive impairment in patients with a bipolar affective disorder (BD) even in euthymia as well as in patients with a schizoaffective disorder (SAD). The aim of our study was to compare the neuropsychological performance between these two groups. Confounding variables were controlled to enhance our understanding of cognitive dysfunction in both BD and SAD. METHODS: Several domains of neurocognitive function, executive function, memory, attention, concentration and perceptuomotor function were examined in 28 euthymic SAD patients and 32 B

Effectiveness of cognitive behavioural therapy administered by videoconference for posttraumatic stress disorder.

Telehealth, or health care via videoconferencing, constitutes a clinical option that makes it possible to treat patients remotely. A growing number of studies have demonstrated that telehealth is a feasible and effective method for diagnostic interviews and psychiatric consultations. However, few studies have assessed the effectiveness of psychotherapy given by videoconference. This study examines the effectiveness of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) administered by videoconference for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Forty-eight participants with PTSD were recruited for the study: 16

A cognitive behavioral case formulation framework for treatment planning in anxiety disorders.

A cognitive behavioral case formulation framework (CBCFF) for anxiety disorders is presented, in which the etiological and maintaining factors for the anxiety disorders are outlined in a single, simple, visual framework. This CBCFF is then used to demonstrate the specific links of different cognitive and behavioural treatment components to aspects of the case formulation. An example is used to illustrate the use of the CBCFF, highlighting its utility with novel presentations for which no manualized treatments exist.

Brain microbleeds and global cognitive function in adults without neurological disorder.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Increasing attention has been paid to associations between cognitive dysfunction and brain microbleeds (MBs). Because all previous studies have investigated patients with neurological disorders, we examined subjects without neurological disorder in order to clarify pathogenic relationships. METHODS: A total of 518 consecutive adults without neurological disorder who had undergone health-screening tests of the brain were studied prospectively. Gradient-echo T2*-weighted MRI using a 1.5-T system was used to detect MBs. The Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) was adminis

An open trial of a transdiagnostic cognitive-behavioral group therapy for anxiety disorder.

Transdiagnostic models of anxiety, and cognitive-behavioral treatments based on these models, have been gaining increased attention in recent years. Preliminary efficacy studies generally suggest strong treatment effects, although few of these studies have examined to what extent treatment effects are similar across clients with different anxiety disorders. The purpose of the current study was to examine the efficacy of a 12-week transdiagnostic group cognitive-behavioral therapy for anxiety disorders and compare outcome across diagnoses. Mixed-effect regression modeling of data from 52 partic

Childhood IQ and adult mental disorders: a test of the cognitive reserve hypothesis.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive reserve has been proposed as important in the etiology of neuropsychiatric disorders. However, tests of the association between premorbid IQ and adult mental disorders other than schizophrenia have been limited and inconclusive. The authors tested the hypothesis that low childhood IQ is associated with increased risk and severity of adult mental disorders. METHOD: Participants were members of a representative 1972-1973 birth cohort of 1,037 males and females in Dunedin, New Zealand, who were followed up to age 32 with 96% retention. WISC-R IQ was assessed at ages 7, 9, an

[How to differentiate schizophrenia from bipolar disorder using cognitive assessment?].

BACKGROUND: Historical aspects of the dichotomy between manic-depressive disorders and schizophrenia raise the question of a continuum between the two entities. Griesinger (1817-1868) proposed a unitary concept of psychosis: "Einheitspsychose", adaptations of which have survived until the present day. Although Kraepelin's traditional dichotomy is still a common base for clinicians every day: diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of psychotic disorders, recent epidemiological and neurobiological data are congruent with a dimensional aspect of psychosis. Epidemiological data are consistent with the

Cognitive style, alprazolam plasma levels, and treatment response in panic disorder.

This study investigated an anxiety-prone cognitive style (measured by the Anxious Thoughts and Tendencies Questionnaire, AT&T) as a predictor of the acute response to increasing alprazolam plasma levels in panic disorder. Panic disorder patients (n=26) were treated with escalating doses of alprazolam for 4 weeks, then a fixed dose of 1 mg four times a day for 4 weeks. At 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 8 weeks, trough alprazolam plasma levels; clinical, self-report, and performance measures; and vital signs were assessed. Panic attack data were from daily diaries. The repeated response measures were ana

Can pill placebo augment cognitive-behavior therapy for panic disorder?

BACKGROUND: In a number of drug and psychotherapy comparative trials, psychotherapy-placebo combination has been assumed to represent psychotherapy. Whether psychotherapy plus pill placebo is the same as psychotherapy alone is an empirical question which however has to date never been examined systematically. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials (RCTs) that directly compared cognitive-behavior therapy (CBT) alone against CBT plus pill placebo in the treatment of panic disorder. RESULTS: Extensive literature search was able to identify th
