Diving behaviour of southern elephant seals: new models of behavioural and ecophysiological adjustments of oxygen store management.

Among pinnipeds, southern elephant seals (SESs, Mirounga leonina) are extreme divers that dive deeply and continuously along foraging trips to restore their body stores after fasting on land during breeding or moulting. Their replenishment of body stores influences their energy expenditure during dives and their oxygen (O2) reserves (via muscular mass), yet how they manage their O2 stores during their dives is not fully understood. In this study, 63 female SESs from Kerguelen Island were equipped with accelerometers and time-depth recorders to investigate changes in diving parameters through t…

At-sea distribution patterns of the Peruvian diving petrel Pelecanoides garnotii during breeding and non-breeding seasons.

At-sea distributions of seabird species are strongly associated with the distribution patterns of their prey, which are influenced by physical oceanic features. During breeding and non-breeding seasons, seabirds move extraordinary distances among different environments. However, foraging site fidelity by seabirds appears to be high in areas of known high productivity, such as frontal zones and upwellings. Here, we present a tracking study for the Peruvian diving-petrel Pelecanoides garnotii, an endemic seabird of the highly productive Humboldt Current System, to assess whether adults use the s…

Selecting optimal air diving gradient factors for Belgian military divers: more conservative settings are not necessarily safer.

INTRODUCTION: In 2018, the Belgian Defence introduced a commercial off-the-shelf dive computer (Shearwater Perdix™) for use by its military divers. There were operational constraints when using its default gradient factors (GF). We aimed to provide guidelines for optimal GF selection. METHODS: The Defence and Civil Institute of Environmental Medicine (DCIEM) dive tables and the United States Navy (USN) air decompression tables are considered acceptably safe by the Belgian Navy Diving Unit. The decompression model used in the Shearwater Perdix (Bühlmann ZH-L16C algorithm with GF) was programme…

Uncovering loggerhead (Caretta caretta) navigation strategy in the open ocean through the consideration of their diving behaviour.

While scientists have been monitoring the movements and diving behaviour of sea turtles using Argos platform terminal transmitters for decades, the precise navigational mechanisms used by these animals remain an open question. Until now, active swimming motion has been derived from total motion by subtracting surface or subsurface modelled ocean currents, following the approximation of a quasi-two-dimensional surface layer migration. This study, based on tracking and diving data collected from 25 late-juvenile loggerhead turtles released from Reunion Island during their pre-reproductive migrat…

Fatal diving accidents in Genoa (North-West Italy) from 1968 to 2021: Forensic approach and literature review.

Scuba diving is one of the most common and practised water sport activities in Genoa, especially in the more recent years. Although scuba diving is generally considered a safe activity, this does not exclude the possibility of serious or fatal accidents from happening. This retrospective study investigates the case history of deaths resulting from diving accidents recorded by the Municipal Morgue of Genoa over a period of 53 years, specifically from 1968 to 2021. Of the total 52 deaths covered by the study, 48 were male with an age range of 16-71 years. In 25 of these subjects, pre-existing pa…

Influence of repetitive diving in freshwater on pressure equalization and Eustachian tube function in recreational scuba divers.

INTRODUCTION: We investigated the effect of repetitive pressure exposure during freshwater dives on Eustachian tube function and the middle ear, assessed by the Eustachian tube function test (ETFT). METHODS: This prospective observational cohort study included 23 divers over three consecutive days of diving in freshwater lakes in Nordhausen, Germany. Participants underwent otoscopy and ETFT before the first dive, between each dive and after the last dive. ETFT included regular tympanometry (R-tymp), tympanometry after Valsalva (V-tymp) and after swallowing (S-tymp). The peak pressure differen…

Alternobaric vertigo and facial baroparesis caused by scuba diving and relieved by chewing pineapple: a case report.

Equalization of middle ear pressure is an important consideration for scuba divers. When middle ear pressure is asymmetric, a diver may experience alternobaric vertigo. Moreover, individuals with an underlying temporal bone dehiscence are predisposed to facial baroparesis. An understanding on behalf of fellow divers and emergency responders to recognize and differentiate facial baroparesis from decompression illness is critical. Misdiagnosis may lead to inappropriate treatment or unwarranted stoppage of diving. There have been a few dozen reported cases of facial baroparesis in the literature,…

Scuba diving, patent foramen ovale and heart rhythm disturbances: The role of underwater Holter monitoring-Case report.

Patent foramen ovale (PFO) is thought to be a risk factor for decompression illness (DCI). Catheter-based closure procedure reduces the risk of DCI in selected scuba divers with PFO. Major complication of invasive approach are rare, minor, especially heart rhythm disturbances are reported relatively often. We describe a case of 41-year-old diver, who underwent PFO closure due to recurrent DCI events. Afterward, he experienced no DCI symptoms; however, he complained about feeling of the heart beating during a submersion. Arrhythmia should be considered as a life-threatening for scuba diver, thu

Adherence to Red Reflex and Vision Screening Recommendations: A Deep Dive into Primary Care Implementation Gaps.

INTRODUCTION: Early childhood vision screening is critical for detecting amblyopia and other vision-threatening conditions. Despite screening recommendations during well-child visits, rates remain low. Red reflex assessment is recommended to identify serious ocular pathology, yet its use in primary care is not well described. We examined rates and drivers of vision screening in pediatric primary care. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of electronic health records for children 3-5 years attending well-child visits in 2022 in one of three representative primary care clinics within a

A five-year dive in the realm of crystal engineering with water-soluble vitamins in addressing biopharmaceutical bottlenecks.

Crystal engineering through co-crystallisation offers a robust strategy for modulating the physicochemical properties and bioavailability of poorly soluble active pharmaceutical ingredients. A thoughtful selection of GRAS status co-formers is critical, as their molecular interactions govern the stability and solubility behaviour of the resulting solid-state architecture. Recently, the integration of nutraceuticals as co-formers has emerged as a promising, safe, and cost-effective approach within crystal engineering. Factors such as the type of functional group for hydrogen bonding, pKa, physic

Deep dive into drug substance HCP patterns for comprehensive safety assessment in recombinant mAb formats.

The presence of host cell proteins (HCPs) as process-related impurities in monoclonal antibody (mAb) therapeutics presents risks, including immunogenicity, product instability, and reduced therapeutic efficacy. Therefore, HCP levels are seen as a critical quality attribute which requires monitoring. Characterization of residual HCPs is essential during process development and after process changes in late project phases including post-submission changes. Mass spectrometry-based analysis of HCPs is increasingly employed to overcome the limitations of ELISAs, particularly in identifying individu

A deep dive into statistical modeling of RNA splicing QTLs reveals variants that explain neurodegenerative disease.

Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) have identified thousands of putative disease-causing variants with unknown regulatory effects. Efforts to connect these variants with splicing quantitative trait loci (sQTLs) have provided functional insights, yet sQTLs reported by existing methods cannot explain many GWAS signals. We show that current sQTL modeling approaches can be improved by considering alternative splicing representation, model calibration, and covariate integration. We then introduce MAJIQTL, a pipeline for sQTL discovery. MAJIQTL includes two statistical methods: a weighted multi

Gliomas Uncovered: A Deep Dive Into Immunohistochemical and Molecular Features From a Tertiary Care Facility Perspective.

Introduction Central nervous system (CNS) tumors constitute a heterogeneous group of tumors comprising both benign and malignant populations. Central nervous system tumors carry substantial morbidity and mortality owing to their close anatomical relationship with vital neural structures. Although the exact etiology of CNS malignancies is not fully understood, several factors have been linked to an increased risk, such as genetic predisposition, previous exposure to ionizing radiation, and psychosocial stress. The tremendous increase in knowledge of the molecular markers for all CNS tumors duri

Observations on the Frequency of Sightings of White Sharks in the Population of Gansbaai, South Africa, in the Presence of Cage Diving.

Shark ecotourism is an ever-expanding reality, with hundreds of thousands of tourists involved annually. Although it represents a fundamental tool for sharing the urgent need to safeguard sharks with the public, the implications for the health and well-being of sharks must be taken into due consideration. In South Africa, cage-diving has been an important form of ecotourism since the 1990s. In Gansbaai, over a 14-year period from 2009 to 2024, excluding the 2020-2021 pandemic years, data was collected from cage diving operators' boats on the frequency of sightings of white sharks. After approx…

Wearable Technology in Diving: A Review of Heart Rate and Oxygen Saturation Monitoring for Enhanced Safety and Performance.

Monitoring heart rate (HR) and peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2) in underwater environments has gained increasing importance due to the expanding popularity of diving activities such as SCUBA diving, freediving, and professional underwater operations. These physiological parameters are critical indicators for detecting adaptive responses and early signs of physiological distress caused by environmental stressors like elevated ambient pressure, hypoxia, cold temperatures, and psychological stress. Although recent advances in wearable sensor technologies offer new opportunities for real-time p…

Behavioural variability and repeatability in adult zebrafish (Danio rerio) using the novel tank dive test.

Zebrafish (Danio rerio) are widely used in behavioural neuroscience as a model for studying anxiety-like and stress-related behaviours. However, substantial variability exists within and among individuals, influenced by factors such as sex, age, and environmental conditions, making the interpretation of anxiety-related behaviours challenging. Here we characterized longitudinal patterns of stability and variability in anxiety-like behaviours across individual adult zebrafish and assessed whether distinct behavioural profiles emerged over time. Using the novel tank dive test, we tracked anxiety-
