Social, Behavioral, and Cultural factors of HIV in Malawi: Semi-Automated Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Demographic and sociobehavioral factors are strong drivers of HIV infection rates in sub-Saharan Africa. These factors are often studied in qualitative research but ignored in quantitative analyses. However, they provide in-depth insight into the local behavior and may help to improve HIV prevention. OBJECTIVE: To obtain a comprehensive overview of the sociobehavioral factors influencing HIV prevalence and incidence in Malawi, we systematically reviewed the literature using a newly programmed tool for automatizing part of the systematic review process. METHODS: Due to the choice

Digital Hostility Toward LGBTQIA+ Research Recruitment on Social Media Using Topic Modeling and Sentiment Analysis of Facebook Comments: Quantitative Content Analysis Study.

BACKGROUND: Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, intersex, asexual (LGBTQIA+) researchers and participants frequently encounter hostility in virtual environments, particularly on social media platforms where public commentary on research advertisements can foster stigmatization. Despite a growing body of work on researcher virtual hostility, little empirical research has examined the actual content and emotional tone of public responses to LGBTQIA+-focused research recruitment. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to analyze the thematic patterns and sentiment of social media commen

Complication Risk Classification in Children and Adolescents With Type 1 Diabetes: Interpretable Machine Learning Study Based on Saudi Clinical Guidelines.

BACKGROUND: Complication risks in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes (T1D) can lead to serious health outcomes if not detected early. Despite the availability of clinical data, there remains a gap in interpretable tools that support risk stratification in this age group, particularly in alignment with local clinical guidelines. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to develop a clinically interpretable model that classifies the risk levels of T1D complications-acute, chronic, and low-using real-world data and expert clinical rules derived from the Saudi Diabetes Clinical Practice

Calculating the Starting Age for Screening in Relatives of Patients With Colorectal Cancer Based on Data From Large Nationwide Data Sets.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Although colorectal cancer (CRC) screening guidelines acknowledge the need for earlier screening for high-risk individuals, such as those with family history of CRC, there is limited information on how many years earlier these high-risk individuals should be screened; current practice is based on weak evidence. We aimed to provide risk-adapted recommendations on the starting age of CRC screening for individuals with different family histories. METHODS: We collected data from nationwide family-cancer data sets in Sweden and calculated risk-adapted starting ages of screening

Genetic variants associated with susceptibility to psychosis in late-onset Alzheimer's disease families.

Psychotic symptoms are frequent in late-onset Alzheimer's disease (LOAD) patients. Although the risk for psychosis in LOAD is genetically mediated, no genes have been identified. To identify loci potentially containing genetic variants associated with risk of psychosis in LOAD, a total of 263 families from the National Institute of Aging-LOAD cohort were classified into psychotic (LOAD+P, n = 215) and nonpsychotic (LOAD-P, n = 48) families based on the presence/absence of psychosis during the course of LOAD. The LOAD+P families yielded strong evidence of linkage on chromosome 19q13 (two-point

Non-fatal drug overdose surveillance using hospital discharge data: a comparison between the Drug Overdose Surveillance and Epidemiology (DOSE) system and the Healthcare Cost and Utilisation Project, 18 states, 2018-2020.

BACKGROUND: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Drug Overdose Surveillance and Epidemiology (DOSE) system captures non-fatal overdose data from health departments' emergency department (ED) and inpatient hospitalisation discharge data; however, these data have not been compared with other established state-level surveillance systems, which may lag by several years depending on the state. This analysis compared non-fatal overdose rates from DOSE discharge data with rates from the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) in order to compare DOSE data against an established dat

Addressing the Generalizability of AI in Radiology Using a Novel Data Augmentation Framework with Synthetic Patient Image Data: Proof-of-Concept and External Validation for Classification Tasks in Multiple Sclerosis.

Artificial intelligence (AI) models often face performance drops after deployment to external datasets. This study evaluated the potential of a novel data augmentation framework based on generative adversarial networks (GANs) that creates synthetic patient image data for model training to improve model generalizability. Model development and external testing were performed for a given classification task, namely the detection of new fluid-attenuated inversion recovery lesions at MRI during longitudinal follow-up of patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). An internal dataset of 669 patients with

Development and Implementation of a Web-Based International Registry Dedicated to Atypical Pigmented Skin Lesions of the Face: Teledermatologic Investigation on Epidemiology and Risk Factors.

Background: Atypical pigmented facial lesions (aPFLs) often display clinical and dermoscopic equivocal and/or overlapping features, thus causing a challenging and delayed diagnosis and/or inappropriate excisions. No specific registry dedicated to aPFL paired with clinical data is available to date. Methods: The dataset is hosted on a specifically designed web platform. Each complete case was composed of the following data: (1) one dermoscopic picture; (2) one clinical picture; (3) two lesion data, that is, maximum diameter and facial location (e.g., orbital area/forehead/nose/cheek/chin/mouth)

Transillumination and optical coherence tomography for the detection and diagnosis of enamel caries.

BACKGROUND: Caries is one of the most prevalent and preventable conditions worldwide. If identified early enough then non-invasive techniques can be applied, and therefore this review focusses on early caries involving the enamel surface of the tooth. The cornerstone of caries detection and diagnosis is a visual and tactile dental examination, although alternative approaches are available. These include illumination-based devices that could potentially support the dental examination. There are three categories of illumination devices that exploit various methods of application and interpretati

A History of Asthma Increases the Risk of Bullous Pemphigoid: Insights from a Large Population-Based Study.

BACKGROUND: Bullous pemphigoid (BP) and asthma both share a pathogenic role of eosinophils and immunoglobulin E (IgE) and favorable response for corticosteroids and omalizumab. However, the association between these conditions is yet to be investigated. We sought to estimate the risk of having BP among patients previously diagnosed with asthma and to characterize patients with coexistent BP and asthma. METHODS: Utilizing the dataset of Clalit Health Services, a population-based case-control study was conducted comparing BP patients (n = 3,924) with age-, sex-, and ethnicity-matched control su

Functional parcellation of human and macaque striatum reveals human-specific connectivity in the dorsal caudate.

A wide homology between human and macaque striatum is often assumed as in both the striatum is involved in cognition, emotion and executive functions. However, differences in functional and structural organization between human and macaque striatum may reveal evolutionary divergence and shed light on human vulnerability to neuropsychiatric diseases. For instance, dopaminergic dysfunction of the human striatum is considered to be a pathophysiological underpinning of different disorders, such as Parkinson's disease (PD) and schizophrenia (SCZ). Previous investigations have found a wide similarit

Sixteen novel lineages of SARS-CoV-2 in South Africa.

The first severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection in South Africa was identified on 5 March 2020, and by 26 March the country was in full lockdown (Oxford stringency index of 90)1. Despite the early response, by November 2020, over 785,000 people in South Africa were infected, which accounted for approximately 50% of all known African infections2. In this study, we analyzed 1,365 near whole genomes and report the identification of 16 new lineages of SARS-CoV-2 isolated between 6 March and 26 August 2020. Most of these lineages have unique mutations that have not

A Retrospective Study of Coinfection of SARS-CoV-2 and Streptococcus pneumoniae in 11 Hospitalized Patients with Severe COVID-19 Pneumonia at a Single Center.

BACKGROUND A lethal synergism between the influenza virus and Streptococcus pneumoniae has been identified. However, bacterial coinfection is considered relatively infrequent in hospitalized patients with COVID-19, and the co-prevalence of Streptococcus pneumoniae is low. MATERIAL AND METHODS We retrospectively analyzed the clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients subsequently admitted to AMITA Health Saint Francis Hospital between March 1 and June 30, 2020, with documented SARS-CoV-2 and S. pneumoniae coinfection. RESULTS We identified 11 patients with S. pneumoniae coinfection. The

Identification of contributing genes of Huntington's disease by machine learning.

BACKGROUND: Huntington's disease (HD) is an inherited disorder caused by the polyglutamine (poly-Q) mutations of the HTT gene results in neurodegeneration characterized by chorea, loss of coordination, cognitive decline. However, HD pathogenesis is still elusive. Despite the availability of a wide range of biological data, a comprehensive understanding of HD's mechanism from machine learning is so far unrealized, majorly due to the lack of needed data density. METHODS: To harness the knowledge of the HD pathogenesis from the expression profiles of postmortem prefrontal cortex samples of 157 H

Satellite isoprene retrievals constrain emissions and atmospheric oxidation.

Isoprene is the dominant non-methane organic compound emitted to the atmosphere1-3. It drives ozone and aerosol production, modulates atmospheric oxidation and interacts with the global nitrogen cycle4-8. Isoprene emissions are highly uncertain1,9, as is the nonlinear chemistry coupling isoprene and the hydroxyl radical, OH-its primary sink10-13. Here we present global isoprene measurements taken from space using the Cross-track Infrared Sounder. Together with observations of formaldehyde, an isoprene oxidation product, these measurements provide constraints on isoprene emissions and atmospher
