You Don't Have to Reinvent the Wheel: Applying Design Thinking to Evidence-Based Health Communication for HIV Prevention Implementation.

Novel health communications strategies are needed to disseminate information to practitioners, not only about clinical innovations, but about evidence-based resources and tools they can use to integrate these innovations into practice. BLUPrInt is an NIH-funded research study designed to accelerate national access to HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) by disseminating resources and strategies to frontline implementers. In 2025, the research team applied a psychological framework-self-determination theory-to guide a website redesign process that leveraged user-experience and user-informed desi

Management capacity for stable coronary heart disease in Shanghai community medical institutions: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Coronary heart disease (CHD) remains one of the leading causes of death worldwide. However, systematic evaluations of CHD management quality at the community level remain limited, thereby constraining improvements in primary medical capacity. This study aims to evaluate community-based CHD management using Donabedian's model to optimise resource allocation, standardise clinical pathways, and improve chronic disease management. METHODS: Guided by Donabedian's model, this study assessed the quality of CHD diagnosis and management within Shanghai's primary healthcare system across th

"Just fighting for my life to stay alive": a qualitative investigation of barriers and facilitators to community re-entry among people with opioid use disorder and incarceration histories.

BACKGROUND: During the period of community re-entry immediately following release from jail or prison, individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD) face structural barriers to successful re-entry and high risk of overdose. Few published studies investigate experiences in the immediate period (i.e., first 24 h) of re-entry among people with OUD. AIM: To understand the barriers and facilitators to treatment and reintegration of people with OUD during the initial transition from carceral settings back into the community. METHODS: From January-December 2017, we conducted 42 semi-structured qualita

Stakeholders' engagement with Ebola therapy research in resource limited settings.

BACKGROUND: The current Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak in West Africa is the largest in history. As of February 18(th) 2015, 23,258 cases of EVD have been cumulatively reported from Nigeria, Senegal, Guinea, Liberia, Mali, Sierra Leone, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States of America resulting in more than 9,000 deaths. It is therefore exigent to develop prevention and treatment therapies for EVD. DISCUSSION: Several new EVD treatments are in clinical development at this time. Based on lessons learned, four critical processes need to be implemented before clinical trials begin.

Stabilizing Dog Populations and Improving Animal and Public Health Through a Participatory Approach in Indigenous Communities.

Free-roaming dog populations are a global concern for animal and human health including transmission of infectious disease (e.g. rabies, distemper and parasites), dog bite injuries/mortalities, animal welfare and adverse effects on wildlife. In Saskatchewan (SK), Canada, veterinary care is difficult to access in the remote and sparsely inhabited northern half of the province, where the population is predominately Indigenous. Even where veterinary clinics are readily available, there are important barriers such as cost, lack of transportation, unique cultural perspectives on dog husbandry and p

Barriers to exclusive breastfeeding practice among HIV-positive mothers in Tanzania. An exploratory qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Ensuring optimal nutrition through early breastfeeding is vital for infant mental development and overall health. HIV infections complicate decisions regarding exclusive breastfeeding, jeopardizing effective infant and young child feeding, which affects nutrition and health outcomes. Recognizing the lack of evidence on barriers to infant feeding in the context of HIV in Tanzania, this study was conducted to explore individual, household, and community obstacles in the Ilala district, Dar es Salaam. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A case study design employing a qualitative approach was use

Culture, community, and cancer: understandings of breast cancer from a non-lived experience among women living in Soweto.

BACKGROUND: Individual perceptions, socio-cultural beliefs and health system factors are key determinants of people's health seeking behavior and are widely cited as the causes of delayed breast cancer diagnosis among women from structurally vulnerable settings. Asking: "how do women with a non-lived experience of cancer understand the disease and, what informs their health seeking behaviors?", we qualitatively explored, individual, sociocultural and health system elements from a conceptual model derived from the Socioecological, Health Belief and Cancer Stigma Frameworks, to understand perspe

A new native plant in the neighborhood: effects on plant-pollinator networks, pollination, and plant reproductive success.

Ecological communities are dynamic entities subjected to extinction/colonization events. Because species are connected through complex interaction networks, the arrival of a new species is likely to affect various species across the community, as observed in plant biological invasions. However, plant invasions usually represent extreme scenarios in which the community is strongly dominated by the alien species, confounding the effects of a change in species composition with a massive increase in floral resource availability. Our study addresses changes in plant community composition involving

Community and District Empowerment for Scale-up (CODES): a complex district-level management intervention to improve child survival in Uganda: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Innovative and sustainable strategies to strengthen districts and other sub-national health systems and management are urgently required to reduce child mortality. Although highly effective evidence-based and affordable child survival interventions are well-known, at the district level, lack of data, motivation, analytic and planning capacity often impedes prioritization and management weaknesses impede implementation. The Community and District Empowerment for Scale-up (CODES) project is a complex management intervention designed to test whether districts when empowered with data

Sexually transmitted infections in adolescent women.

Adolescent women possess physiologic and, frequently, behavioral characteristics that place them at an increased risk for contracting sexually transmitted infections. Diagnosis and prompt treatment of sexually transmitted infections is of paramount importance for an adolescent's future fertility and prevention of transmission to future partners. Diagnosis and treatment is often hindered by lack of symptoms, concern for screening and treatment confidentiality, and lack of knowledge about community medical resources.

A profile of learning disability nurses.

Profiling exercises provide vital data for effective and efficient deployment of resources and for monitoring the development of services. A survey, focusing solely on community nurses for people with learning disabilities in Northern Ireland, was carried out in 1992. The findings showed, among other things, a higher caseload per nurse than the UK average. While more than half the workforce had multiple qualifications there was a lack of clinical specialist training.

Co-design of resources to support researchers to develop accessible and inclusive patient information leaflets for randomised controlled trials: the UK-based MAPLE project.

BACKGROUND: Low English language literacy and diverse communication needs are widespread in the UK. Provision of lengthy and complex patient information leaflets (PILs) for clinical trials can impose a barrier to research participation. Inclusive research design incorporates providing clear and accessible written information, often in a layered approach. This project aimed to co-design resources to support researchers to create visual, inclusive, and accessible PILs for randomised controlled trials (RCTs). METHODS: Nineteen public and community involvement and engagement co-design workshops w

Redefining and estimating the early-phase reproduction ratio for epidemic outbreaks in spatially structured populations.

Assessing epidemic risk following pathogen introduction is crucial in infectious disease epidemiology. Risk is commonly encoded through reproduction ratios, which underpin operational decision-making. In spatially structured populations, both local and cross-community transmission shape epidemic trends, a feature that standard reproduction ratios fail to capture simultaneously. Here, we use multitype branching processes to define the outbreak reproduction ratio Rob, a reformulation applicable across pathogens, epidemics and transmission routes, enabling community-specific, but system-aware, ri
