Almitrine bismesylate: a long-term placebo-controlled double-blind study in COAD--Vectarion International Multicentre Study Group.

701 patients, age 61.9 +/- 8.3 yr (mean +/- SD), with hypoxaemic chronic obstructive airways disease (COAD) were entered into a one yr placebo-controlled double-blind study to determine the effect of oral almitrine bismesylate on arterial blood gas tensions and clinical condition. Initial arterial O2 tension (PaO2) was 7.6 +/- 0.8 kPa (57.0 +/- 6.2 mmHg) and arterial CO2 tension (PaCO2) was 6.0 +/- 0.9 kPa (45.2 +/- 6.7 mmHg). Forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) was 0.87 +/- 0.35 l and forced vital capacity (FVC) was 2.31 +/- 0.72 l. 163 patients, evenly distributed between treated a

Long-term outcome of major psychoses. II. Schizoaffective disorder compared with schizophrenia, affective disorders, and a surgical control group.

Eighty-five patients with both schizophrenic and affective features at the time of admission to the University of Iowa Psychiatric Hospital between 1934 and 1944 were selected for a 30- to 40-year outcome study. Comparison groups were 200 schizophrenic and 325 affective disorder patients, selected by the Feighner et at criteria, and 160 psychiatric symptom-free surgical patients. We assessed marital, residential, occupational, and psychiatric status to evaluate the outcome of these patients at the time of field follow-up. We used multivariate analysis of covariance to analyze the data by takin

Reducing opioid use for chronic pain with a group-based intervention: Economic evaluation using randomised controlled trial data.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Long-term strong opioid use for chronic non-malignant pain (CNMP) represents a significant public health challenge, associated with reduced health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and increased mortality. The Improving the Wellbeing of people with Opioid Treated CHronic pain (I-WOTCH) trial demonstrated that a multicomponent intervention supporting opioid withdrawal in people with CNMP successfully reduced opioid consumption compared with best usual care (BUC), without adversely affecting perceived pain levels. This study aimed to assess the value-for-money of the strategie

Effectiveness of group-based art interventions for late-life depression: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: Depression is the most common mental health disorder among the older populations, leading to a higher reduction in quality of life and an increased financial burden on the health care system. One promising non-pharmacological approach for improving mental health in older adults is the use of art-based interventions. METHODS: This systematic review and meta-analysis followed PRISMA guidelines. Eligible randomized controlled trials (RCTs) examined any form of art intervention (including music, dance, and visual arts) targeting depression in adults aged > 55 years. Databases searched

High-frequency vs. low-frequency MIDI-assisted group music therapy in psychiatric inpatients: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Music therapy has been increasingly incorporated into psychiatric inpatient care as an adjunctive intervention; however, evidence regarding its comparative effectiveness, particularly with respect to intervention intensity during brief psychiatric hospitalizations, remains limited. Most randomized trials have evaluated interventions delivered over several weeks, leaving uncertainty about the potential differential effects of higher versus lower intervention intensity within short inpatient stays. METHODS: This randomized controlled trial with a parallel-group design was conducted

Efficacy of a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy-Based Online Self-Help Group for Depression and Suicide Ideation: Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Despite the high prevalence of depressive disorders, access to effective treatment remains limited due to financial, geographic, and social barriers. Online self-help groups offer a promising and scalable form of peer-based support beyond traditional clinical settings. Integrating cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) techniques such as cognitive restructuring and behavioral activation into self-help groups may enhance their effectiveness. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the efficacy of a cognitive behavioral therapy-based online self-help group (COS) that integrates structured CBT t

Effectiveness of a Home-Based and Group-Based Tele-Exercise Program for Breast Cancer Survivors: Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer remains the most prevalent cancer among women globally. Adjuvant therapies can cause adverse effects that compromise physical and mental health. Exercise may mitigate these effects; however, many breast cancer survivors remain insufficiently active. OBJECTIVE: This pilot study aimed to test the effectiveness of a 7-week theory-informed tele-exercise intervention for breast cancer survivors in Hong Kong. METHODS: We developed a 12-week theory-informed tele-exercise intervention for breast cancer survivors in Hong Kong; this pilot tested a 7-week abbreviated version.

Dronabinol for chronic low back pain in Veterans: protocol for a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group trial.

Chronic low back pain is common, disabling, and often inadequately controlled with current pharmacologic options, underscoring the need for safer non-opioid treatments. Dronabinol, a synthetic formulation of Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol, has analgesic potential but has not been rigorously evaluated for chronic low back pain. This article describes a phase IIa, single-site, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group trial in Veterans with chronic low back pain. Seventy-five participants will be randomized 2:1 to oral dronabinol or matching placebo for 8 weeks following a screening

Cannabidiol versus placebo in patients with fibromyalgia: a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group, single-centre trial.

OBJECTIVES: Cannabidiol (CBD) is used to alleviate fibromyalgia pain despite limited evidence for efficacy. This study assessed the efficacy and safety of CBD vs placebo in patients with fibromyalgia, hypothesising that CBD would be superior to placebo in reducing pain. METHODS: In this single-centre, double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled trial, patients diagnosed with fibromyalgia were recruited from a specialised outpatient clinic in Denmark. Eligible participants were randomised 1:1 and stratified by sex, defined as biological sex assigned at birth based on physical anatomy. Age (<4

Simultaneous Versus Staged Bilateral Hip Arthroscopy for Femoroacetabular Impingement: Minimum 2-Year Outcomes With a Unilateral Control Group.

BACKGROUND: One-fifth of patients with femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) have bilateral symptoms. Performing bilateral hip arthroscopy on the same day minimizes the overall rehabilitation period compared with staged bilateral surgery, but most studies of outcomes from simultaneous surgery are in small cohorts. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose was to compare clinical outcome and revision rates between patients undergoing simultaneous bilateral, staged bilateral, and unilateral arthroscopic surgery for FAI from a large single-surgeon cohort. It was hypothesized that there would be no between-gr

Effect of Eccentric Control Exercises on Patients with Frozen Shoulder and Mild to Moderate Disability: A Single-Group Pre-Post Study.

BACKGROUND: Frozen shoulder (FS) is a common musculoskeletal condition characterized by inflammatory contracture of the glenohumeral joint capsule, leading to restricted active and passive range of motion, particularly in external rotation. Eccentric control exercises have demonstrated effectiveness in managing various upper limb disorders, including subacromial impingement, tennis elbow, and rotator cuff tendinopathy. However, there is limited evidence on their efficacy in individuals with frozen shoulder. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of eccentric control exercises on pain, functi

Association of HLA-DQ4/5 genotype polymorphisms with celiac disease in a group of children in Southwest Iran: A case-control study.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Celiac disease (CD) has proinflammatory and pathogenic immune responses to gluten in intestinal tissue, leading to structural changes in the mucosa of the small intestine. The association of human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-DQ2 and DQ8 genotypes with CD has been previously reported. This test has a negative predictive value close to 100%, so its main purpose is to rule out the detection of CD completely or almost completely. There is limited information regarding HLA-DQ4/5 in CD. This study was conducted to determine the HLA-DQ4/5 genotypes in a group of Southwestern Iranian c

Risk Phenotypes, Comorbidities, Pharmacotherapy, and Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) in a Cohort with Difficult-to-Treat Depression in Comparison to an Unmedicated Control Group.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 15-25% of depressed patients suffer from difficult-to-treat depression (DTD). Patients with DTD require a thorough examination to avoid the oversight of treatable (psychiatric/somatic) comorbidities or (pseudo-)resistance to antidepressant drugs (ADs). Polymorphisms of the cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes 2D6 and 2C19, which play a major role in the metabolism of ADs, may contribute to resistance to ADs. Patients with DTD might benefit from electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). METHODS: We enrolled 109 patients with DTD and 29 untreated depressed controls (UDC). We assessed

Decreased levels of vitamin D in Post-Corona Virus-19 Disease syndrome (PCS) patients compared to a control group.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Vitamin D deficiency is defined by most experts as a level of less than 20 ng/ml. Studies have shown a relationship between musculoskeletal pain, muscle weakness, headache, and fatigue with low vitamin D level. The term Post-Corona Virus-19 Disease syndrome (PCS) describes new, returning or ongoing symptoms more than 12 weeks after Corona Virus Disease -19 (COVID-19) infection which cannot be explained by any other disorders or illnesses. The most prominent symptoms in PCS are fatigue, headache, and attention disorders. These similarities in PCS and vitamin D deficiency lead

Effect of antipsychotic drugs on group II metabotropic glutamate receptor expression and epigenetic control in postmortem brains of schizophrenia subjects.

Antipsychotic-induced low availability of group II metabotropic glutamate receptors (including mGlu2R and mGlu3R) in brains of schizophrenia patients may explain the limited efficacy of mGlu2/3R ligands in clinical trials. Studies evaluating mGlu2/3R levels in well-designed, large postmortem brain cohorts are needed to address this issue. Postmortem samples from the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex of 96 schizophrenia subjects and matched controls were collected. Toxicological analyses identified cases who were (AP+) or were not (AP-) receiving antipsychotic treatment near the time of death. Pro
