A previously fit 48-year-old man was admitted with an acute respiratory failure due to mycoplasma pneumonia that was confirmed by raised mycoplasma titre on complement fixation test. It was also associated with disseminated intravascular coagulopathy. The patient made a full recovery but required intermittent positive pressure ventilation.

A causative agent ("D" strain) was isolated from the contents of an affected lymph node of a patient with beningn lymphoreticulosis. According to the biological and antigenic properties this agent is identified with Chlamydia but is a distinct species. The chlamydial etiology of benign lymphoreticulosis is determined also by the complement-fixation test with sera from convalescents.

Human sera collected during a suspected yellow fever outbreak in Mabudi, Benue-Plateau State of Nigeria were examined for virus content by mouse inoculation, and presence of antibody by complement fixation (CF) and neutralization (N) tests in baby mice. No virus was isolated from 116 sera examined. 40 and 41 of the 358 sera tested were positive for yellow fever and UgMP 359 CF antibodies respectively, with 12 possession CF antibodies to both viruses. In neutralization tests, 91 and 99 of the 243 sera tested were positive for yellow fever and UgMP 359 N antibodies respectively with 37 positive

Burkholderia mallei is the etiologic agent of glanders, an infectious disease of solipeds, with renewed scientific interest due to its increasing incidence in different parts of the world. More rapid, sensitive and specific assays are required by laboratories for confirmatory testing of this disease. A microsphere-based immunoassay consisting of beads coated with B. mallei recombinant proteins (BimA, GroEL, Hcp1, and TssB) has been developed for the serological diagnosis of glanders. The proteins' performance was compared with the OIE reference complement fixation test (CFT) and an indirect en

A cross-sectional investigation was made into the seroprevalence of brucellosis in camels in three arid and semi-arid camel-rearing regions of Ethiopia (Afar, Somali and Borena) between November 2000 and April 2001. When sera collected from 1442 accessible camels were screened with the Rose Bengal plate test (RBPT). 82 (5.7%) of them reacted. The results of a complement fixation test (CFT) on those sera that had given a positive reaction to the screening test then indicated a 4.2% prevalence of brucellosis in the tested camels. There was a significant difference in the prevalence of brucellosi

The purpose of the study was to determine whether antigenic differences occurred in four stabilates of Babesia bigemina derived from a single purified isolate and propagated as acute and chronic, blood-borne and tick-borne infections in Colombian cattle. Antigens were characterised by means of the complement fixation (CF), gel diffusion (GD), agar gel electrophoresis (AGE) and the indirect haemagglutination tests (IHA). Differences were detected. Acute blood and chronic blood antigens were similar, as were acute tick and chronic tick antigens, when compared by IHA and GD. Similarities were obs

The purpose of this study was to compare the results of 3 reverse passive haemagglutination techniques currently used by blood centers for the HBS antigen screening in donors' blood. A comparison was also made with 3 other techniques: Radio-immuno-assay (RIA), Counter-electrophoresis (CEP), Complement fixation (CF). The sera from 2.028 blood donors were screened by all those techniques, as well as 105 known sera, used as references (87 HBS antigen positive sera with different titers, 18 HBS antigen negative sera) and coming from 4 origins: NIH-Bethesda, Centre National de Transfusion Sanguine,

Serum IgE concentrations of patients with paragonimiasis were determined by a radioimmunosorbent test. The mean concentration was 3,462.3 IU/ml in a group of 13 cases of paragonimiasis miyazakii in which patients showed clinical symptoms and/or positive immunological diagnostic tests, and 1,026.6 IU/ml in a control group of 13 individuals who had eaten uncooked freshwater crabs, Potamon dehaani, but had been found to be free from the infection. Moreover, the IgE level of the pleural exudates obtained from four patients with paragonimiasis miyazakii on the day of bleeding or within several days
