The objective of the present study was to characterize Erysipelothrix sp. strains from recent erysipelas outbreaks in Japan. Eighty-three (100%) strains were identified as E. rhusiopathiae, based on serotyping and spaA PCR. Fifty (60.3%), 5 (6.0%), and 28 (33.7%) strains were isolated from animals with acute, subacute and chronic outbreaks, respectively, of which 79 (95.2%), 1 (1.2%), and 3 (3.6%) belonged to serotypes 1a, 2a, and untypeable, respectively. We evaluated the engraftment and the cell cycle status of marrow cells at various times after 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) administration. 5-FU (150 mg/kg) was given to donor male BALB/c mice at 1, 2, 6, or 12 days prior to marrow harvest. From birth mice received diets containing copper at 0.5, 1, 2 or 6 mg/kg diet. At 8 wk of age they were killed and copper status and immune responsiveness were determined. We investigated the effects of B cell stimulatory factor 2/interleukin 6 (BSF-2/IL-6) on the development of murine hemopoietic progenitors using serum-containing culture and serum-free culture. In serum-containing culture, BSF-2 mainly supported multipotential blast cell colonies from spleen cells of normal and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU)-treated mice. In serum-free culture, no colony growth was seen in the presence of BSF-2. The most common myeloid malignancy seen in children with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF-1) is juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia (JMML), a myeloproliferative disease. The vast majority of these children have inherited the neurocutaneous disease from an affected mother; boys are more often affected than girls.
