Complement inhibiting surface proteins of pathogenic bacteria provide candidates for vaccines because of two reasons. The salient abnormalities of blood coagulation found in the acute phase of Argentine hemorrhagic fever (AHF) were thrombocytopenia, prolonged partial thromboplastin time activated with kaolin, low factor VIII:C activity concurrent with high levels of von Willebrand factor, and increased values of factor V. Eighteen patients with agnogenic myeloid metaplasia with myelofibrosis were studied for clinical and laboratory evidence of immunologic dysfunction. We report a case of hypocomplementemic urticarial vasculitis heralding a relapsing polychondritis in a 63-year-old woman. The patient, who had suffered in the past from polymyalgia rheumatica, suddenly experienced a generalized urticarial eruption with a dramatic decrease in C4 complement fraction and the presence of anti-C1q antibodies. Two months later, an ear chondritis occurred and the patient rapidly responded to steroids and dapsone. To our knowledge, this association has never been reported.

The frequencies of HLA-A, B, C, DR and DQ antigens were studied in 63 Japanese patients with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE). The results could not confirm the statistical association between SSPE and HLA antigens. In addition, the allele frequencies of complement components C4, C2 and BF were determined in the 20 haplotypes with 10 unrelated SSPE patients. A significant association of C4A QO with SSPE in Caucasians was not found in Japanese.
