Tricuspid valve malformation is a rare congenital heart disease. Prenatal diagnosis of Ebstein's anomaly (EA) and tricuspid valve dysplasia (TVD) is associated with high mortality. There are conflicting reports concerning accurate prognostication after diagnosis in utero. The aim of our study was to assess prognostic factors based on our experience. We reviewed 37 fetuses between 1984 and June 2010 comprising 26 cases of EA and 11 cases of TVD. There were 10 terminations, 5 intrauterine deaths, 8 neonatal deaths, and 14 survivors. We found that the major prognostic factor for outcome was the f

The association of Ebstein's anomaly of tricuspid valve with rheumatic mitral stenosis is extremely rare. The case is presented of a young female who had been admitted with progressive dyspnea secondary to severe rheumatic mitral stenosis with moderate pulmonary hypertension, along with Ebstein's anomaly of tricuspid valve. The patient underwent successful balloon mitral valvotomy, using the Inoue technique, with a marked improvement in her symptoms.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: The development of ablation techniques for supraventricular arrhythmias in patients with Ebstein's anomaly have led to a need for better understanding of the morphology of the triangle of Koch and the position of the atrioventricular (AV) node in this structure.
METHODS: The study involved 17 human hearts: 11 with Ebstein's anomaly (age range: 37 weeks' gestation to 1 week after birth) and 6 structurally normal hearts (age range: 35 weeks' gestation to 2 days after birth). The area of the triangle of Koch was calculated and the length of the AV node and the bundle

OBJECTIVES: Ebstein's anomaly, characterized by an apical displacement of the tricuspid valve into the right ventricle, occurs in approximately 1/200,000 live births. Because long-term follow-up data of adults with Ebstein's anomaly are scarce, we evaluated the outcome of our Ebstein's anomaly patients.
METHODS: All patients >16 years and registered in the congenital heart disease database of our hospital with isolated Ebstein's anomaly were selected for the study. Records were reviewed for outcome.
RESULTS: Forty-nine patients (21 males, mean age at diagnosis 29.1 ± 20.7 years) were followe

Catheter ablation with the use of radiofrequency energy has been used as a treatment for atrioventricular reciprocating tachycardia in patients with Ebstein's anomaly. However, the success rate in these patients is generally low. We experienced a case in which the decision regarding precise accessory pathway (AP) localization was impaired by the presence of an abnormal electrogram in the atrialized right ventricle (ARV) in a patient with Ebstein's anomaly. After the AP conduction was abolished, the abnormal electrogram was observed behind the ventricular wave in the ARV during sinus rhythm. Fu

BACKGROUND: Favorable outcomes in Ebstein's anomaly are predicated on tricuspid valve competence and right ventricular function. Successful valve repair should be aggressively pursued to avoid the morbidity of prosthetic tricuspid valve replacement. We report our experience with valve-sparing intracardiac repair, emphasizing novel concepts and techniques of valve repair supplemented by selective bidirectional Glenn (BDG).
METHODS: Between June 1993 and December 2008, 57 nonneonatal patients underwent Ebstein's anomaly repairs. The median age at operation was 8.1 years. All were symptomatic in

The diagnosis of Ebstein's anomaly is usually based on echocardiographic findings; however, cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) can add useful information enabling a detailed visualization of cardiac abnormality, as well as a method of accurate physiological evaluation. CMR, in conjunction with echocardiography, offers a comprehensive non-invasive evaluation either for surgical management or ongoing follow-up of these patients.

Mitral valve abnormalities have been described in Ebstein's anomaly, but acquired rheumatic mitral valve disease is an extremely rare association. We describe a classical case of Ebstein's anomaly of tricuspid valve with severe rheumatic mitral stenosis. This patient had mild mitral regurgitation, pulmonary hypertension and atrial fibrillation.

A critically ill 3-day-old neonate with severe tricuspid valve Ebstein's anomaly, functional pulmonary atresia, and closed ductus arteriosus, unresponsive to prostaglandin infusion, underwent percutaneous ductal recanalization and stenting as an alternative to a surgical shunt. After local prostaglandin infusion through an end-hole catheter, the ductus was passed using a hydrophilic, high-support coronary guidewire. It was then stabilized by coronary stent implantation, after which the arterial oxygen saturation showed a sudden rise. In conclusion, ductus arteriosus recanalization and stenting

Ebstein's anomaly is a rare congenital heart defect (CHD) that occurs approximately once in 20,000 live births and is characterized by significant apical displacement of septal tricuspid leaflet. An increased risk of CHDs, about 40-50%, has been reported among children with Down syndrome. However, an association of Down syndrome with Ebstein's malformation is extremely unusual. Only four cases, to the best of our knowledge, have been previously reported. Tandem translocation 21;21 is rare in Down syndrome in comparison to Robertsonian translocations. A Down infant having a tandem 21;21 translo

We present a case of a patient with a severe form of Ebstein's anomaly diagnosed in a 36th week of gestation through prenatal echocardiographic evaluation. The emergency surgery consisted of closure of the tricuspid valve and creation of a residual atriventricular communication, enlargement of interatrial communication, closure of the pulmonary artery, and construction of an aortopulmonary shunt. Subsequently, the patient underwent the hemiFontan and Fontan operation. We conclude that prenatal echocardiographic diagnosis is crucial for the survival of children with a severe form of Ebstein's a

BACKGROUND: Tricuspid valve supra-annular implantation (TVSI) has been performed for adult patients with Ebstein's anomaly at our hospital for several decades. TVSI is characterized by reliable reduction of tricuspid annulus size without affecting the conduction system; by prevention of residual tricuspid regurgitation (RTR) through preservation of the native tricuspid valve; and by implantation of the bioprosthesis at a supra-annular site.
METHODS: Ten adult patients with Ebstein's anomaly underwent TVSI. The right ventricular diameter and residual tricuspid regurgitation were evaluated by e

An 8-year-old girl who weighed 42 kg presented Ebstein's anomaly with severe tricuspid incompetence, and mild systemic cyanosis during exercise. A new reconstructive procedure for this complex anomaly was used. Oblique transference of the displaced posterior leaflet was performed, which resulted in plication of the atrialized ventricle and reduction in the tricuspid annular diameter. This procedure requires neither detachment nor closure of the tricuspid valve.

BACKGROUND: Ebstein's anomaly, due to failure of delamination of one or more leaflets of the tricuspid valve (TV), is associated with varying degrees of tricuspid regurgitation (TR) and dysplasia of the right ventricle (RV). Although refinement of tricuspid valvuloplasty and plication techniques have opened the way to a satisfactory outlook for the majority of older children and adults, Ebstein's anomaly presenting at neonatal age, secondary to ineffective forward flow into the pulmonary and systemic circulation, has a reported mortality rate of as high as 75%. In order to improve the dismal o

Ebstein's anomaly is a malformation of the tricuspid valve characterized from the clinical view point by dysnea, evolutive cyanosis and fatigue. Is it characterized anatomically by a downward displacement of the tricuspid valve into the right ventricle due to anomalous attachment of the tricuspid leaflets. Because of the abnormally situated tricuspid orifice, a portion of the right ventricle lies between the atrioventricular ring and the origin of the valve, that is, an "atrialized" segment of the ventricle, and they have a functionally small ventricular chamber.
