INTRODUCTION: From 1996 through 2000, we collected data on 86 patients with similar symptoms following a tick bite. The inclusion criteria w … opsy samples.
RESULTS: Seventy-six patients described an "extremely big" tick, and/or recognised a Dermacentor spp. tick from a collection of several species indigenous to Hungary. The tick bite was usually (96%) located on the scalp region. The time from the recognition of the tick bite to the first symptom varied between 0 and 55 (mean nine) days. A charac …

Ticks are important vectors for several pathogens, among which Francisella tularensis subsp. holarctica is the most relevant tularaemia-causing subspecies in Europe. The number of human tularaemia cases in Germany has increased in recent years, and ticks play an important role in disease transmission. The aim of this study was to perform a pilot study addressing the presence of tick-borne pathogens in ticks across Germany, with a special focus on Francisella. A total of 339 Dermacentor reticulatus ticks and 353 Ixodes ricinus ticks were collected in Germany between 2021 and 2024. DNA was extra…

A total of 54 hard ticks (38 Ixodes canisuga, 6 Haemaphysalis erinacei, 9 Ixodes kaiseri and 1 Dermacentor marginatus) were collected from red foxes and 12 (I. kaiseri) from Asian badgers. All ticks were adults. Among them, one I. kaiseri parasiting a red fox contained the DNA of B. vulpes while one I. canisuga was positive for Babesia sp. belonging to t …

Cases of Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) in North Carolina have escalated markedly since 2000. In 2005, we identified a county in the Piedmont region with high case numbers of RMSF. We collected ticks and examined them for bacterial pathogens using molecular methods to determine if a novel tick vector or spotted fever group rickettsiae (SFGR) might be emerging. Amblyomma americanum, the lone star tick, comprised 99.6% of 6,502 specimens collected in suburban landscapes. In contrast, Dermacentor variabilis, the American dog tick, a principal vector of Rickettsia rickettsii, comprised < 1% o…

OBJECTIVE: To understand the coinfection status of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (B.b.s.l) and spotted fever group Rickettsia (SFGR) in Hu … sulcatus ticks, with an infection rate of 2.0%. The coinfection rate of both agents was 2.0%. In 327 Dermacentor siltarum ticks, the positive rates of B. b. s. l and SFGR were 30.9% and 29.1% respectively. 55 ticks (16.8%) were coinfected with the two pathogens. The sequence analysis of B. b. s. l showed that the B. b. s. l in Jilin area, which were highly hom …

Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever orthonairovirus (CCHFV) is a negative-sense, single-stranded RNA virus with a segmented genome and the causative agent of a severe Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) disease. The virus is transmitted mainly by tick species in Hyalomma genus but other ticks such as representatives of genera Dermacentor and Rhipicephalus may also be involved in virus life cycle. To improve our understanding of CCHFV adaptation to its tick species, we compared nucleotide composition and codon usage patterns among the all CCHFV strains i) which sequences and other metadata as …

Rocky Mountain spotted fever is a tick-borne disease that is highly dangerous but often overlooked by the public. To prevent the spread of the disease, it is important to understand the distribution patterns of its vectors' suitable areas. This study aims to explore the potential global suitability of areas for the vectors of Rocky Mountain spotted fever, including Dermacentor variabilis and Amblyomma cajennense under both historical and future climate scenarios. The study also seeks to investigate the impact of climatic factors on the distribution patterns of these vectors. Data on species di…
