Using the axon degeneration method by R. Fink and L. Heimer, organization of intrathalamic connections between various areas of the lateral hypothalamus have been studied after unisided electrolitic lesion. At any location of the injury foci, similar patterns are observed in ipsilateral distribution of degenerating fibers along the whole lateral preoptico-hypothalamic area. The most massive degeneration is observed in the zone where the medial forebrain bundle (MFB) fibers run. The degenerating fibers spread forward--into the septal area, and backward--into the mesencephalic part of the brain.

Preterm infants have a high rate of neurodevelopmental handicap. Recent imaging studies have revealed that adverse outcomes are strongly associated with reduced brain growth and neural complexity in later life. Increasing data suggest that these chronic deficits primarily reflect acute neuronal and glial injury sustained during adverse in utero events, such as exposure to severe hypoxia-ischemia and inflammation. In the present review we examine recent evidence that this chronic impairment is partly due to upregulation of physiological apoptosis, related to input deprivation, and output isolat

Traumatic brain injuries (TBI) are common in sports accidents. Helmets are generally known to provide protection to the head. However, the effectiveness of helmets in mitigating a TBI may be compromised due to the impact location and impact speed. Although it is known that the helmet decreases the linear head accelerations and the resulting head injury potential, to the best of our knowledge, limited research effort has been devoted to the study of the biomechanics of TBI in side impact conditions. The present work is designed to delineate the biomechanics of TBI in a fall impacting the pariet

OBJECTIVES: This study reports on a patient with mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) who showed severe and extensive traumatic axonal injury (TAI) of various neural tracts following minor and indirect head trauma, which was demonstrated by diffusion tensor tractography (DTT).
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 26-year-old female patient suffered from indirect head trauma resulting from flexion-hyperextension injury after being hit from behind by a slowly moving car. At the time of head trauma, she felt tingling sensation on her four extremities; however, she did not experience loss of consciousness. At 5-day

The search for effective strategies for peripheral nerve regeneration has attracted much attention in recent years. In this study, ordered collagen fibers were used as intraluminal fibers after nerve injury in rats. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) plays an important role in nerve regeneration, but its very fast initial burst of activity within a short time has largely limited its clinical use. For the stable binding of VEGF to ordered collagen fibers, we fused a collagen-binding domain (CBD) to VEGF through recombinant DNA technology. Then, we filled the ordered collagen fibers-CBD-V

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of our study was to show how, despite pathognomonic signs of cerebral involvement in chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia (CPEO), mitochondrial respiratory chain insufficiency is associated with increased lactate and reduced N-acetylaspartate. CPEO and mitochondrial myopathy are caused by mitochondrial DNA mutations leading to impaired oxidative phosphorylation. Cortical and subcortical metabolites, cerebral diffusivity, and structural MRI were assessed to characterize possible subclinical cerebral pathology in CPEO.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Ten patients with CPEO

Over 2.8 million traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) are reported in the United States annually, of which, over 75% are mild TBIs with diffuse axonal injury (DAI) as the primary pathology. TBI instigates a stress response that stimulates the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis concurrently with DAI in brain regions responsible for feedback regulation. While the incidence of affective symptoms is high in both men and women, presentation is more prevalent and severe in women. Few studies have longitudinally evaluated the etiology underlying late-onset affective symptoms after mild TBI and even…

Using the bullfrog (Rana catesbeiana) dorsal root ganglia (DRG) and its sciatic nerve (ScN) as a model system, we have previously described neuronal and non-neuronal molecular changes associated with the early regenerative response of DRG neurons to axotomy. Since diffusible molecular factors, released by axotomized ScN, might function to stimulate axon regrowth, we have assayed the ability of ScN-conditioned bath to promote in vitro neurite outgrowth from PC-12 cells. Diffusible ScN proteins were collected by incubating segments of normal or axotomized ScN in a small volume of RPMI media for

Headaches and pain-related symptoms are the most disabling somatic complaints following mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). In this study, we reviewed the existing literature examining structural differences in brain morphology and axonal connections, as well as functional differences in brain activity and connectivity associated with pain or post-traumatic headache (PTH) following mTBI. We searched MEDLINE®, Embase, PubMed, Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and Web of Science databases for: (1) TBI OR concussion

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Differences in structural brain connectivity that underlie inattention have been previously investigated in adolescents with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, but not in the context of premature birth, which is often associated with attentional problems. The purpose of this study was to identify the neural correlates of attentional problems in adolescents born prematurely and determine neonatal predictors of those neural correlates and attention problems.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 24 adolescents (12.5 ± 1.8 years of age; 12 girls, 12 boys) who w

The objective of this study was to understand the biomechanics in age-related primary traumatic brain injuries (TBI) causing initial severity and secondary progressive damage and to develop strategy reducing TBI outcome variability using biomechanical reconstruction to identify types of causal mechanisms prior to clinical trials of neuro-protective treatment. The methods included the explanation of TBI biomechanics and physiopathological mechanisms from dual perspectives of neurosurgery and biomechanical engineering. BACKGROUND: White matter hyperinxtensity (WMH) and normal-appearing white matter (NAWM) are critical markers for tracking disease progression in cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD), indicative of a spectrum of white matter injury. The core pathological alteration underlying such injury is the disruption of myelin integrity and loss of axons. We hypothesized that the myelin content in WMH and NAWM may exert distinct effects on brain networks and cognition in CSVD.
METHODS: A total of 129 diagnosed CSVD patients were retrospectively enrolled. Myelin content was assessed with sub-voxel precisio

The diffuse axonal damage in white matter and neuronal loss, along with excessive neuroinflammation, hinder long-term functional recovery after traumatic brain injury (TBI). MicroRNAs (miRs) are small noncoding RNAs that negatively regulate protein-coding target genes in a posttranscriptional manner. Recent studies have shown that loss of function of the miR-15a/16-1 cluster reduced neurovascular damage and improved functional recovery in ischemic stroke and vascular dementia. However, the role of the miR-15a/16-1 cluster in neurotrauma is poorly explored. Here, we report that genetic deletion

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is among the most common neurological presentations worldwide, yet its diagnosis remains largely clinical and its prognosis difficult to predict. Structural imaging is typically normal and self-reported symptom scales are insensitive and confounded by effort and comorbidity. Because the generation and control of eye movements recruit an unusually large and anatomically distributed proportion of the brain-from brainstem and cerebellar circuits to parietal, frontal and prefrontal cortices linked by long white-matter tracts-ocular-motor behaviour is sensitive to

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Isolated oculomotor nerve palsy (ONP) following mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) is rare and often presents diagnostic challenges. Typically associated with diffuse axonal injury and poor prognosis, ONP lacks comprehensive radiological documentation when no skull base fractures along the course of the 3rd Nerve or brainstem injuries are evident. This study explores the diagnostic utility of contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (CEMRI) in identifying ONP cases in mild TBI patients.

Sleep and circadian rhythms are among the most powerful but least understood contributors to cognitive performance and brain health. Here we capitalize on the circadian resetting effect of blue-wavelength light to phase shift the sleep patterns of adult patients (aged 18-48 years) recovering from mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), with the aim of facilitating recovery of brain structure, connectivity, and cognitive performance. During a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 32 adults with a recent mTBI, we compared 6-weeks of daily 30-min pulses of blue light (peak λ = 469 nm)
