BACKGROUND: Encrusted cystitis associated with malakoplakia is described in the literature as a rare condition characterized by the formation of calcified plaques adherent to or embedded in the bladder mucosa.
AIMS: We present the case of a 51-year-old male, presenting with recurrent haematuria associated with minimal exercise. Despite normal ultrasound, IVP, two calcified lesions on his bladder were found on cystoscopy. Conservative management was ineffective thereby necessitating a curative partial cystectomy.

BACKGROUND: Evidence from a genetic linkage study had suggested a possible syndrome in some families with panic disorder (PD). This syndrome includes bladder problems (possibly urinary interstitial cystitis [IC]), thyroid disorders, chronic headaches/migraine, and/or mitral valve prolapse. Male chronic pelvic pain syndrome (MCPPS) and interstitial cystitis (IC) patients show striking similarities in clinical presentation, diagnostic evaluation, purported pathogenesis, and even response to therapy. This makes the distinction between them very difficult. This review aims to show just how easy it is for the clinician to miss the features of IC in the MCPPS patient (and conversely). Misdiagnosis can result in the rejection of various potentially helpful therapies while accurate early diagnosis will lead to appropriate therapies and a better quality of life for the patient.

PURPOSE: Hemorrhagic cystitis can occur 6 months to 10 years after pelvic radiation therapy with moderate to severe persistent rates of hematuria as 3% to 5% after radiotherapy for pelvic malignancies. Current treatment modalities for hemorrhagic cystitis include oral and intravenous agents, intravesical therapy and selective embolization of the hypogastric arteries. We report a case of eosinophilic cystitis caused by vesical sparganosis. The patient had a history of eating raw frogs and presented with a mass in the bladder associated with peripheral eosinophilia and increased serum antibody titer against sparganum. Pathologically, a characteristic sinuous necrosis representing worm tracks was noted with massive diffuse infiltration of eosinophils in the wall of the bladder. Single dose treatment regimens (SDT) are effective, inexpensive alternatives to longer courses of therapy for adult females with acute cystitis or asymptomatic bacteriuria. A number of SDT regimens consistently cure 85 to 100% of women with acute cystitis and 50 to 80% of women with asymptomatic bacteriuria. We compared the safety and efficacies of ofloxacin and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole for the treatment of acute uncomplicated cystitis in women enrolled in a multicenter study. P-fimbriation of Escherichia coli is an important factor in the pathogenesis of childhood pyelonephritis. The present study investigates children with single episodes of symptomatic non-febrile urinary tract infection, i.e. cystitis, with respect to clinical appearance and bacteriology, especially the frequency of P-fimbriated E. coli. Clinical and radiographic findings of cystitis are reported in six patients with systemic lupus erythematosus. All patients had clinical manifestations of cystitis; radiography showed the bladder capacities were reduced and the bladder walls were thickened and irregular. During the period 1967 to 1978, 1166 girls were admitted to our department because of urinary tract infection. In 97 of the 439 girls examined by cystoscopy, cystitis cystica was found. The age of the 97 girls varied from 3 to 12 years, mean 7 1/2 years. E. coli was found to be the major pathogenic organism in the urine. All but 3 girls had a history of recurrent urinary tract infection. Urinary tract abnormalities were found with the same frequency as in other studies concerning urinary tract infection in childhood.
