The hematoma cavity typically remains collapsed after intracranial hematoma evacuation, but here we report an adult case in which the cavity expanded into a cystic form, developing into a porencephalic cyst, after the removal. A 73-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital presenting with a disturbance of consciousness. A CT scan showed a subcortical hemorrhage with a blend sign and brain herniation, prompting emergent hematoma evacuation. Although there was an improvement in her symptoms after the operation, her consciousness deteriorated on the 14th day post-operation. A CT scan revealed a

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Seminal vesical cyst (SVC) together with ipsilateral renal agenesis known as Zinner's syndrome is a rare congenital malformation mostly asymptomatic and is detected in second to fourth decade of life presenting with symptoms of bowel and bladder neck irritation/obstruction. Diagnosis is based mainly on various imaging techniques with MRI being the confirmatory. Recent management includes laparoscopic excision of the SVC but conventional aspiration of the cystic fluid together with explorative open excision of the cyst is still regarded useful.

Most pineal cysts are not surgical lesions and should be conservatively managed. Select lesions, notably those that present with hydrocephalus and Parinaud syndrome and lesions presenting with symptoms consistent with intermittent blockage of cerebrospinal fluid pathways and/or neurovascular compression, however, can be considered for surgical intervention. Two workhorse surgical approaches to the pineal region include the occipital interhemispheric transtentorial and supracerebellar infratentorial approaches. Each approach provides unique benefits and drawbacks and is associated with morbidit

Respiratory epithelial cysts are rare orbital cysts that can arise secondary to choristomatous rests of respiratory epithelium. Approximately 15 congenital cases have been described in the literature, making it a rare disease entity. We present a case of a 14-month-old Middle Eastern male with a right infraorbital respiratory epithelial cyst. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain and orbits revealed a right infraorbital cyst hyperintense on T1-weighted images and followed fluid density on T2-weighted images. This cyst was noted to displace the globe superiorly and inferior rectus muscle late

BACKGROUND: The radiographic identification of pineal cysts has increased dramatically within the last two decades due to the advent of magnetic resonance imaging. Pineal cysts are often found incidentally with only a minority of these lesions ever becoming symptomatic and requiring treatment. Many theories attempting to explain the pathogenesis of these cysts exist.
METHODS: We describe a case of a 12-year-old girl who presents with a pineal hemorrhage of unknown etiology with associated hydrocephalus.
RESULTS: Her hydrocephalus was initially treated with an external ventricular drain follo

A 2-year-old male is described who presented with fever, fixed flexion deformity of the right hip and a tender mass in the right iliac fossa. A clinical diagnosis of psoas abscess was made. Abdominal ultrasound was suggestive of an echogenic retroperitoneal cyst but could not accurately determine the nature of the cyst. A contrast CT scan showed a retroperitoneal cyst. At laparotomy, a large retroperitoneal cyst containing turbid fluid was found and was excised completely. Histopathological examination was suggestive of cystic lymphangioma. Clinical presentation of retroperitoneal lymphangioma

Mediastinal parathyroid cysts are very rare. Since the first report by DeQuervain, 19 cases have been reported. We encountered a case of mediastinal parathyroid cyst presenting as displacement of the trachea. The cyst originated in the lower portion of the left lobe of the thyroid gland and extended to the mediastinum, displacing the trachea and the esophagus. The monolocular mass was a thin walled cyst, and mognetic imaging indicated that it contained watery fluid. The left lobe of the thyroid gland was found to be displaced upward by the tumor, on thyroid scintigram done with technetium-99,

Five cases of parathyroid cyst are presented and the literature concerning this rare entity is reviewed. Three of the five cysts were located in the neck and were non-functioning. The other two were in the anterior mediastinum and functioning, and indeed were associated with hypercalcemic crisis. Four cases were treated surgically, and in one non-functioning parathyroid cyst both diagnosis and treatment were accomplished with fine-needle aspiration. The cystic appearance, color of the fluid contents, high content of parathyroid hormone and histologic features distinguish parathyroid cyst from

We present a case of 27-year-old female who presented for a progressive frontal swelling with ipsilateral headache. Subsequent CT scan revealed an extradural and expansile multiloculated mass with thin and strongly enhanced septations and MRI evaluation showed internal hyperintensity on T2 with no restriction of diffusion and confirmed the multiple cystic spaces with enhancing septations and rare hemorrhagic fluid-fluid levels. Surgery was performed and diagnosis of aneurysmal bone cyst was made on frozen section. Identification of USP6 fusion gene by in situ hybridization technique permitted

Simple hepatic cysts are usually asymptomatic and rarely cause complications. Among the rare complications of liver cysts, intracystic hemorrhage is one of the most frequent, and can result in a rapid increase in cyst size. Some simple hepatic cysts may be large and can present with pressure effects, such as abdominal discomfort or obstructive jaundice. A 68-year-old female with a simple huge hepatic cyst was scheduled elective laparoscopic fenestration in 6 weeks. Before the operation, she developed acute cholangitis, resulting from an acute increase in cyst size due to intracystic hemorrhage

The computed tomographic (CT) findings of two popliteal cysts are presented, and the correlated anatomico-pathologic changes are discussed. The characteristic findings include thin, well-defined cyst wall, fluid density contents, central septum or septi, and medial popliteal location with mediocaudal extension. These findings, however, may vary due to herniation or rupture of the synovial membrane, gelatinous cyst contents, or metaplastic change of the cyst wall. Differential diagnoses include liposarcoma, popliteal aneurysm or hematoma, thrombophlebitis, xanthoma, fibrosarcoma, or other soft

Four large and several smaller cysts of Echinococcus granulosus were found in the liver of a baboon submitted for necropsy. Three of the large cysts had an atypical structure and were packed with a semi-solid mass of collapsed daughter cysts, small cysts containing fluid and involuted membranes. This atypical structure has been reported previously though only in baboons.

Breast cyst fluids were aspirated during the mild luteal phase of the menstrual cycle from 88 patients with gross cystic disease. According to intracystic Na+/K+ ratio three categories of cyst were identified: Type I with low Na+/K+ ratio, low levels of chloride, glucose, and pH, and high concentrations of dehydroepiandrosterone-sulphate (DHAS) and apocrine epithelium; Type II with high Na+/K+ ratio presenting levels of chloride, glucose, pH, and DHAS similar to those found in plasma, and flattened epithelium; Type III with intermediate values for the above parameters. The findings suggest tha…

BACKGROUND: Large pancreatic cystic lesions (PCLs) have a higher risk of malignant transformation compared with smaller PCLs, although the biological basis for this remains unclear. We aimed to study the high-risk mutation (HRM) patterns in large vs small PCLs using cyst fluid next-generation sequencing (NGS) analysis.
STUDY DESIGN: This is a large multicenter study that included patients with PCLs who underwent pancreatic cyst fluid PancreaSeq NGS testing between January 2018 and February 2020. Patients without index cyst size data were excluded from this study. HRMs were defined as alterati…

CASE DESCRIPTION A client-owned 2-year-old 1.8-kg (4-lb) male pet Rouen duck (Anas platyrhynchos domesticus) was evaluated because of severe swelling around the left eye following traumatic injury to the upper and lower eyelids and 2 associated surgeries that resulted in the removal of the entire upper and lower eyelid margins. CLINICAL FINDINGS At initial evaluation, ankyloblepharon of the left eye was observed, with no upper or lower eyelid margins and a large, round, fluctuant subcutaneous mass over the left orbit. Orbital exploration and histologic examination revealed a benign cyst consis

Protein content, antigenic activity, presence of enzymatic (carboxylesterase) activity and fractional content were determined by high performance liquid chromatography in 6 samples of echinococcal fluid from cysts isolated from sheep, cattle and pigs. Significant differences between the contents of above-mentioned characteristics in various echinococcal fluid samples were observed. The highest content of diagnostically valuable components was revealed in cysts isolated from sheeps' liver. Authors come to the conclusion on the necessity of choosing criteria of assessment of echinococcal fluid s

Parathyroid cysts are grouped into two: functioning and non-functioning cysts. Most of the functioning cysts result from the cystic degeneration of parathyroid adenoma, while, non-functioning cysts, in many cases, originate from Kürsteiner's canal on the third branchial cleft. It is difficult to differentiate parathyroid from thyroid cysts morphologically. However, the measurement of assay of parathyroid and thyroid hormone in the aspirated fluid enables differentiation. Hypercalcemic crisis occurs frequently in the functioning cysts. Moreover, we propose sclerotherapy as the treatment for the

An arachnoid cyst is a benign lesion filled with cerebrospinal fluid that usually develops in the middle cranial fossa. The arachnoid cyst may become symptomatic if it has a large size or when it gets ruptured. Spontaneous rupture of an arachnoid cyst is a very rare complication. We report the case of an 11-year-old girl who was brought to the emergency department with a complaint of a progressive headache that was associated with vomiting. On examination, she was found to have papilledema. Subsequently, magnetic resonance imaging of the brain was performed to exclude any space-occupying lesio

Simple hepatic cysts are common benign lesions that are usually asymptomatic and require no treatment. However, complications can occur. This report describes a patient with an infected hepatic cyst treated with percutaneous transhepatic drainage. A 64-year-old woman presented at a nearby hospital because of acute right-upper-quadrant pain, mild left-lower-quadrant pain, diarrhea, and fever. She was admitted and received intravenous antibiotics for 1 week, but symptoms persisted. She was, therefore, referred to our hospital. On admission, ultrasonography demonstrated multiple hepatic cysts. On

PURPOSE: We retrospectively reviewed the CT findings in 24 cases of autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) to assess the role of CT in the diagnostic work-up of patients with complicated ADPKD.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty-four patients with ADPKD underwent unenhanced and contrast-enhanced CT for flank pain, haematuria, or fever. The images were retrospectively reviewed for presence of complicated cysts, their morphological features and associated findings in the perinephric space/retroperitoneum.
RESULTS: Cyst haemorrhage was present in all patients, seen as high-density cysts
