PURPOSE: Machinists are exposed to many sensitizing and irritant substances, but no previous study has assessed the occurrence of clinically verified occupational diseases in an unselected large workforce of machinists. Our aim was to study the occurrence of clinically verified occupational respiratory and skin diseases cross-sectionally in a large sample of machinists in southern Finland.
METHODS: A computer-assisted telephone interview on occupational exposures and health was carried out in a sample of 961 machining workers from 64 metalworking companies. Of these, 757 (79%) answered the in

BACKGROUND: Allergic contact dermatitis involving the hands is a common occupational skin disease for hairdressers and the potent sensitizers p -phenylenediamine (PPD) and toluene-2,5-diamine (PTD) are associated with the development of occupational allergic contact dermatitis.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to analyze whether the use of the moderate sensitizer 2-methoxymethyl-PPD (ME-PPD) in professional hair dyes is a suitable tool to reduce the occupational contact allergy risk for hairdressers.
METHODS: Hand exposure of hairdressers (N = 11) to ME-PPD was analyzed under routine hair

The high risk of occupational contact dermatitis in dental personnel are well accepted throughout the world. There are few reports concerning occupational skin disease in dental personnel in Korea. The purposes of this study were to investigate the frequency, characteristics and causative factors of contact dermatitis in Korean dental technicians. Recording of personal history, physical examination and patch tests with the Korean standard series and dental screening series were performed in 49 dental technicians. Most of the subjects were exposed to a variety of compounds, including acrylics,

AIM: To randomly audit the boat building industry in New Zealand to assess the occupational health status and level of knowledge of employees.
METHODS: A survey was conducted using a nurse and inspector administered questionnaire. 151 workers from 120 randomly selected firms participated in the survey.
RESULTS: 31.5% respondents thought they had had some sort of work related health problem since working in that job. 22% reported wheezing during the last twelve months. 14-16% met criteria for occupational causation, and 4% met a measure of severe wheezing related to work. 25.6% of workers had

Since the National Health Service came into force in 1948, there has been a steady flow of patients referred by the Ministry of Pensions and National Insurance to dermatologists. These patients claim to suffer from a Prescribed Disease, and the dermatologist has to determine whether they have a skin condition produced by certain occupational agents prescribed by the Minister. Basically these have always been dust, liquid, and vapour occurring in occupations where these substances are encountered. Before 1959 Prescribed Disease relating to skin conditions was numbered 24b, but since then it has

We report an outbreak of irritant contact dermatitis in the aerospace industry from electrodischarge machining (EDM). 20 workers doing EDM developed irritant contact dermatitis from the dielectric fluid used in EDM, a form of precision metal machining that is widely used in mould making and precision engineering. Dielectric fluid contains hydrocarbons that are aromatic, paraffinic or naphthenic and are skin irritants. Irritant contact dermatitis from dielectric fluid has not been reported previously. EDM will become more widespread and occupational dermatitis from dielectric fluid is likely to

There are many types of occupational skin diseases that can occur in nursing environments, and they are common. The most widespread is undoubtedly irritant contact dermatitis due to exposure to physical, mechanical, or chemical irritants that are ultimately inherent in most healthcare and prevention professions. Other types of dermatitis (infectious, physical, or immunoallergic) are also worth mentioning.

A study of occupational dermatoses is described. 97% of 389 cases were contact dermatitis, of which 66.3% were irritant and 33.7% allergic, in both male and female workers. Cutting oils, solvents and flux from the engineering and electronic industries were the commonest irritants, and chromate from cement in the construction industry was the commonest allergen. The other occupational allergens were rubber chemicals and epoxy resin. The construction industry was the largest source of occupational dermatoses cases seen; possible preventive measures are discussed.

BACKGROUND: Occupational skin diseases have led the occupational disease statistics in Europe for many years. Especially occupational allergic contact dermatitis is associated with a poor prognosis and low healing rates leading to an enormous burden for the affected individual and for society.
OBJECTIVES: To present the sensitization frequencies to the most relevant allergens of the European baseline series in patients with occupational contact dermatitis (OCD) and to compare sensitization profiles of different occupations.
METHODS: The data of 16 022 patients considered having OCD after pat

The prevalence of allergic diseases is progressively increasing, but the proportion attributable to occupational agents is not completely known. Most epidemiological data regards occupational asthma due to sensitising agents, which is the most common and frequently compensated occupational respiratory disease. The epidemiology of the so called "irritant asthma" and of occupational rhinitis is less clear, although rhinitis is often associated to asthma and/or precedes its clinical manifestation. The epidemiology of occupational allergic dermatitis has not been completely investigated as well. T

Footwear contact dermatitis is a common problem with multifactorial exogenous, as well as endogenous, etiologies. Patch testing is the gold standard for detection of the possible contactants. A cross-sectional study was conducted in 108 outpatients over a period of 18 months. Demographic data comprising age, sex, and occupation were collected. Details of clinical and laboratory investigations were used to define the incriminating ingredient(s), subsequently confirmed by patch test using Indian standard and footwear series approved by the Contact and Occupational Dermatitis Forum of India. From answers by one-third of the practicing dermatologists in the San Francisco Bay Area to a questionnaire on occupational skin diseases, contact dermatitis due to irritants and sensitizers was found to rank first. Poison oak, which is the leading reported cause on "Doctor's First Report of Work Injury" received by the California Department of Industrial Relations, was sixth on the list of the survey, trailing solvents, cleansing agents, petroleum products and epoxy resins. A history of atopic dermatitis was often noted in current cases of occupational diseases of the skin. Avoidance of expos

Phototoxic textile dermatitis with subsequent hyperpigmentation developed in two patients after they wore bikini bathing suits. After extraction of the dye from the bathing suits, 15 fractions could be visualized by two-dimensional thin-layer chromatography. Two of these fractions are found in Disperse Blue 35, an anthraquinone dye known to give rise to occupational phototoxic dermatitis, but which, to our knowledge, has never been reported to cause dermatitis in consumers. One of the two fractions was also found to cause phototoxic reactions in normal subjects.

BACKGROUND: Geriatric nurses (GN) have a high risk of occupational contact dermatitis (OCD), with chronic irritant contact dermatitis predominating. However, allergic contact dermatitis is an important issue as well. Little is known whether the relevant occupational allergen spectrum reported in the 1990s, including fragrances, preservatives, rubber chemicals and ingredients of surface disinfectants to be the most common sensitizers in GN, is still valid.
OBJECTIVES: To monitor the current allergen spectrum in GN with OCD and verify the validity of the patch test recommendations (baseline-, p
