Blackgram, a protein-rich pulse crop (24%), is crucial for combating food insecurity, particularly in malnourished and economically weak countries. Enhancing blackgram production requires improved, input-saving management practices. Given the challenges of climate change and population growth, efficient water management is vital for increasing pulse productivity and water use efficiency with minimal investment. This study aimed to identify cost-effective irrigation methods to optimise blackgram yields. Experiments were conducted at the National Pulses Research Centre in Vamban, Pudukkottai, an

Apples (Malus domestica) and plums (Prunus domestica) are important fruit crops belonging to the Rosaceae family. The edible parts of fruits and seeds contain phytochemicals; however, the seeds are rich in cyanogenic glycosides (CNGs), which release toxic hydrogen cyanide (HCN) upon the loss of plant cell integrity. This review aims to explore the quantitative and qualitative CNG profiles in apples and plums, focusing on their distribution in different parts of the fruit, changes during fruit development, and environmental impacts on their biosynthesis. It also discusses the intricate dynamics

The plant growth regulator zaxinone is essential for proper rice growth and development. Additionally, zaxinone and its two synthetic mimics, MiZax3 and MiZax5, have been shown to significantly promote crop growth and reduce infestation by the root parasitic plant Striga by suppressing strigolactone (SL) production, highlighting their potential for field application. Here, we developed 4 new MiZax through structural modifications of the methoxybenzene ring in MiZax3 and evaluated their effects on plant growth and SL exudation. These newly developed mimics enhanced rice growth and reduced SL re

BACKGROUND: With increasing food demand as a consequence of the growing world population, there is a corresponding demand for additional sources of phosphorus (P). Alum-phosphate (Al-P) sludge is a by-product of wastewater treatment and can be a good source of P. In this study, the response of maize (Zea mays L.) to Al-P sludge was tested. Maize was chosen as the test crop due to its prevalent use as human and animal food and as a source of biofuel. The objective of the study was to investigate Al-P sludge as a source of P compared to a commercial fertilizer (monoammonium phosphate, MAP).

Mixed silage of whole catch crops-crops grown between 2 main crops-and straw might be an alternative forage source for dairy cattle in times of forage shortage but is still understudied. This research sought to evaluate the effects of feeding mixed rye-vetch-straw silage (RVSS) in replacement of whole crop rye silage on feed intake, ECM yield, milk composition, nutrient digestibility, and metabolic variables of dairy cows. The study was a crossover trial with 10 Holstein and 4 Simmental cows (average of 593 kg BW and 53 DIM at the start of the trial) tested in 2 experimental runs of 4 wk each,

Aspergillosis is a fungal disease caused by the inhalation of Aspergillus spores, with Aspergillus fumigatus being the primary causative agent. This thermotolerant fungus affects both immunocompetent and immunocompromised individuals, posing a significant public health concern. In recent years, the detection of A. fumigatus in food products and production environments has raised questions about its potential role as an additional route of exposure. Furthermore, the emergence of azole-resistant strains in agricultural settings highlights the need to better understand its transmission dynamics a

Wheat is the dominant crop in temperate countries being used for human food and livestock feed. Its success depends partly on its adaptability and high yield potential but also on the gluten protein fraction which confers the viscoelastic properties that allow dough to be processed into bread, pasta, noodles, and other food products. Wheat also contributes essential amino acids, minerals, and vitamins, and beneficial phytochemicals and dietary fibre components to the human diet, and these are particularly enriched in whole-grain products. However, wheat products are also known or suggested to

BACKGROUND: Vertical farming offers a promising solution to food production challenges in urban and climate-constrained regions, yet its high energy demand raises concerns about sustainability. Most existing studies assess energy demand and CO 2 emissions under static operational assumptions and lack a comprehensive framework linking seasonal renewable availability, crop cycle timing, and operational flexibility to system resilience and grid dependency.
METHODS: This study evaluates the performance and carbon footprint of a fully enclosed pilot vertical farming unit in Northern Greece using T

According to a previous study, we had found that early weaning causes harm to growth performance, intestinal morphology, activity of digestive enzymes, and antioxidant status in pigeon squabs (Columba livia). Chitosan oligosaccharides (COS) and Clostridium butyricum have been reported to have great potential to improve the growth performance and intestinal health of early-weaned animals. Therefore, the aim of this study is to explore whether dietary supplementation with COS-C. butyricum synbiotic could relieve early-weaned stress by evaluating its effects on growth performance and intestinal h

Glyphosate is a synthetic phosphonate compound characterized by a carbon‑phosphorus bond. Glyphosate based herbicides (GBH) are widely distributed in most of the economically productive lands in which crop production is mainly based on glyphosate-resistant genetically modified plants. Naturally, glyphosate is remediated by soil microorganisms, which accelerate its degradation. Technology based on microorganisms is considered highly efficient, low-cost and eco-friendly to remediate contaminated environments, denoting the importance of characterizing new bacterial strains able to degrade glyphos…

Genetic modification of foods is one of the many ways of processing that can enhance foods to increase desirable qualities, such as herbicide tolerance, bacteria and insect resistance, improved nutritional value, and delayed ripening. However, a theoretical potential to increase the allergenicity of food proteins has been the subject of concern from critics. To prevent adverse effects from genetically modified (GM) crops, national and international organizations tightly regulate their production and recommend rigorous safety testing. Some safety tests were developed to assess potential allerge

BACKGROUND: Understanding the complex interactions between plants, Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi (AMF), and elevated atmospheric CO2 (eCO2) is crucial for enhancing agricultural sustainability and productivity, particularly in the face of future climate change. While elevated CO2 concentrations can influence AMF colonization development, AMF are known to benefit plants by improving nutrient uptake, especially phosphorus, enhancing drought tolerance, and increasing resistance to certain soil-borne pathogens. These beneficial effects of AMF can potentially mitigate some of the negative impacts of

Management of Xylella fastidiosa subsp. pauca (Xfp) presents significant challenges because of the lack of genetic resistance in major crops, pathogen variability and resistance development against the main antimicrobial compounds, and the lack of effective chemical compounds for control. Traditional bactericides in the EU are restricted, and copper-based products are increasingly limited because of environmental impacts. In this study, the antibacterial side effects of some commercial fertilizers against Xfp were evaluated. These products, containing metal ions (mainly copper and/or zinc) com

Sulfur is an essential element in determining the productivity and quality of agricultural products. It is also an element associated with tolerance to biotic and abiotic stress in plants. In agricultural practice, sulfur has broad use in the form of sulfate fertilizers and, to a lesser extent, as sulfite biostimulants. When used in the form of bulk elemental sulfur, or micro- or nano-sulfur, applied both to the soil and to the canopy, the element undergoes a series of changes in its oxidation state, produced by various intermediaries that apparently act as biostimulants and promoters of stres

Maize (Zea mays L.) is a major staple crop worldwide and plays a critical role in food security. Although humic acid (HA) is widely used to improve crop productivity, its effectiveness is often limited by poor dispersibility and bioavailability. Herein, nanohumic acid (NHA) with improved dispersibility was synthesized, and its effects on maize yield and underlying mechanisms were evaluated. The results showed that NHA significantly promoted maize growth and increased yield, with the highest yield under NHA15 (15 mg/kg; 31.8 g/plant), exceeding HA15 (12.8 g/plant) and CK (6.8 g/plant). Whiteflies (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) are among the most destructive pests of vegetables and ornamental crops, causing severe yield losses through phloem feeding and virus transmission. Although historically most research has centered on Bemisia tabaci, the greenhouse whitefly Trialeurodes vaporariorum is rapidly emerging as a major pest across sub-Saharan Africa. Its spread in both open-field and protected cropping systems is linked to shifts in land use, climate variability, and intensified production systems. Furthermore, growing insecticide resistance to commonly used insecticides threatens

The plant microbiome plays a pivotal role in plant survival in natural habitats by facilitating nutrient acquisition, stress adaptation, and disease suppression, while also offering opportunities to enhance crop productivity and climate resilience. However, the distribution of persistent and culturable bacteriome across maize-associated niches and their functional potential remain poorly resolved. This study integrated metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS-based metabarcoding) and culturomics to characterise the maize-associated bacteriome of bulk soil, rhizoplane, phylloplane, and cob
