Electrodermal signal analysis using continuous wavelet transform as a tool for quantification of sweat gland activity in diabetic kidney disease.

Sympathetic innervation of the sweat gland (SG) manifests itself electrically as electrodermal activity (EDA), which can be utilized to measure sudomotor function. Since SG exhibits similarities in structure and function with kidneys, quantification of SG activity is attempted through EDA signals. A methodology is developed with electrical stimulation, sampling frequency and signal processing algorithm. One hundred twenty volunteers participated in this study belonging to controls, diabetes, diabetic nephropathy, and diabetic neuropathy. The magnitude and time duration of stimuli is arrived by

In-House, Fast FDM Prototyping of a Custom Cutting Guide for a Lower-Risk Pediatric Femoral Osteotomy.

Three-dimensional printed custom cutting guides (CCGs) are becoming more and more investigated in medical literature, as a patient-specific approach is often desired and very much needed in today's surgical practice. Three-dimensional printing applications and computer-aided surgical simulations (CASS) allow for meticulous preoperatory planning and substantial reductions of operating time and risk of human error. However, several limitations seem to slow the large-scale adoption of 3D printed CCGs. CAD designing and 3D printing skills are inevitably needed to develop workflow and address the s

Combining feature selection and shape analysis uncovers precise rules for miRNA regulation in Huntington's disease mice.

BACKGROUND: MicroRNA (miRNA) regulation is associated with several diseases, including neurodegenerative diseases. Several approaches can be used for modeling miRNA regulation. However, their precision may be limited for analyzing multidimensional data. Here, we addressed this question by integrating shape analysis and feature selection into miRAMINT, a methodology that we used for analyzing multidimensional RNA-seq and proteomic data from a knock-in mouse model (Hdh mice) of Huntington's disease (HD), a disease caused by CAG repeat expansion in huntingtin (htt). This dataset covers 6 CAG repe

A strategy for designing of customized electromechanical actuators of blood pumps.

Congestive heart failure is a pathology of global incidence that affects millions of people worldwide. When the heart weakens and fails to pump blood at physiological rates commensurate with the requirements of tissues, two main alternatives are cardiac transplant and ventricular assist devices (VADs). This article presents the design strategy for development of a customized VAD electromagnetic actuator. Electromagnetic actuator is a brushless direct current motor customized to drive the pump impeller by permanent magnets located in rotor-stator coupling. In this case, ceramic pivot bearings s

In silico binding free energy predictability by using the linear interaction energy (LIE) method: bromobenzimidazole CK2 inhibitors as a case study.

Protein kinase CK2 is essential for cell viability, and its control regards a broad series of cellular events such as gene expression, RNA, and protein synthesis. Evidence of its involvement in tumor development and viral replication indicates CK2 as a potential target of antineoplastic and antiviral drugs. In this study the Linear Interaction Energy (LIE) Method with the Surface Generalized Born (SGB) continuum solvation model was used to study several bromobenzimidazole CK2 inhibitors. This methodology, developed by Aqvist, finds a plausible compromise between accuracy and computational spee

Geometric Transformation Algorithm for Acetabular Cup Orientation: Converting 2D Radiographic Projections to 3D Spatial Positioning.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Hip replacement is one of the most common and successful surgeries of our time. However, with increasing numbers of total hip arthroplasties, postoperative complications due to inadequate cup positioning are rising. Accurate measurement of acetabular cup inclination and anteversion is critical for optimal outcomes. While various measurement systems exist, they often require additional hardware, specialized training, or lack integration across the care continuum. This study aims to develop and validate software for automated measurement of acetabular cup positioning, comparing i

Considerations for Using Multiple Imputation in Propensity Score-Weighted Analysis - A Tutorial with Applied Example.

PURPOSE: Propensity score-weighting for confounder control and multiple imputation to counter missing data are both widely used methods in epidemiological research. Combination of the two is not trivial and requires a number of decisions to produce valid inference. In this tutorial, we outline the assumptions underlying each of the methods, present our considerations in combining the two, discuss the methodological and practical implications of our choices and briefly point to alternatives. Throughout we apply the theory to a research project about post-traumatic stress disorder in Syrian refu

An Explicit Analytical Theory for Ignition Delay Time Prediction of Ammonia/Hydrogen Binary Carbon-Neutral Fuel.

Ammonia/hydrogen mixture fuel is recognized as a promising carbon-neutral fuel, and as such, accurate prediction of its ignition properties is essential. In this study, we present an explicitly analytical theory of the ignition delay times (IDTs) for an ammonia/hydrogen binary fuel. Different from the fitted formulas of IDTs, the current theory adopts the eigenvalue analysis of the Jacobian matrix with a detailed ammonia-hydrogen kinetic model, which retains the essential species and elementary reactions. Comparison with experimental data and computational results from detailed kinetics shows
