Reasons for extraction of permanent teeth in Japan.

Eight hundred forty-nine Japanese dentists were asked to record the reason for every tooth extraction of permanent teeth during 1 week in each of four seasons. The reasons were assigned to six groups: dental caries, periodontal disease, eruption problems, trauma, orthodontics and other reasons. Thirty-eight to 40% of the dentists returned the forms in each season, relating to a total of 11,175 extracted teeth. Overall, caries was the most frequent reason for tooth extraction (55.4%), followed by periodontal disease (38.0%). The females lost more teeth due to caries than did the males. In the >

Validity of a brief questionnaire in screening asymptomatic subjects from subjects with tension-type headaches or temporomandibular disorders.

Clinical investigations of temporomandibular disorders require objective, repeatable methods for screening diseased subjects from non-diseased control subjects. This study evaluated whether information gathered from a short, public domain questionnaire was useful in distinguishing temporomandibular disorder subjects (n = 216) from non-temporomandibular disorder controls (n = 69) and tension-type headache subjects (n = 22). The questionnaire consisted of eight questions relating to jaw pain (i.e., location of pain, precipitating factors, and temporal pattern of pain) and five questions relating

Epidemiology of oral mucosal lesions in United States schoolchildren: 1986-87.

Oral mucosal lesion findings from a national multistage probability oral health survey of United States schoolchildren in kindergarten through grade 12 are reported. In the 1986-87 school year 39,206 children aged 5-17 yr were examined by 14 dentists trained in standardized clinical diagnostic criteria for dental caries, periodontal conditions and oral mucosal lesions. In addition all children were asked whether or not they ever had "cold sores," "fever blisters," or "canker sores", and adolescents (grades 6-12) were questioned about their history of tobacco use. About 4% of the children had o

Subjective reports of oral dryness in an older adult population.

In this study of an older adult population almost one-fifth reported oral dryness. It was the most common of 22 oral symptoms and complaints. In a logistic regression analysis of predictors of oral dryness three variables had significant independent effects: income, taking prescribed medications and experiencing a stressful life change within the previous 6 months. Subjects with oral dryness had more decayed crown surfaces than those without but there was no association with decayed root surfaces. Nor were there any significant associations between reports of oral dryness and a number of indic

Congenitally missing permanent mandibular incisors and their association with missing primary teeth in the southern Chinese (Hong Kong).

A radiographic survey of a random sample of 454 girls aged 5.9 +/- 0.5 yr and 521 boys aged 5.8 +/- 0.4 y was undertaken to establish data on the incidence of congenitally missing mandibular incisor teeth amongst the Southern Chinese and to compare these figures with those of a similar previous study of 12-yr-olds so to eliminate factors such a trauma or extractions which may have artificially inflated the 12-yr-old incidence data. The proportion of 5-yr-old girls and boys affected by hypodontia in the permanent mandibular incisor region was 0.086 and 0.046 respectively (a significant differen

Characteristics and treatment outcome of diagnostic subgroups of CMD patients: retrospective study.

The records of 193 randomly chosen patients with CMD referred 2.5 yr previously were examined retrospectively for anamnestic, clinical and radiological findings and observations related to treatment. These data were supplemented with information from questionnaires sent to all treated patients in which their opinion on the treatment outcome was asked. Within the patient group, four diagnostic subgroups were distinguished. Three subgroups consisted of patients with the diagnoses CMD with a mainly myogenous component, osteoarthrosis and internal derangement respectively, whereas the fourth subgr

Prevalence of tongue lesions in 1013 Jordanian dental outpatients.

Over a period of 10 months, 1013 consecutive dental outpatients attending the Screening Clinic in Faculty of Dentistry, Jordan University of Science and Technology, in the city of Irbid were investigated for the presence of tongue lesions. All subjects were seeking treatment for caries and periodontal diseases and none was complaining of oral mucosal disorder. The results showed that 240 subjects (23.7%) had one or more tongue lesions. Geographic tongue and fissured tongue were detected in 6.8% and 11.4% of the examined population respectively, and an association of the two conditions was obse

A new Norwegian index of orthodontic treatment need related to orthodontic concern among 11-year-olds and their parents.

A new index of orthodontic treatment need was introduced in Norway in 1990. On a morphologic and functional basis the four groups very great (A), great (B), obvious (C) and little/no (D) need were defined for social insurance refunding. The purpose of the present study was to investigate to what extent the new index corresponded with orthodontic concern among potential orthodontic patients and their parents. Of 104 randomly selected fourth grade children, 99 (48 girls, 51 boys, mean age 10.7 yr) presented themselves for clinical examination and interview. One parent was asked to accompany the

Remaining teeth, oral dryness and dental health habits in middle-aged Norwegian rheumatoid arthritis patients.

The aim of the study was to assess the effect of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) upon dental health. A questionnaire was mailed to all seropositive rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients aged 44-56 yr in the files of the two main departments of rheumatology in South Eastern Norway. Data were obtained from 125 patients, constituting 91% of the target group. The number of remaining teeth in these patients was not related to disease duration or physical dysfunction, whereas a relationship to prolonged use of medication for pain relief was indicated. Factors known to affect tooth loss in the general populat

Coefficients of relationship by isonymy among oral cancer registrations in Scottish males.

The role of inherited susceptibility to oral cancers was studied by comparing groups of cancer patients and controls in terms of the coefficient of relationship by isonymy (Ri), both within and between Regions of mainland Scotland. Surname distributions for 3658 male cancer cases were derived from the Scottish Cancer Register for the years 1959-85. Control distributions were derived from a total of 32,468 male deaths in Scotland for 1976. For cancer of the floor of mouth, there was no evidence for increased isonymy in patients compared to controls and therefore no indication that familial fact

Cross-sectional assessment of caries and periodontitis risk within the same subject.

Dental caries and chronic periodontitis may be synergistically associated, negatively associated, or completely independent. The present report examines this relationship by comparing the susceptibility to chronic periodontitis and caries within the same individual. From an 800-patient sample, a periodontitis risk score was derived by radiographic assessment of bone loss in quarters of optimum bone height and obtaining for each subject a mean score based on all measurable surfaces. Similarly the caries risk was determined radiographically from the total decayed and filled teeth (DFT), as a per

Improved sensitivity in caries clinical trials by selection on the basis of baseline caries experience.

As caries prevalence in some countries declines, and panel sizes for discriminating anti-caries clinical trials inevitably increase, the need for participant pre-selection grows to avoid escalating cost and manpower problems. Hence, retrospective analyses of data were undertaken, from a 3-yr double-blind caries clinical trial where a linear fluoride dose-response had been obtained. As a result, it was demonstrated that the eruption status of permanent second molars, in 3005 participants aged 11-12 yr at outset, when coupled with their baseline clinical DMFT values, provided a sound basis for p

Prevalence of impacted teeth and associated pathology in middle-aged and older Swedish women.

A representative sample comprising 1418 women from five age strata was examined by means of panoramic radiography. The prevalence of impacted teeth and the frequency and type of pathology associated with the impacted teeth were assessed. About 8% of the total sample had one or more impacted teeth. Among those, pathological conditions were found in 16%. Most were moderate and consisted in most cases of a slightly widened follicle or resorption of the crown. A new examination 12 yr later revealed unchanged conditions in 85% of the cases. The changes that had occurred were generally small.

Periodontal status of individuals in early stages of human immunodeficiency virus infection.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association of periodontal health and human immunodeficiency virus infection among individuals in the early stages of disease who were participating in randomized placebo-controlled clinical trials of zidovudine. Previous reports have described a rapidly progressive periodontitis and atypical gigivitis associated with late stages of infection by the human immunodeficiency virus. A health history was completed by each subject. Baseline oral examinations were completed on 97 asymptomatic patients and nine with AIDS-related complex (ARC) during their

Hepatitis B vaccination and infection control in Brazilian dental practice, 1990.

The aims of the study were to examine the knowledge of occupational hazards from blood-borne viruses, and practices related to cross-infection control in Brazil, by a survey of 947 Brazilian dental practitioners at a National Dental Congress in January 1990. Over 80% were aware that hepatitis B virus can be present in the oral cavity and constitutes an occupational hazard but their perceptions as to the hazards from other agents were at variance with the published evidence. Over 75% were aware of the existence of vaccines against hepatitis B virus but less than 60% appreciated the possible lon

Epidemiologic studies of oral mucosal conditions--methodologic issues.

The methods used in the international English-language literature of epidemiologic investigations of oral mucosal conditions were reviewed. Methods used to study leukoplakia, lichen planus, recurrent herpes labialis, recurrent aphthous ulcers, geographic tongue and candidiasis are highlighted. In addition, studies of the full range of pathologies documented in a population were reviewed. The methodologic issues raised by the epidemiologic literature as well as those to be considered for future studies of oral mucosal conditions are presented. Emphasis is placed on study population selection, d

Periodontal treatment needs assessed by the use of clinical and radiographic criteria.

The aim of the present study was to use a decision making model in order to assess the periodontal treatment needs of a random sample of employees in a large Swedish industrial corporation. The model used provided data on critical bone loss limits for different tooth types and ages, beyond which treatment must be initiated, in order to fulfill the goal of maintaining all teeth in a functional state throughout life. A sample comprising 192 subjects belonging to four age strata (31-35 yr, 41-45 yr, 51-55 yr, and 61-65 yr) was involved. From each subject, a full mouth series of intra-oral radiogr

Prevalence of malocclusion and need for orthodontic treatment in Saudi Arabia.

The prevalence of different malocclusion features was investigated in 500 14-yr-old male Saudi Arabian children, using a modification of the registration method described by Björk et al. (3). Most of the children were in dental stage DS4 (all permanent teeth anterior to the first molars erupted). Totally 62.4% of the children had one or more malocclusion features related to dentition, occlusion, or space. The treatment need was evaluated according to the guidelines used in the Norwegian Health Service. About 40% were found to need treatment with fixed appliances, and for 33% extraction of perm
