Physician education on infant hearing loss in a developing country.

BACKGROUND: Physicians often account for delays in detection and intervention for infant hearing loss for reasons that are rarely investigated, especially in developing countries. This study, therefore, explores current physician knowledge, attitude and training towards infant hearing loss in Nigeria. METHODS: Knowledge of documented risk factors, intervention options and attitude towards timely intervention for infant hearing loss was investigated through a questionnaire survey among 246 final year medical students and 161 physicians drawn from tertiary hospitals in Lagos. Maternal views on infant hearing loss in a developing country.

BACKGROUND: Parental support for infant hearing loss is essential for a successful infant screening programme. However, in developing countries where unfavourable customs and beliefs towards childhood disabilities have been reported, parental support towards infant screening is uncertain and there is presently no published evidence on the subject. OBJECTIVE: To elicit the views of mothers and would-be mothers in order to ascertain their knowledge on infant hearing loss and their attitudes towards infant hearing screening. METHODS: A structured questionnaire consisting of 15 questions was adm…

Predictors of hearing loss in school entrants in a developing country.

BACKGROUND: Hearing loss is a prevalent and significant disability that impairs functional development and educational attainment of school children in developing countries. Lack of a simple and practical screening protocol often deters routine and systematic hearing screening at school entry. AIM: To identify predictors of hearing loss for a practical screening model in school-aged children. SETTINGS AND DESIGN: Community-based, retrospective case-control study of school entrants in an inner city. METHODS: Results from the audiologic and non-audiologic examination of 50 hearing impaired ch…

Nutrition problems of hospitalised children in a developing country: Thailand.

Nutritional assessment reveals the nutritional status of a patient. It thereby helps identify each patient's need for specific nutritional c … ited information about nutritional status of hospitalised patients in some countries, especially in developing countries. In Thailand, it was found that the prevalence of hospital malnutrition in children aged 1-15 years in the paediatric ward was similar (50-60%) to that of a study conducted 10 years earlier. In another study of micronutrients in 45 paediatric AIDS p …

Early postnatal assessment of the newborn in the developing country: Malawi.

The high rate of infant mortality, defined as the number of deaths in the first year of life for every 1000 babies born alive (WHO, 1981), is recognized as an extremely serious problem in the developing world. Worldwide decreases in the number of infant deaths are occurring; however, the gap continues to increase in countries with high socioeconomic baselines and those with low per capita income. This article discusses ways in which relevant health care policies and the use of newborn assessment tools can decrease infant mortality in Malawi Central Africa. The description of the tool, Newborn

Management of unrepairable urinary vaginal fistulae in a developing country.

Thirty-eight out of 44 patients with unrepairable urinary and rectal vaginal fistulae obtained good to excellent results from diverting the urine by uretero-colic anastomosis. The patients who hitherto were regarded as social outcasts became integrated into society once again. Intestinal conduits are generally not employed for urinary diversion, because of the social dislike for colostomies and ileostomies, coupled with the lack of availability of the necessary external appliances, in Nigeria. In spite of the good results recorded, it is felt that urinary diversion by uretero-colic anastomosis

The role of the laboratory in a Chlamydia control programme in a developing country.

The laboratory components of a Chlamydia trachomatis disease control programme for a developing country are reviewed. Early diagnosis of chlamydial infections is the most cost effective means of preventing the long term sequelae of trachoma, pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy and infertility, which are now a major public health burden to the health care system in developing countries. Public health strategies are required to establish both a co-ordinated limited system of laboratory services, and to promote the diagnosis and treatment of disease syndromes in the absence of laborato…

[Gunshot wounds. Therapeutic possibilities in a developing African country].

This report is based on experience with the treatment of 135 patients who had sustained mainly gunshot injuries but also injuries from mines and hand grenades. The different sorts of the therapy were directly dependent on the different injury causes. Second- and third-grade fractures caused by middle and high velocity projectiles were treated by the open method, external fixation, debridement and draining. The therapy of choice is the application of a fixateur externe (external fixation). The prognosis after fixation with further treatment as needed was very good, even when not performed until

Neonatal group B streptococcal septicaemia in a developing country.

During a 3-year study at the neonatal intensive care unit, University Hospital of the West Indies, the incidence of group B streptococcal (GBS) septicaemia was 13.6/1,000 admissions and 1.4/1,000 live births. GBS accounted for 35% of blood culture isolates and was the most frequent cause of septicaemia. Underlying disease or other possible predisposing factors were identified in 16 of 25 neonates with GBS septicaemia. Comparison of early onset and late onset disease indicated an increased incidence of prematurity, prolonged rupture of membranes, and respiratory distress in the former and a pre

A review of perinatal mortality in an urban situation in a developing country.

Perinatal deaths occurring within the City of Harare, Zimbabwe, during 1983 were studied. Data were collected from all known deliveries within the city. This included exact numbers from three central maternity hospitals, and from referring midwife-run maternity clinics. An estimate was made of the number of births and perinatal deaths occurring within the city, but outside these official maternity facilities. All perinatal deaths were reviewed. The birthweight, the cause of death, and the antenatal care registration status of the mother were established. There were 2103 perinatal deaths from a

Palliative Care Research in a Developing Country: A Scoping Review.

Among the many barriers to universal access to palliative care is the lack of research. This is most prominent in low-to-middle-income countries such as the Philippines. A scoping review methodology was utilised to identify and examine publications regarding palliative care in the Philippines from January 1994 to November 2024. Data were charted with respect to year of publication, research methodologies use
