Determinants of condom use among sexually active youth in SBC intervention communities in Tanzania: A cross-sectional study.

HIV and unplanned pregnancies are significant public health concerns for youth in Sub-Saharan Africa. Consistent condom use is an effective behavioral method in preventing both health outcomes; however, it remains low and is declining among this population. Evidence indicates that preventive health behaviors are influenced by a range of specific factors relevant to their contexts. This study aimed to assess factors associated with condom use among sexually active youth in communities where social and behavior change (SBC) interventions were implemented in Tanzania. A cross-sectional study was

Modelling of doxycycline-based prevention of bacterial sexually transmitted infections in comparison to condom-based and test-based prevention.

BACKGROUND: Doxycycline-based prevention of bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs) has been assessed in various studies and has been recommended by the European AIDS Clinical Society to be proposed to persons with repeated STIs on a case-by-case basis. However, while good preventive effects could be shown for Chlamydia trachomatis and Treponema pallidum in Europe, no reliable prevention against doxycycline resistance-affected bacterial causes of STIs like Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Mycoplasma genitalium was confirmed. METHODS: In a modelling-approach, we assessed potential beneficial

Factors associated with condom use in vaginal intercourse among Spanish adults with intellectual disability: Proposal for an explanatory model.

BACKGROUND: The prevention of HIV or other STIs in people with intellectual disabilities (ID) is a rarely studied subject even though this population group is at the same risk of infection as the general population. AIMS: The present study aims to conduct a descriptive analysis of sexual behaviours and condom use frequency in Spanish men and women with intellectual disabilities and identify the combination of variables that best explain condom use in vaginal intercourse. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: The sample consisted of 253 people (56.1 % male and 43.9 % female) aged between 20 and 64 years (M

Low use of condom and high STI incidence among men who have sex with men in PrEP programs.

OBJECTIVE: Since the recent introduction of preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP), several studies have reported a decrease in the use of condoms and a rise in STIs among users. This rise in risk behavior associated with the advent of PrEP is known as "risk compensation." The aim of this study is to measure clinical and behavioral changes associated with the introduction of PrEP by analyzing condom use for anal intercourse, number of sexual partners, sexualized drug use and STI incidence. METHODS: We performed a retrospective descriptive study of PrEP users followed every 3months over a 2-year perio…

Condom Use for Sexually Transmitted Infection Prevention Among Hispanic Teenage Mothers: A Community-Based Randomized Trial.

Background: Hispanics experience a higher prevalence of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) than non-Hispanics. Specifically, Hispanic teenagers are more at risk for HIV, have close to four times the rate of primary and secondary syphilis, and close to two times the rate of chlamydia and gonorrhea compared with non-Hispanic white teenagers. Hispanic youth engage in sexual activity at a younger age than non-Hispanic white youth and are less likely to use condoms in these encounters, thereby contributing to increased rates of teenage pregnancy and STIs. Prevention of STIs is needed for unmarr…

High condom use but low HIV testing uptake reported by men who purchase sex in Bali, Indonesia.

Men who purchase sex (MWPS) have long been considered as one of the population groups at risk of HIV transmission. However, while HIV-related interventions have been targeted towards this group, few studies have directly recruited MWPS to measure the impact of such interventions. This study aimed to fill the gap for Indonesia by identifying the level and predictors of condom use and HIV testing among MWPS, to inform prevention strategies. A cross-sectional study was conducted by surveying 200 MWPS in Bali, Indonesia in 2015. A structured questionnaire was administered to collect the data. Self

HIV Risk Behaviors and Correlates of Inconsistent Condom Use Among Substance Using Migrants at the Mexico/Guatemala Border.

This study assessed correlates of inconsistent condom use with casual partners and the prevalence of sexual risk behaviors and STIs in the M … her in women with greater education and lower among women who sold sex. In men, less access to free condoms, drug use with sexual partners, and drug use before sex were independently associated with inconsistent condom use with casual partners. Sexual and substance use risk behaviors were common, and HIV/STI prevention efforts should target both genders a …

Structural and community-level interventions for increasing condom use to prevent the transmission of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.

BACKGROUND: Community interventions to promote condom use are considered to be a valuable tool to reduce the transmission of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). In particular, special emphasis has been placed on implementing such interventions through structural changes, a concept that implies public health actions that aim to improve society's health through modifications in the context wherein health-related risk behavior takes place. This strategy attempts to increase condom use and in turn lower the transmission of HIV and other STIs. OBJEC

Associations of a sexually transmitted disease diagnosis during a relationship with condom use and psychosocial outcomes: (short) windows of opportunity.

Few studies have examined whether and how receiving an sexually transmitted disease (STD) diagnosis while in a romantic relationship relates to condom use and psychosocial sexual outcomes. Using dyadic data, we examined associations of a personal or a partner's STD diagnosis during a relationship with condom use, monogamy intentions, condom intentions and attitudes, and STD susceptibility and communication. Because beliefs about how the STD was acquired may shape associations with behavior and cognitions, gender and suspecting that one's partner had other sexual partners (i.e., partner concurr

Condom negotiation across different relationship types by young women engaged in sex work in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

Cambodia's 100% Condom Use Programme is credited with an increase in consistent condom use in commercial sexual interactions and a decrease in HIV prevalence among female sex workers (FSWs). There has been little improvement in condom use between FSWs and non-commercial partners, prompting calls for more innovative approaches to increasing condom use in these relationships. To understand why condoms are used or not used in sexual interactions involving FSWs, we examined condom negotiation across different types of relationships. We conducted 33 in-depth interviews with young (15 to 29 years) w…

Trends in condom use among female sex workers in Andhra Pradesh, India: the impact of a community mobilisation intervention.

BACKGROUND: Community mobilisation interventions for HIV prevention among female sex workers (FSWs) aim to organise FSWs for collective action and challenge the structures of power that underlie HIV risk. Assessing intervention impact is challenging because the importance of direct individual exposure to intervention components may decrease over time as change occurs at social-normative, policy and other structural levels. In this paper, the authors examine changes over time in consistent condom use among FSWs in Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh, the location of a long-standing community mobilisati

Condom use during last sexual contact and last 30 days in two samples of Caribbean military personnel.

Condom use during last sexual contact is a survey measure that may be used to inform monitoring and evaluation indicators of recent condom use in populations at risk for HIV infection and other sexually transmitted infections, such as the uniformed services. The authors tested for differences in condom use measures that were fielded within separate Biological and Behavioral Surveillance Surveys conducted in the armed forces of two separate nations: the Dominican Republic and Belize. Both surveys included measures of condom use during last sexual contact with specified partners and both surveys
