INTRODUCTION: Stroke is a growing epidemic in the developing countries. The risk factors of stroke are the same as those of atherosclerosis, but the relative incidences of the various risk factors keep changing with time and cultural and environmental factors. So, a periodic analysis should be done.
AIMS AND OBJECTIVE: The generation of the data which pertained to the clinical profile of stroke in our institution by using the WHO Steps Stroke Manual, version 2 and to make note of the risk factors and the correlation of the outcome with the Glasgow's Coma Scale (GCS) at admission and with the

BACKGROUND: Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is a disorder with high mortality in central nervous system, especially in old population. Misdiagnosis and poor outcome frequently occur in old patients with SAH. This research is to investigate the demographic characteristics, clinical features, neuroimaging data, and the outcome of the old patients (≥60 of age) with SAH.
METHODS: The data was from both neurosurgical and neurology departments of two hospitals in Chongqing, China, from October 2007 to March 2009. One hundred and seventy eight patients were enrolled and divided into two groups: the el

OBJECTIVE: Stroke is the most prevalent disease involving the central nervous system. Since medical modalities are sometimes ineffective for the acute edema following massive infarction, surgical decompression may be an effective option when medical treatments fail. The present study was undertaken to assess the outcome and prognostic factors of decompressive surgery in life threatening acute, severe, brain infarction.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed twenty-six patients (17 males and 9 females; average age, 49.7yrs) who underwent decompressive surgery for severe cerebral or cerebellar in

All episodes of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) caused by Staphylococcus aureus were prospectively analyzed for a 30-mo period. Methicillin-sensitive S. aureus (MSSA) was isolated in 38 episodes and methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) in 11 others. The two groups were similar regarding sex, severity of underlying diseases, prior surgery, and presence of renal failure, diabetes, cardiopathy, and coma. MRSA-infected persons were more likely to have received steroids before developing infection (relative risk [RR] = 3.45, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.38-8.59), to have been ventilated

A total of 636 episodes of peritonitis occurred in 440 patients who entered our continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) program from September 1977 to February 1988. Sixteen patients (8 male and 8 female, aged 37-77 years) died during an episode of peritonitis (fatality rate 2.5%). They had been on CAPD for 3 to 105 (average 39) months. Six of them were diabetics. The peritonitis rate among these 16 patients were 1 episode per 12 patient months, while the corresponding figure for the whole (440) CAPD population was 14 patient months. Risk factors present in the 16 patients were: cardi

Ventriculitis is a dreaded complication of central nervous system infections, which has been scarcely described in the literature. We aimed to present a contemporary picture of ventriculitis, describing its characteristics and outcomes across the spectrum of aetiologies that may lead to ventriculitis. VELCRO is an international retrospective multicentre cohort study conducted at 34 hospitals in six countries. Adult patients fulfilling the clinical, microbiological and imaging criteria for ventriculitis between 2010 and 2021 were included. Survival analyses were performed using a multivariable

BACKGROUND: Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is a significant type of stroke associated with high early mortality. While certain risk factors are known, detailed clinical profiles and predictors of death, especially in varied healthcare environments, require further investigation to guide treatment strategies.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to measure how common modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors are in ICH patients and to determine which clinical, biochemical, and radiological factors predict death using standard severity scales.
METHODS: An observational study enrolled 100 consecutive I

Death by neurologic criteria is an irreversible sequence of events culminating in permanent cessation of cerebral functions. In this context, there are no responses arising from the brain, no cranial nerve reflexes nor motor responses to pain stimuli, and no respiratory drive. The diagnosis of death by neurologic criteria implies that there is clinical evidence of the complete and irreversible cessation of brainstem and cerebral functions. The diagnosis, confirmation, and certification of death are core skills for medical practitioners. The aim of this review is to discuss the pathophysiology

Data from 191 post-mortem cases where post-mortem blood beta-hydroxybutyrate (βHB) and acetone concentrations and vitreous humor glucose concentrations (where available) had been measured were retrospectively investigated to determine the markers required to identify and distinguish between Alcoholic Ketoacidosis (AKA), Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) and Hyperosmolar Hyperglycemic State (HHS). Blood βHB concentrations above 250 μg/mL were considered significant and it was shown to be the preferred marker of ketoacidosis. All cases with significant βHB detected also had acetone present (greater th

BACKGROUND: Incidence of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is twice as high as in Western countries. Prognostic factors for predicting function outcome and mortality play a major role in determining the treatment outcome.
METHODS: A prospective study of male and female patients ≥12 years with primary nontraumatic intracranial hemorrhage were included. Hemorrhage caused by trauma, anticoagulant or thrombolytic drugs, brain tumor, saccular arterial aneurysm or vascular malformation were excluded. Functional outcome of patients was determined by modified Rankin's scale. Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) sco

Central pontine myelinolysis (CPM) is a neurologic disorder once thought to be uniformly fatal. With the introduction of CT and MRI there was an increasing number of reports on nonfatal cases of CPM. Nearly all reports on nonfatal cases describe severe clinical syndromes with tetraparesis, bulbar palsy, and coma. We reviewed nine patients with CPM and compared the size of the pontine lesion on MRI and CT with the severity of clinical presentation. Clinical presentation of CPM was highly variable: The symptoms ranged from severe neurologic disorders to mild neurologic disturbances only. Two of

Methanol poisoning is seen in the form of isolated episodes, or intentional ingestion and epidemics. Despite its efficient treatment, methanol poisoning has high morbidity and mortality rates. So far, several studies have been performed to identify the prognostic factors in methanol poisoning. Recently, during the treatment of patients with methanol poisoning, we observed that patients' blood glucose levels were high on presentation to the hospital, particularly in those who expired. Through a literature search, we found that no studies have been performed on blood glucose levels or hyperglyce
