Elaeophorosis in white-tailed deer: pathology of the natural disease and its relation to oral food impactions.

The lesions of naturally occurring elaeophorosis in white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) were studied. Arterial changes caused by adult Elaeophora schneideri occurred mainly in cephalic arteries and were characterized by circumferential intimal thickening, disruption of the internal elastic lamina, and verminous thrombosis. Microfilariae caused focal necrosis and fibrosis in the myocardium, but produced only minor changes in other tissues. Radiographic studies indicated that E. schneideri can cause impairment of the cephalic arterial circulation in white-tailed deer. Eleven of 14 (78%) i…

Evidence for heterosynaptic pairing of the inverted segment in pericentric inversion heterozygotes of the deer mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus).

Silver-stained pachytene cells of male deer mice, Peromyscus maniculatus, which were heterozygous for a naturally occurring pericentric inversion of chromosome 6, were analyzed by light microscopy. The presence of the terminally positioned inversion, involving approximately 30% of the length of chromosome 6, was detected by G-banding. Within the inversion, C-band-positive heterochromatin was restricted to the centromeric region. Silver-staining of spermatocytes revealed the synaptonemal complexes (SCs) of the autosomal bivalents and the X-Y chromosome association. Pachytene cells were scored f…

Photoperiodicity and circannual levels of LH, FSH, and testosterone in normal and castrated male, white-tailed deer.

To establish the relation between photoperiodicity and the levels of LH, FSH, and testosterone (T) in plasma, three intact and three castrated adult male white-tailed deer were sampled once a month for 2-3 years. The rang of average LH levels in controls varied between 0.8 and 2.0 ng/mL; the levels in castrates were considerably higher, 3.4 to 8.9 ng/mL. Average levels of FSH varied in controls between 25 and 112 ng/mL and in castrates between 141 and 240 ng/mL. A significant correlation between the seasonal time course of LH and FSH was found in castrated, but not in intact bucks. In castrate…

Protocol for the assessment of the impact of mycotoxins and glyphosate residues on the gut microbiome and resistome of European fallow deer.

Here, we present a protocol to describe the bacteriome of the intestinal content of toxin-exposed fallow deer. We describe steps for measuring fecal mycotoxin (deoxynivalenol, zearalenone, fumonisin B1, and aflatoxin B1) levels using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, as well as serum glyphosate. We then detail a short-read shotgun DNA sequencing-based bioinformatic pipeline for the toxin level-associated analysis of the bacteriome and resistome and the construction of metagenome-assembled bacterial genomes. This protocol has potential applications in further toxin level-associated metag…

Epidemiologic survey and genotyping of Enterocytozoon bieneusi in sika deer (Cervus nippon) in four provinces of China.

Microsporidia are obligate intracellular parasites with a wide host range. To elucidate the relationship between Enterocytozoon bieneusi infection dynamics and evolution within China's sika deer population, 466 fresh fecal samples were collected from May to October 2024 across four provinces, Jilin, Liaoning, Heilongjiang, and Shandong. The ITS region of ribosomal RNA (rRNA) was amplified using nested PCR, enabling the identification and genotyping of E. bieneusi. The overall prevalence of E. bieneusi in sika deer was 44.4% (207/466). Province-specific prevalence was highest in Shandong (76.0%…

A Visual and Rapid PCR Test Strip Method for the Authentication of Sika Deer Meat (Cervus nippon).

The rising price of sika deer meat is increasing the risk of economic adulteration, highlighting the need for rapid and reliable authentication methods to protect both market integrity and consumers. This work presents a novel countermeasure: a polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based nucleic acid test strip designed for the specific and visual identification of sika deer meat. Our approach commenced with the design of specific primers targeting the cytochrome C oxidase subunit I (COI) gene. To guarantee the reliability of the assay, a DNA standard plasmid was constructed to serve as an unambiguo…

Doe diligence: A regional analysis of antlerless deer harvest regulations in the Midwestern United States of America.

Wildlife management in the United States of America (US) is primarily delegated to the individual states wherein state wildlife agencies manage wildlife populations to achieve multiple and sometimes conflicting objectives. White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) are an important species in the Midwestern US whose populations are primarily managed through recreational hunting. Managers aim to adjust populations by altering the harvest of antlerless (usually female) animals by changing the number of harvest permits available, hunting season lengths, or applying incentive programs like earn-a-…

Molecular identification of severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus in deer ked: Implications for disease transmission.

Severe Fever with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome Virus (SFTSV) is a highly pathogenic tick-borne virus that causes hemorrhagic fever in humans, with a mortality rate of up to 30 %. SFTSV has been primarily detected in arachnid vectors, particularly Haemaphysalis longicornis. While the majority of human SFTSV infections are linked to tick exposure, a significant proportion of cases have no reported history of tick bites, suggesting the existence of alternative vectors. Here, we report the first detection of SFTSV RNA in deer ked (Lipoptena fortisetosa, family Hippoboscidae) using reverse transcripti…

A family cluster of Brucella abortus infections possibly due to contact with a sika deer in Northeast China.

Brucellosis is one of the most common zoonotic diseases worldwide. Although deer are reportedly infected by Brucella spp., deer-associated brucellosis cases have been rare. In this study, two patients in Heilongjiang Province, Northeast China, were diagnosed with brucellosis. They have contacted a sick sika deer before onset which was bought from another province, but have no contact with other infection sources. Molecular genotyping indicated that both were infected with Brucella abortus. This might be the first human cases caused by deer-associated B. abortus strains despite the frequent rep…

Transmission and Characterization of Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease and Chronic Wasting Disease in the North American Deer Mouse.

Prion transmission into rodents is essential for understanding prion strains. However, it is often limited by a "species barrier" that makes transmission challenging and complicates the study of animal and human prion diseases. Here, we report that North American deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) are susceptible to infection with both human sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (sCJD) and chronic wasting disease (CWD). Experimental transmission of both sCJD and CWD in deer mice resulted in 100% attack rates, albeit with differing incubation times, with CWD-inoculated mice taking nearly three tim…

Histological and histochemical characterization of the musk gland in forest musk deer (Moschus berezovskii): a preliminary study.

Musk is a biologically valuable secretion from the musk gland of male musk deer, with significant economic and medicinal importance. Due to severe decline and depletion of wild musk deer population, captive breeding of musk deer has become the primary approach for sustainable musk production. So far, the histological structure and secretion mechanism of the musk gland remain incompletely understood. In this study, we employed histological and immunohistochemical (IHC) techniques, along with three-dimensional (3D) tissue reconstruction, to systematically analyze the cellular composition and sec…

Analysis and comparison of blood metabolome of forest musk deer in musk secretion and non-secretion periods.

Musk is an important animal product, but the musk secretion mechanism of forest musk deer (Moschus berezovskii) is still unclear. The musk synthesis process in forest musk deer is extremely complex, and many raw materials are directly or indirectly derived from forest musk deer blood. In this study, metabolomics was used to analyze the blood of forest musk deer in secretory and non-secretory phases for the first time, aim at explaining the secretion mechanism from the perspective of blood metabolism. We found that P450-related, choline-related, axonal regeneration and other pathways and relate…

Detection of Point Prevalence and Assemblages of Giardia spp. in Dairy Calves and Sika Deer, Northeast China.

Giardia lamblia (syn Giardia duodenalis) is an important protozoan parasite that can cause enterocyte damage and loss of brush border of the epithelial cells in the intestine, resulting in shortening of microvilli and altered epithelial barrier function. Many animals have been detected as the hosts of the G. lamblia. However, the information on the epidemiology and molecular detection of G. lamblia in dairy calves and sika deer in northeastern China is limited. To investigate the prevalence and genotypes of dairy calves and sika deer in northeastern China, a total of 321 fecal samples from dai…

Differential diagnosis for a mandibular mass - a rare case of an odontoameloblastoma in a red deer (Cervus elaphus elaphus).

BACKGROUND: Mandibular masses caused by inflammatory processes due to bacterial infections, most common with Actinomyces bovis, are well known in herbivors. This case represents a rare differential diagnosis to common inflammatory processes which cannot be distinguished from neoplasia without detailed histopathological examination. CASE PRESENTATION: A large unilateral mandibular mass of a free-ranging female adult red deer (Cervus elaphus elaphus) was submitted for pathological examination. The animal had been shot due to its poor body condition. Grossly, the mandibular mass showed gingival …

Fatal Case of Rabies in a Captive White-Tailed Deer: A Case Report from Chiapas, Mexico.

Rabies is a fatal viral infection that causes enc ephalitis in warm-blooded animals, including humans. Dog-transmitted rabies is considered eradicated in Mexico; however, rabies is not being tested in livestock with neurological symptoms (one of the main manifestations of rabies disease). In this case report, we describe a rabies case in a white-tailed deer in the Santo Domingo ranch, in Catazajá, Chiapas, Mexico, where white-tailed deer are kept under captivity, and are meant for human consumption. This is the first report of a rabies case in white-tailed deer in Mexico. We also describe the …
