To determine the significance of manometric pressure of the pancreatic duct, we used a microtransducer inserted through a duodenoscope to measure pressures in the papillary sphincter zone and pancreatic main duct in 20 control subjects and 20 patients with chronic pancreatitis, and recorded the effect of exogenous glucagon or secretin. In a prospective study, 355 healthy, asymptomatic, male volunteers, 18 to 45 years of age, were screened by esophagogastroduodenoscopy before admission to clinical trials. One hundred thirty-four volunteers (38%) showed abnormal endoscopic findings. Some volunteers had more than one site of involvement or more than one grade of lesion in each anatomic location. In 80 patients with duodenal ulcer, the effects of various factors--symptoms, endoscopic findings, and peak acid output (PAO)--on the healing rate were studied during eight weeks of outpatient therapy with low-dose antacid (neutralising capacity less than 50 mmol HCl/d).
