It is generally admitted that contact dermatitis seldom appears in children. Eighty-seven cases, however, have been diagnosed at the Department of Allergology of the Dermatological Clinic in Strasbourg in the past 10 years (1969-1978). No element of atopic diathesis could be found in any of them. We have reviewed the cases with a positive patch test to try to derive both theoretical and practical conclusions.

A series of White women seen in a dermatological private practice were investigated for causes of dermatitis of the eyelids. Patch tests were done with test substances of known allergenicity used as ingredients of vehicles of cosmetics and medicaments and also with substances which could be conveyed to the eyelids by the fingertips from distant sites. Patients were also patch-tested and usage tests were done with cosmetics currently used on the face, nails and hair. The commonest cause of the contact allergic dermatitis of the eyelids was a variety of facial creams.

Dermatitis herpetiformis has been associated with a variety of thyroid abnormalties. A case of thyrotoxicosis in a patient with pre-existing dermatitis herpetiformis is reported. Thyroid antibodies were present in the serum. This may suggest an immunologic relationship between dermatitis herpetiformis and thyroid disorders, that may be more than fortuitous.

Most junior hairdressers, while shampooing, develop a dry irritant dermatitis over the metacarpophalangeal joints. It responds to simple treatment and disappears when the shampooing stage is passed. A few hairdressers develop eczema of the fingers: the response to treatment is less predictable and the prognosis is worse. In those who give up hairdressing the eczema generally improves or heals, in those who continue hairdressing the eczema is likely to persist, especially in atopics.

During a 3 1/2-year period, 492 patients with dermatitis herpetiformis (DH) visited the dermatological departments of Finnish hospitals. The prevalence of DH in Finland was 10.4 patients/100,000 inhabitants, or 1/10,000. About 60 patients contracted DH each year, giving an incidence of 1.3 patients/100,000 inhabitants/year. The authors refer those dermatoses called "Rosacea like" or "Rosaceiform Dermatitis" that always offer differential diagnosis with Rosacea. Some of them supposedly have tuberculous etiology.
