Pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder as a developmental disorder of cognitive-emotional control: a transdiagnostic and family-integrated perspective.

Pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a complex condition that typically emerges in childhood or adolescence and is closely linked to developmental changes in cognitive and emotional control. This mini-review offers a clinically oriented synthesis of pediatric OCD from a developmental and transdiagnostic perspective, framing it as a disturbance of flexibility, inhibition, and distress regulation that organizes its clinical presentation. Variations in these control processes across development shape the content and form of obsessive-compulsive symptoms and contribute to their frequen

Electrophysiological Correlates of Cognitive Dysfunction in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD): A Systematic and Mechanistic Review of EEG, ERP, and QEEG Evidence.

Background/Objectives: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is associated not only with obsessions and compulsions, but also with cognitive dysfunction involving inhibitory control, cognitive flexibility, working memory, attention, decision-making, feedback learning, and performance monitoring. Electroencephalography (EEG), event-related potentials (ERPs), quantitative EEG, and time-frequency analyses provide temporally precise methods for examining how these cognitive abnormalities unfold during information processing. This review aimed to synthesise electrophysiological evidence on the neural…

While cognitive flexibility and susceptibility to new skills may be paramount during development, reduced cognitive flexibility and increased cognitive determinism may enable more efficient responses to stimuli during adulthood. Stressful Life Events and Racial Disparities in Cognition Among Middle-Aged and Older Adults.

BACKGROUND: It is well-documented that African Americans have elevated risk for cognitive impairment and dementia in late life, but reasons for the racial disparities remain unknown. Stress processes have been linked to premature age-related morbidity, including Alzheimer's and related dementias (ADRD), and plausibly contribute to social disparities in cognitive aging. OBJECTIVE: We examined the relationship between stressful life events and cognitive decline among African American and White participants enrolled in the Wisconsin Registry for Alzheimer's Prevention (WRAP). METHODS: Linear mi

[Current Trends in Cognitive Theories in Psychotherapy].

The cognitive revolution is seen as a significant milestone in the conceptual development of psychology and psychotherapy. The cognitive revolution refers to the idea that human thinking is not merely a by-product of behavior, but rather an independent process that influences behavior. Current models understand human cognition as a complex coordination process based on evolutionarily developed information processing systems and built on various abilities such as memory, affective-motivational evaluations, self-regulation, social cognition, and flexible attention regulation. Cognition is thus a

Options and limitations of the cognitive psychological approach to the treatment of dyslexia.

If the field of cognitive psychology is to avoid the use of introspective methods, it must focus on the objective norms or rules for correct performance of cognitive tasks and not on subjective processes. In this manner, the cognitive approach will be more logical than empirical. Cognitive psychology alone is not able to answer the question "Why is it that some people have difficulty following some of the cognitive norms or rules?" Behaviorism and connectionism can make more important contributions here. In the treatment of dyslexia, emphasis must be placed on the fact that reading is a skill

A cognitive profile of individuals who tend to worship celebrities.

Celebrity worship is a form of parasocial interaction in which individuals become obsessed with 1 or more celebrities, similar to an erotomanic type of delusional disorder. Drawing on the cognitive factors implicated in erotomania, the authors hypothesized that celebrity worshippers might be expected to exhibit verbal, visuospatial, and cognitive deficits related to flexibility and associative learning. This general hypothesis was tested in a sample of 102 participants who completed the Celebrity Attitude Scale (L. E. McCutcheon, R. Lange, & J. Houran, 2002), the Entertainment-Social, Intense-

Introduction: eating disorders (ED) such as anorexia nervosa (AN) or bulimia nervosa (BN), as well as obesity (OB), are related to emotional and neuropsychological impairments on measures of cognitive flexibility, central coherence or decision making. However, little is known about the association among emotional regulation, neuropsychological variables and affect. Objectives: to analyze whether neuropsychological and affect variables can predict emotional regulation in ED and in OB. Methods: thirty females with restricting ED (restricting AN) were assessed, 18 with purging ED (purging AN and …

Neural correlates of reversal learning in severe mood dysregulation and pediatric bipolar disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Outcome and family history data differentiate children with severe mood dysregulation (SMD), a syndrome characterized by chronic irritability, from children with "classic" episodic bipolar disorder (BD). Nevertheless, the presence of cognitive inflexibility in SMD and BD highlights the need to delineate neurophysiologic similarities and differences between the two patient groups. Functional magnetic resonance imaging was used to examine neural correlates of cognitive flexibility deficits in patients with SMD and BD versus healthy volunteers (HV). METHOD: During functional magnetic …

RGS4 polymorphisms associated with variability of cognitive performance in a family-based schizophrenia sample.

Polymorphisms of the gene encoding the regulator of G protein signaling, subtype 4 (RGS4), may be associated with schizophrenia. Among first-episode schizophrenia patients, they are also associated with dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) volume. The DLPFC is a key region that regulates heritable cognitive functions implicated in schizophrenia pathogenesis. To further understand the relationship of RGS4 variants to schizophrenia, we examined their associations with cognitive functions among schizophrenia patients and their relatives. We analyzed 31 multiplex, multigenerational Caucasian fam

The impact of sleep loss on decision making: Opening the cognitive black box.

The impact of sleep loss on decision-making is well-documented, yet current quantitative methods often obscure the cognitive mechanisms underlying these impairments. This review examines evidence from key studies on how sleep deprivation affects decision-making domains, including risk propensity, effort and delay discounting, Bayesian reasoning, and cognitive flexibility. We critique the prevalent reliance on global behavioural metrics, highlighting three key limitations: 1) sleep-driven cognitive effects may be masked despite non-significant behavioural outcomes, 2) alternative cognitive stra…

Exploring the association between perceived control, psychological flexibility, and hope among hemodialysis patients: a cross-sectional observational study.

BACKGROUND: Psychological resilience is critical for hemodialysis patients, although the associations among perceived control, psychological flexibility, and hope remain insufficiently understood. METHODS: Data were collected on 417 hemodialysis patients. This study employed a cross-sectional design and was conducted between January 2023 and May 2024 across four hospitals in China. Patients receiving maintenance hemodialysis were purposively sampled. Participants were included if they met the fo
