Diverse language experiences in deaf infants and in hearing infants with deaf parents: 25 years of improved understanding and recognition.

Most infants first encounter language through the words spoken in their environment. However, for a smaller number of deaf and hearing infants, language can be presented in different sensory modalities, including a visual-manual signed language (e.g. American Sign Language - ASL or British Sign Language - BSL) and an auditory-oral spoken language (e.g. English). Language acquisition trajectories for children exposed to both signed and spoken language are less understood and less recognised. For hearing children with deaf parents using sign language, recent research suggests that they develop a

Nursing students' knowledge of working with D/deaf and hard of hearing patients: Evaluation of a deaf awareness elearning package.

AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate a newly developed Deaf awareness e-learning package with nursing students at one university in Wales, UK. BACKGROUND: D/deaf and hard of hearing communities face a multitude of barriers when accessing and receiving healthcare leading to under diagnosis of health conditions and poorer health outcomes in general. Lack of awareness, teaching, and exposure to the D/deaf and hard of hearing populations during health care professional training programmes has been shown to contribute to this health disparity. DESIGN: A descriptive cross-sectional design wa

Hair cell apoptosis and deafness in Tmc1 mutations.

Transmembrane channel-like protein 1 (TMC1), a pore-forming component of the mechano-electrical transducer (MET) channel in cochlear outer hair cells, is subject to numerous mutations causing deafness and hair cell death. We studied mice harboring semidominant mutations Tmc1 p.T416K, p.M412K, and p.D569N, which all display functional MET channels at postnatal day (P)6 but become deaf by P21. Early signs of concomitant hair cell apoptosis were assayed in neonatal Tmc1 mutants by labeling with Calcein-acetomethyl ester (AM), MitoTracker, and Annexin V, the latter labeling scramblase externalizat…

Hereditary deafness carrier screening in 9,993 Chinese individuals.

Background: Preconception or prenatal carrier screening plays an important role in reproductive decision-making, but current research on hereditary deafness is limited. This study aimed to investigate the carrier frequencies of common deafness genes in the Chinese population who underwent carrier screening and to follow up on pregnancy outcomes in high-chance couples. Methods: Individual females or couples in preconception or early pregnancy were recruited from two hospitals in China. Carrier screening for common deafness genes in the Chinese population, including the GJB2 and SLC26A4 genes, w…

Connectome alterations following perinatal deafness in the cat.

Following sensory deprivation, areas and networks in the brain may adapt and reorganize to compensate for the loss of input. These adaptations are manifestations of compensatory crossmodal plasticity, which has been documented in both human and animal models of deafness-including the domestic cat. Although there are abundant examples of structural plasticity in deaf felines from retrograde tracer-based studies, there is a lack of diffusion-based knowledge involving this model compared to the current breadth of human research. The purpose of this study was to explore white matter structural ada…

Political deafness may impede transition to biological control.

Biological control has developed into a realistic alternative to replace chemical pesticides. A long-awaited paradigm shift is now adopted by the European Commission through a proposed new Regulation on sustainable use of plant protection products. Unfortunately, the scientific framework underpinning biocontrol is seriously neglected, impeding transition to sustainable plant production.

Phenotypic characterization of retinitis pigmentosa associated with deafness.

Introduction: There are several syndromes that associate retinitis pigmentosa with deafness or hearing loss. The most frequent is Usher syndrome, a genetic disorder of autosomal recessive inheritance, which, in some cases, is accompanied by vestibular dysfunction. However, there are cases of families that despite having retinitis pigmentosa associated with deafness, cannot be classified as Usher or other syndromes due to additional findings. Objective: To reassess the phenotypes of 103 families previously diagnosed as possible Usher syndrome and/or retinitis pigmentosa associated with deafness…

Deafness and early language deprivation influence arithmetic performances.

It has been consistently reported that deaf individuals experience mathematical difficulties compared to their hearing peers. However, the idea that deafness and early language deprivation might differently affect verbal (i.e., multiplication) vs. visuospatial (i.e., subtraction) arithmetic performances is still under debate. In the present paper, three groups of 21 adults (i.e., deaf signers, hearing signers, and hearing controls) were therefore asked to perform, as fast and as accurately as possible, subtraction and multiplication operations. No significant group effect was found for accurac…

Cochlear implantation after deafness from Pasteurella multocida meningitis.

A woman in her late 40s who works as a veterinary technician represented to the emergency department with increasing headache, confusion, neck stiffness, subjective fevers and distorted hearing 2 days after diagnosis of viral infection at an outside emergency department.Diagnosis of Pasteurella multocida was made from blood cultures and lumbar puncture. Intravenous ceftriaxone was administered for 21 days. By the time of resolution of acute meningitis, she had become completely deaf bilaterally. MRI revealed faint early ossification/possible labyrinthitis ossificans of the basal cochlea, which

Genetics & Epigenetics of Hereditary Deafness: An Historical Overview.

Hearing loss (HL) is one of the most common sensory impairments worldwide and represents a critical medical and public health issue. Since t … lly increased the diagnostic rate for genetic HL, enabling the detection of novel variants in known deafness-related genes and the discovery of new genes implicated in hearing disease. Overall, genetic factors account for at least 40% of the cases with HL, but a portion of affected patients still lack a definite molecular diagnosis. Important steps forward …

[Clinical practice guidelines for hereditary non-syndromic deafness].

Genetic factors are a common cause for non-syndromic hearing loss (NSHL). Along with the development and maturity of molecular techniques, genetic diagnosis and counseling is increasingly affecting the clinical practice of NSHL. Newborn hearing screening has facilitated early detection of affected children, whilst genetic screening has enabled identification of the cause of NSHL, and genetic diagnosis and consultation can promote early intervention of deafness. So far 110 pathogenic genes of NSHL have been discovered, though there are still many challenges lying in its clinical identification.…

Cortical deafness of following bilateral temporal lobe stroke.

Cortical deafness is an extremely rare clinical manifestation that originates mainly from bilateral cortical lesions in the primary auditory cortex. Its main clinical manifestation is the bilateral sudden loss of hearing. Diagnosis is difficulty due to its rarity and similarity with other language and communication disorders, such as Wernicke's aphasia, auditory agnosia or verbal deafness. Herein, we present a case report of a young woman with a sudden bilateral loss of auditory comprehension. Initially, a psychiatric nature of the disorder was considered, but the persistence of the symptoms, …

Superficial siderosis misdiagnosed as idiopathic bilateral neurosensorial deafness.

Superficial siderosis (SS) is a rare condition resulting from different sources of bleeding into the subpial space. The most common symptoms are: hypoacusia, ataxia, incontinence, dementia and parkinsonism. Since several neurodegenerative disorders may present with same clinical features, SS is often misdiagnosed. Here we present a case of SS misdiagnosed as idiopathic bilateral neurosensorial deafness.
