Cost-effectiveness and value of information analyses of Bruton's tyrosine kinase inhibitors in the treatment of relapsed or refractory mantle cell lymphoma in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Ibrutinib, acalabrutinib, and zanubrutinib have shown improvements in efficacy and safety over conventional chemoimmunotherapy in refractory or relapsed mantle cell lymphoma (R/R MCL). OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the comparative cost-effectiveness of the Bruton's tyrosine kinase inhibitors (BTKIs) and estimate the expected value of (partial) perfect information (EV[P]PI) in terms of net health benefits (NHBs) and net monetary benefits (NMBs) forgone. METHODS: Using a two-state Markov model (progression-free; progression or death), we estimated in base-case and probabilistic sensitivity

Global assessment of the knowledge and confidence in managing allergic disorders among primary care pediatricians across Europe: An EAACI task force report.

BACKGROUND: Pediatricians are often the first point of contact for children in Primary Care (PC), but still perceive gaps in their allergy knowledge. We investigated self-perceived knowledge gaps and educational needs in pediatricians across healthcare systems in Europe so that future educational initiatives may better support the delivery of allergy services in PC. METHOD: A multinational survey was circulated to pediatricians who care for children and adolescents with allergy problems in PC by the EAACI Allergy Educational Needs in Primary Care Pediatricians Task Force from February to Marc

Anxiety and depression among women with COVID-19 infection during childbirth-experience from a tertiary care academic center.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy and postpartum are vulnerable periods for mental health problems and distress. Studies conducted worldwide have highlighted the role of the COVID-19 pandemic in adding to the rates of depression and anxiety in the perinatal period. However, there are very few reports on mothers who were identified as having COVID-19 infection at the time of childbirth. OBJECTIVE: Our study aimed to find the prevalence of depression and anxiety among pregnant women who were admitted for labor and tested positive for COVID-19 infection. We also aimed to study the association of various soc

[Clozapine and pregnancy].

UNLABELLED: This article reviews the relations between clozapine and pregnancy. Six case reports are identified in the literature of pregnant patients who received clozapine. Novartis at Basle, Switzerland, through its pharmacovigilance and epidemiology, service, has data on nearly 200 cases summarized in this article. We also describe the case of a patient with paranoid schizophrenia who was hospitalized 10 times between the age of 22 to 32. She received clozapine when she was 29 years old and, with a daily dosage of 350 mg, she became asymptomatic. At the age of 33 and 37, she became pregnan

Role of strain values using automated function imaging on transthoracic echocardiography for the assessment of acute chest pain in emergency department.

Left ventricular strain echocardiography is reported to be more sensitive in detecting myocardial ischemia than conventional transthoracic echocardiography (TTE). We evaluated the usefulness of 2D strain analysis for the assessment of acute chest pain in emergency department (ED). Patients presenting to ED with acute chest pain were recruited. Patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction, known coronary artery disease (CAD), non-ischemic cardiomyopathy, or non-cardiac chest pain were excluded. The pretest probability of CAD and TTEs were evaluated in all patients. TTEs included visual asse

Cancer mortality among French nuclear contract workers.

BACKGROUND: Nuclear workers from French contracting companies have received higher doses than workers from Electricité de France (EDF) or Commissariat à l'Energie Atomique (CEA). METHODS: A cohort study of 9,815 workers in 11 contracting companies, monitored for exposure to ionizing radiation between 1967 and 2000 were followed up for a median duration of 12.5 years. Standardized mortality ratios (SMRs) were computed. RESULTS: Between 1968 and 2002, 250 deaths occurred. Our study demonstrated a clear healthy worker effect (HWE) with mortality attaining half that expected from national mortal

Feasibility and assessment of a comprehensive emergency department-based intervention for patients at risk of HIV.

Behavioral factors increase the risk of contracting HIV. A comprehensive prevention services (CPS) intervention includes risk assessment and referral for those with confirmed risk. This project sought to assess the feasibility of an emergency department (ED)-based CPS program. A prospective cross-sectional assessment was conducted from October, 2021 through May, 2023, at a single ED in Birmingham, Alabama. Either of two screening methods were subjected to HIV negative adults: 1) manual chief complaint review or 2) objective electronic medical record (EMR) query. Manual and EMR screening method

Understanding mother-to-child transmission of HIV among mothers engaged in HIV care in Kenya: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Mother-to-child transmission of HIV, which may occur in utero, during birth, or through breastmilk, is now largely preventable with the advancement of HIV testing and treatment for women and their infants. Globally, great progress has been recorded over the years, with a 58% decline in new infections in children from 2010 to 2022. Currently, Kenya is among the countries with the highest rates of mother-to-child transmission of HIV despite consistent efforts to promote prevention of mother to child transmission strategies. METHODS: This case report presents the experiences of a wom

The feasibility and impact of deploying a four-tests panel at antenatal care in primary health care facilities of a developing country, Kenya.

INTRODUCTION: Contracting HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B virus (HBV), and malaria during pregnancy significantly affects the health of the woman, the pregnancy, and the unborn child. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends testing pregnant women for these infections to achieve triple elimination of mother-to-child transmissions. However, this goal has not been fully realized in low- to medium-income countries, primarily due to segmented testing practices. This study aimed to investigate the effect of introducing a four-tests panel on the quality of antenatal care (ANC) among pregnant women

The prevalence and risk factors for tuberculosis among healthcare workers in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

Healthcare workers (HCWs) are at risk of contracting TB, particularly when in high tuberculosis (TB) burden settings. Routine surveillance data and evidence are limited on the burden of TB amongst HCWs in Indonesia. We aimed to measure the prevalence of TB infection (TBI) and disease among HCWs in four healthcare facilities in Yogyakarta province in Indonesia, and explore risk factors for TBI. A cross-sectional TB screening study targeted all HCWs from four pre-selected facilities (1 hospital, 3 primary care) in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Voluntary screening included symptom assessment, Chest X-ra

Behavioral compliance with preventive health measures for students with and without hearing disability during COVID-19 pandemic: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Hearing loss affects over 1.5 billion individuals worldwide. Their disability and limited access to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic information make them suffer a greater degree than ordinary people. However, the quantitative studies on the implementation of behavior compliance with preventive health measures for vulnerable groups such as people with hearing disability were limited. The purpose of this study was to explore the compliance with pandemic-related protective health measures among people with hearing disability. DESIGN: A cross-sectional survey, population-based coh

Perspectives of urban Ghanaian women on vasectomy.

BACKGROUND: Advocacy for male involvement in family planning has been championed over the years after the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD). There are a few contraceptive methods for men, and vasectomy uptake has been identified as one of the indicators of male involvement in family planning. Vasectomy also known as male sterilization is a permanent form of contraception. It is a generally safe, quick, easy, effective surgical operation with rare complications to prevent release of sperm. The study explored the vasectomy perspectives of urban Ghanaian women. M

COMMUNITY PERCEPTIONS OF SCHISTOSOMIASIS TRANSMISSION, PREVALENCE AND CONTROL IN RELATION TO AQUATIC HABITATS IN THE LAKE VICTORIA BASIN OF KENYA.

BACKGROUND: Intestinal schistosomiasis caused by Schistosoma mansoni and urinary schistosomiasis caused by Schistosoma haematobium are widely distributed parasites in several localities of the Lake Victoria basin of Kenya, the former being more prevalent. In Kenya, transmission of the intestinal form of bilharzia (S. mansoni) tends to be closely confined to narrow zones along the shores of large bodies of water such as Lake Victoria where it is endemic and the intermediate host is found. The prevalence of S. mansoni along the Kenyan Lake Victoria basin ranges between 40% and 80%. OBJECTIVE: T

Parents' perspectives on the MMR immunisation: a focus group study.

BACKGROUND: The uptake of the combined measles, mumps and rubella immunisation (MMR) in Britain has fallen since 1998, when a link was hypothesised with the development of bowel disorders and childhood autism. Despite reassurances about the safety of MMR, uptake levels remain lower than optimal. We need to understand what influences parents' decisions on whether to accept MMR or not so that health professionals can provide a service responsive to their needs. AIM: To investigate what influences parents' decisions on whether to accept or refuse the primary MMR immunisation and the impact of th

Case Report: Iatrogenic left main coronary artery dissection during premature ventricular contraction ablation managed with emergent coronary artery bypass grafting.

Premature ventricular contraction (PVC) ablation via retrograde aortic access is generally safe, but iatrogenic left main coronary artery (LMCA) dissection is a rare and potentially catastrophic complication. This case adds to the literature by describing LMCA dissection during PVC ablation managed with primary emergent coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) rather than percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), guided by intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) and Heart Team decision-making. A 60-year-old man with symptomatic, medication-refractory monomorphic PVCs (17.4% burden with nonsustained vent
