Stress coping strategy in Japanese patients with eating disorders: relationship with bulimic and impulsive behaviors.

Although maladaptive coping strategies in eating disorder patients have been reported, the relationship between impulsivity and coping strategy has not previously been studied. Subjects consisted of 43 patients with anorexia nervosa restricting type (AN-R), 42 patients with anorexia nervosa binge eating/purging type (AN-BP), 71 patients with bulimia nervosa purging type (BN), and 97 controls. The Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations was used to evaluate coping strategies. Only AN-BP patients had a significantly lower task oriented-coping score than controls, and AN-R and BN patient groups

Impulsivity and dyscontrol in bulimia nervosa: is impulsivity an independent phenomenon or a marker of severity?

Fifty-eight normal-weight DSM-III-R bulimia nervosa patients were compared with 27 normal controls on measures of bulimia nervosa, depression, impulsivity, obsessionality and impulse control (dyscontrol) behaviours. Patients scored higher than controls on all these measures. Almost half the patient cohort met Lacey's multi-impulsive bulimia criteria. When bulimic symptoms were controlled for in an analysis of covariance, multi-impulsive bulimics did not score significantly differently to non-impulsive bulimics on psychometric measures of impulsivity, obsessionality and depression. The concept

Mental health problems in Austrian adolescents: a nationwide, two-stage epidemiological study applying DSM-5 criteria.

This is a nationwide epidemiological study using DSM-5 criteria to assess the prevalence of mental disorders in a large sample of Austrian adolescents between 10 and 18 years including hard-to-reach samples. A sample of 3615 adolescents from four cohorts (school grades 5, 7, 9, 11; age range 10-18 years) was recruited from 261 schools, samples of unemployed adolescents (n = 39) and adolescents from mental health institutions (n = 137) were added. The Youth Self-Report and SCOFF were used to screen for mental health problems. In a second phase, the Childrens' Diagnostic Interview for Mental Dis

Impulse control disorders in psychiatric inpatients.

The aim of this study was to examine the prevalence of impulse control disorders (ICDs) in a European psychiatric inpatient sample. Two hundred thirty four consecutive psychiatric inpatients (62% female) were examined using a module of the Structured Clinical Interview for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders fourth edition (DSM-IV) that has been developed for ICDs (SCID-ICD). In addition to intermittent explosive disorder, pyromania, kleptomania, pathological gambling, and trichotillomania, the proposed ICDs not otherwise specified were assessed, including compulsive buying,

Do changes in drinking motives mediate the relation between personality change and "maturing out" of problem drinking?

Recent research has indicated that developmental changes in the personality traits of neuroticism and impulsivity correlate with changes in problem drinking during emerging and young adulthood. However, it remains unclear what potential mechanisms, or mediators, could account for these associations. Drinking motives, particularly drinking to regulate negative affect (drinking to cope) and to get "high" or "drunk" (drinking for enhancement), have been posited to mediate the relationship between personality and drinking problems. Recent work indicates that changes in drinking motives parallel ch

Intermittent explosive disorder: development of integrated research criteria for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition.

This study was designed to develop a revised diagnostic criteria set for intermittent explosive disorder (IED) for consideration for inclusion in Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-V). This revised criteria set was developed by integrating previous research criteria with elements from the current DSM-IV set of diagnostic criteria. Evidence supporting the reliability and validity of IED-IR ("IED Integrated Criteria") in a new and well-characterized group of subjects with personality disorder is presented. Clinical, phenomenologic, and diagnostic data from

Short scales for measuring schizotypy.

BACKGROUND: This study reports short scales for measuring several dimensions of schizotypy in the normal population based on a large twin sample. METHODS: The four short scales use items drawn from a longer instrument, the Oxford-Liverpool Inventory of Feelings and Experiences. Using concordance estimates from MZ and DZ pairs, the items were selected both to have a high heritability and to offer broad coverage of each trait domain. RESULTS: Preliminary descriptive statistics are reported for the short scales and suggest adequate reliability. CONCLUSIONS: New scales offer a time efficient an

Disabling repetitive behaviors in Parkinson's disease.

We report on 6 patients with Parkinson's disease who developed severe repetitive behavior, 2 with pathological gambling and 4 with cleaning, rearranging, and ordering rituals. The onset of repetitive behaviors was not associated with changes in antiparkinsonian medications, the behavior did not improve after reductions in dopaminergic therapy, and thus they seem to be part of the underlying illness. The disabling cleaning/rearranging/ordering behaviors had associated features of hypomania, occurred exclusively during motor on periods, and often occurred nocturnally. The repetitive behavior res

The need to consume: Hoarding as a shared psychological feature of compulsive buying and binge eating.

INTRODUCTION: Compulsive buying and binge eating are two frequently co-occurring psychiatric conditions. Hoarding, which is the psychological need to excessively gather and store items, is frequently associated with both compulsive buying severity and binge eating severity. In the present study, we explored whether different dimensions of hoarding are a shared feature of compulsive buying and binge eating. METHOD: Participants consisted of 434 people seeking treatment for compulsive buying disorder. Registered psychiatrists confirmed the diagnosis of compulsive buying through semi-structured

An update of the impact of deep brain stimulation on non motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) is a well-established therapy for patients with Parkinson's disease (PD), especially those with advanced motor complications. The effect of STN DBS on non motor symptoms (NMS) of PD is less well studied. In this article, we review the pertinent literature on the impact of STN DBS on NMS when they co-exist with disabling motor symptoms in PD patients. We also present evidence that the number and the severity of most NMS decrease after STN DBS which can have a major impact on patients' quality of life.

What have positron emission tomography and 'Zippy' told us about the neuropharmacology of drug addiction?

Translational molecular imaging with positron emission tomography (PET) and allied technologies offer unrivalled applications in the discovery of biomarkers and aetiological mechanisms relevant to human disease. Foremost among clinical PET findings during the past two decades of addiction research is the seminal discovery of reduced dopamine D(2/3) receptor expression in the striatum of drug addicts, which could indicate a predisposing factor and/or compensatory reaction to the chronic abuse of stimulant drugs. In parallel, recent years have witnessed significant improvements in the performanc

Refining the diagnostic boundaries of compulsive hoarding: a critical review.

Like most human behaviors, saving and collecting possessions can range from totally normal and adaptive to excessive or pathological. Hoarding, or compulsive hoarding, are some of the more commonly used terms to refer to this excessive form of collectionism. Hoarding is highly prevalent and, when severe, it is associated with substantial functional disability and represents a great burden for the sufferers, their families, and society in general. It is generally considered difficult to treat. Hoarding can occur in the context of a variety of neurological and psychiatric conditions. Although it

Association between psychiatric symptoms and craving in methamphetamine users.

This study examined the differences in psychiatric symptoms between adult methamphetamine users (n = 46) and control subjects (n = 31), the relationship between psychiatric symptoms and the intensity of methamphetamine craving, and whether psychiatric symptoms were correlated to methamphetamine drug-usage variables (ie, length of abstinence, frequency, duration, and lifetime grams). We found that depressive symptoms on the Center for Epidemiology Studies-Depression (CES-D) and many other psychiatric symptoms on the Symptom Checklist-90 (SCL-90) significantly correlated with craving methampheta

Behavioral models of impulsivity in relation to ADHD: translation between clinical and preclinical studies.

Impulsivity, broadly defined as action without foresight, is a component of numerous psychiatric illnesses including attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), mania and substance abuse. In order to investigate the mechanisms underpinning impulsive behavior, the nature of impulsivity itself needs to be defined in operational terms that can be used as the basis for empirical investigation. Due to the range of behaviors that the term impulsivity describes, it has been suggested that impulsivity is not a unitary construct, but encompasses a variety of related phenomena that may differ in th

Aspirations, Expectations and Delinquency: The Moderating Effect of Impulse Control.

Although prior research finds a robust link between delinquent behavior and expectations, or an adolescent's perceived likelihood of obtaining one's future goals, fewer studies have evaluated aspirations, or the perceived importance of achieving one's goals. In addition, few studies consider how individual traits such as impulsivity affect the degree to which expectations and aspirations motivate or deter delinquent behavior. We contribute to this body of research by evaluating the independent effects of expectations and aspirations, and the aspiration-expectation gap (i.e., strain) on delinqu

Comparison of impulsive and premeditated perpetrators of intimate partner violence.

Violence occurs in four to five million intimate relationships each year in the United States. Past research has investigated the concept of batterer subtypes based on the nature of the violent behavior. To extend this research, the present study used the Impulsive/Premeditated Aggression Scale (IPAS) along with a battery of relevant self-report measures in a sample of men (N = 113) convicted of domestic violence and court ordered into an intervention program. Batterers whose violence was classified as premeditated scored higher on psychopathic traits and a measure of treatment rejection. Batt

EEG changes induced by dopamine replacement therapy in Parkinson's disease with impulse control disorders.

OBJECTIVES: Impulse control disorders (ICDs) are a common complication in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients undergoing dopaminergic therapy. Although neurophysiological markers of ICDs have been identified, the effect of dopaminergic therapy on these markers is not fully understood. This study investigates the effect of dopaminergic therapy on EEG oscillatory activity in PD patients with and without ICDs. METHODS: A total of 26 PD patients-14 with ICDs (PD + ICD) and 12 healthy controls (HC)-participated. EEG recordings were obtained during regular dopamine therapy (ON) and after overnight wi

Integrating genetic and clinical data to predict impulse control disorders in Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Impulse control disorders (ICDs) are frequent in Parkinson's disease (PD), with associated clinical and genetic risk factors. This study was aimed at analyzing the clinical features and the genetic background that underlie ICDs in PD. METHODS: We included 353 patients with PD in this study (58.9% men, mean age 62.4 ± 10.58 years, mean age at disease onset 52.71 ± 11.94 years). We used the validated Questionnaire for Impulsive-Compulsive Disorders in Parkinson's Disease for ICDs screening. Motor, nonmotor, and treatment-related features were evaluated according to the p
