Risk assessment of trihalomethanes in drinking water with seasonal variation considerations.

This study evaluated the concentrations of trihalomethanes (THMs) in Alexandria’s drinking water across seven districts during summer and winter, and assessed the associated cancer risks. THMs, byproducts of water chlorination, are known for their potential carcinogenicity. A total of 35 drinking water samples were analyzed using gas chromatography with an electron capture detector (GC-ECD) to determine the concentrations of chloroform (CF), bromodichloromethane (BDCM), dibromochloromethane (DBCM), and bromoform (BF). The results revealed significant seasonal variations. Region-2 recorded the …

Stagnant plumbing: Drinking water quality responses to stagnation in controlled systems.

Despite the high frequency of extended building closures from vacations, property sales, or building closures, relatively little is known ab … ficient to prevent the growth of bacteria such as potential sulfate-reducing bacteria and potential drinking water pathogens, specifically Mycobacterium spp. While daily use controlled microbial growth, the pipes had elevated copper levels, potentially attributed to a lack of scale formation in the newly constructed plumbing system. These results underscor …

Cued unpredictable intermittent access exacerbates loss of control over ethanol drinking.

BACKGROUND: Loss of control over drinking is a hallmark feature of alcohol use disorder (AUD) that is modeled preclinically through escalation of ethanol consumption and aversion-resistant drinking. Prior work with other reinforcers suggests that within-session unpredictable, intermittent access (uIntA) promotes these phenotypes. However, the effect of uIntA on voluntary ethanol consumption is unknown. METHODS: Male and female Long-Evans rats (n = 9-10/group) underwent seven weeks of daily voluntary ethanol (20% v/v) drinking sessions under either a continuous access (ContA) or uIntA schedule…

Sexual Racism and Queer Asian American Men's Depression and Hazardous Drinking.

While research suggests that sexual racism is prevalent within the gay community, studies have neglected to examine how this specific manifestation of racism influences queer Asian American men's mental health. Queer Asian American men's health outcomes are often overlooked as racism-related studies tend to homogenize queer Asian American men with queer men of color broadly. Thus, the present study examined the association between sexual racism and queer Asian American men's depressive symptomatology and hazardous drinking, as well as the moderating role of collective racial self-esteem. The f…

Chlorination-induced spread of antibiotic resistance genes in drinking water systems.

Chlorine, the most widely utilized disinfectant for drinking water globally, has recently been implicated in facilitating the spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), raising concerns about its underestimated environmental and ecological risks. However, given the current fragmented research focus and results, a comprehensive understanding of the potential mechanisms and influencing factors behind chlorination-promoted ARGs transmission in drinking water systems is crucial. This work is the first to systematically review the variations in abundance, transmission mechanisms, influencing fac…

The Drinking Dashboard for alcohol-induced blackout: A randomized pilot trial.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol-induced "blackouts," or memory loss for events that occur while drinking, are prevalent and problematic among young adults. They also increase motivation to change. This study developed and pilot-tested a theoretically informed digital health intervention ("Drinking Обзор") for alcohol-induced blackouts. METHODS: Data were collected using qualitative (Study 1) and quantitative (Study 2) methods. Participants in both studies were young adults (ages 18-30 years) across the United States who reported alcohol-induced blackout(s) in the past month. Study 1 participants (N =…

Social Influence and Problematic Drinking: Insights from the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Patterns of alcohol consumption can spread from one person to the next in social networks. Yet the necessary conditions required for this social influence to occur are not clearly defined. Here we leverage the sudden and seismic shift in social life following COVID-19, a natural phenomenon that divorced social relationships from the contexts those relationships typically inhabit. Using a social network-based clustered longitudinal design, we examined alcohol use patterns among cohorts of heavy drinking friendship dyads and triads (N=314) traced longitudinally pre- and post-pandemic. In line wi…

A bottom-up septal inhibitory circuit mediates anticipatory control of drinking.

Drinking behavior is not only homeostatically regulated but also rapidly adjusted before any changes in blood osmolality occur, known as anticipatory thirst satiation. Homeostatic and anticipatory signals converge in the subfornical organ (SFO); however, the neural pathways conveying peripheral information to the SFO before changes in blood composition are incompletely understood. Here we reveal an inhibitory pathway from the medial septum (MS) to the SFO that is involved in the control of anticipatory drinking behavior in mice. MS γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA)ergic neurons encode water-satiation…

Traumatic stress-enhanced alcohol drinking: Sex differences and animal model perspectives.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Stress is associated with alcohol drinking, and epidemiological studies document the comorbidity of alcohol use disorder (AUD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), with higher comorbid prevalence in females than in males. The aim of this paper is to highlight information related to sex differences in stress-enhanced alcohol drinking from clinical studies and from preclinical studies utilizing an animal model of traumatic stress. RECENT FINDINGS: Stress is associated with alcohol drinking and relapse in males and females, but there are sex differences in the alcohol-re…

Development and Validation of the Maternal Drinking Motives Scale (M-DMS).

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use is a gendered behavior and motherhood is a life stage which may influence drinking motives. However, there are no drinking motive scales uniquely tailored to maternal populations. This work developed a new maternal drinking motives scale (M-DMS) and determined associations between the M-DMS and alcohol-related behavior. METHODS: An online observational survey (n = 534) and online test-retest survey (n = 164) were conducted with adult, UK mothers. From the observational study, data on drinking motives was extracted to determine M-DMS items and factor loading. This was s…

Mouse parasubthalamic Crh neurons drive alcohol drinking escalation and behavioral disinhibition.

Corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF, encoded by Crh) signaling is thought to play a critical role in the development of excessive alcohol drinking and the emotional and physical pain associated with alcohol withdrawal. Here, we investigated the parasubthalamic nucleus (PSTN) as a potential source of CRF relevant to the control of alcohol consumption, affect, and nociception in mice. We identified PSTN Crh neurons as a neuronal subpopulation that exerts a potent and unique influence on behavior by promoting not only alcohol but also saccharin drinking, while PSTN neurons are otherwise known to …

Social decision making in binge drinking: An exploration through moral dilemmas.

OBJECTIVE: The continuum hypothesis proposes that binge drinking and severe alcohol use disorder (SAUD) share qualitatively similar cognitive and emotional impairments. In SAUD, these deficits have a demonstrated impact on social decision making, resulting in a utilitarian bias. Namely, when confronted with moral dilemmas, patients with SAUD tend to focus on the consequences of their actions rather than on social norms. However, social decision-making abilities remain unexplored in binge drinking. We offered the first insights on the generalization of the continuum hypothesis to social decisio…

Ayahuasca drinking using a two-bottle choice procedure in male mice.

Ayahuasca has been proposed as a treatment for substance use disorders. However, because of its hallucinogenic properties, studies investigating its abuse potential are needed. The aim of the present study was to investigate voluntary ayahuasca drinking in male mice using a two-bottle choice procedure. Male mice were exposed to two bottles, one of water and one of ayahuasca (0.01, 0.03 or 0.1 mg/ml), for 15 h/day, under 3 protocols (acquisition): (1) every other day access; (2) access every 3 days; (3) access every 5 days. Animals were then submitted to a 14-day drug-free period, followed by 3…

A latent profile analysis of blackout drinking behavior among young adults.

BACKGROUND: Blackout drinking, or alcohol-induced memory loss during a drinking occasion, is associated with additional negative alcohol-related outcomes. Brief motivational interventions targeting higher-risk alcohol use behavior have largely ignored blackout drinking. Including personalized information on blackout drinking could maximize intervention impact. To move toward incorporating content on blackout drinking in prevention and intervention materials, it is imperative to understand individual-level differences in blackout drinking. The current study aimed to identify latent profiles of …
