Positive identification by post-surgical defects from unilateral lambdoid synostectomy: a case report.

The comparison of pre- and postmortem radiographs as a method of identification of unknown human remains is well established in the forensic and radiologic literature. Identification can be based on a single bony feature when there is evidence of prior surgery, trauma or unusual anatomic variation. We present a case in which a positive identification was made using bony changes in the skull secondary to prior surgery for correction of unilateral lambdoid craniosynostosis. The unusual radiographic appearance of the bony defect initially raised the question of trauma and foul play.

Causes of fatalities in motor vehicle occupants: an overview.

Injuries from motor vehicle collisions are frequently encountered in routine forensic practice. While the most common lethal events involve blunt force trauma with injuries to the head and neck, chest, abdomen, pelvis and limbs, review of the literature and case files shows that a wide variety of other fatal situations can occur that may involve sharp force and penetrating trauma, incineration, drowning, asphyxia, organic diseases and combinations of these. The following overview details potential factors that may contribute to death following vehicle crashes.

Injuries sustained from high-velocity impact with water after jumps from high bridges. A preliminary report of 10 cases.

Autopsy findings in 10 cases of high-velocity impact with water--all suicides--are demonstrated. The injuries vary from no lesion at all to severe injuries, the fatal injuries predominately located to the thorax and the spine. All but one victim fell 35-37 meters; the last one fell 51 meters. The cause of death was drowning in six cases; in four cases, injuries were responsible for the fatal outcome. Head and neck injuries of any importance were not observed in the present investigation.

The 'canine rescue' phenomenon.

While deaths caused by interactions with dogs in medico-legal situations most often involve trauma from attacks, in certain circumstances, deaths may occur from sharing environmental hazards that the animal has been exposed to during attempted rescues. Search of the Forensic Science South Australia (FSSA), Australia, autopsy database over a 16-year period from 2004 to 2020 found three such cases, including two women aged 46 and 61 years who were both killed in separate incidents after being struck by vehicles when they attempted to rescue dogs that had strayed onto busy roads. The final case w

Clustering suicides: A data-driven, exploratory machine learning approach.

Methods of suicide have received considerable attention in suicide research. The common approach to differentiate methods of suicide is the … male subsample. Violent suicides could be further divided into sub-clusters: hanging, shooting, and drowning on the one hand and jumping on the other hand. In the female sample, two different clusters were revealed - hanging and drowning on the one hand and jumping, poisoning, and shooting on the other. Our data-driven results in this large epidemiological …

Understanding alcohol use around water: A qualitative analysis of the experiences of young males.

OBJECTIVES: Alcohol is a significant risk factor for drowning, with young males disproportionately impacted. We explored salient social cognition beliefs that influence young Australian males' consumption of alcohol around water. DESIGN: Via purposive sampling, 23 Australian males aged 18-30 years who had previously consumed alcohol around water were recruited. A brief online survey gathered demographics, eligibility criteria and swimming ability, followed by a qualitative interview via telephone. An interview guide based on established methods for exploring social cognition factors gathered …

Effectiveness of a 5-day adapted swim instruction program for children with disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Drowning is a leading cause of death for children. Some populations of children with disabilities, such as children with autism, experience a health disparity in drowning when compared to peers without disabilities. OBJECTIVE: This study presents a secondary data analysis of the response to intervention for a 5-day adapted swim instruction program (iCan Swim) for children with disabilities (n = 164 participants) ages 3-18 years. METHODS: This secondary data analysis assessed the effectiveness of the swim intervention on changes in swim skill level from Day 1 to Day 5. Association…

Caregiver water safety knowledge and views of toddler water competency.

BACKGROUND: Drowning is the leading cause of death for toddlers. When caregivers are knowledgeable about water safety, they can provide the best protection against drowning. The aim of this study is to survey caregivers of toddlers to better understand factors associated with water safety knowledge, attitudes about pool supervision, and toddler water competency skills. METHODS: An online survey of 650 parents/caregivers of 1-4-year-old toddlers asked about the caregiver's water safety and swimming background and views on pool supervision. Surveys included a true/false section of ten basic wat…
