Brachial artery transection associated with closed and open dislocation of the elbow.

Acute dislocations of the elbow complicated by brachial artery involvement are rare but serious injuries. Rapid assessment and a high index of suspicion are essential to facilitate prompt treatment, as delay in diagnosis is associated with a poorer outcome. We present two cases of brachial artery transection after closed and open dislocation of the elbow, and discuss the appropriate management of such patients.

MR imaging of ligamentous abnormalities of the elbow.

With high-resolution MR imaging, the collateral ligament of the elbow can be directly evaluated; thus ligamentous injuries can be detected, localized, and graded. The functional anatomy of the ligaments of the elbow is reviewed. The normal appearance of the ligaments on MR images as well as the clinical and MR imaging findings of medial and lateral collateral ligament injury are presented.

Effect of elbow carrying angle on lateral epicondylitis development.

Lateral epicondylitis is one of the most common elbow joint injuries and elbow anatomy is a risk factor. Our study aims to evaluate whether the elbow carrying angle affects the development of lateral epicondylitis by considering sex differences. Elbow radiographs of 211 people (aged 18-65 years) diagnosed with lateral epicondylitis and having anteroposterior radiographs of the elbow taken in the appropriate position in the imaging archive of our hospital between January 1, 2021 and January 1, 2022 were retrospectively analyzed. The control group comprised elbow radiographs of 113 people in the

Fracture patterns, outcomes, and complications of terrible triad injury in elderly patients.

HYPOTHESIS: This study hypothesized that patients older than 65 years with terrible triad elbow injuries (TTEI) exhibit complex fracture patterns, a high prevalence of associated injuries, and increased rates of complications and reinterventions. METHODS: A retrospective study of 29 patients, mean follow-up of 48.7 ± 4.6 months (range 65-78). Fractures were classified according to the Mason and Regan-Morrey classifications. All patients were evaluated by the Mayo Elbow Performance Scale, Quick-Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand, Quality of life Visual Analog Scale, EQ5D scores, and r…

Posterolateral elbow impingement in professional boxers.

BACKGROUND: Elbow injury is common in boxing, but it has not been reported in the literature. The onset is often a hyperextension trauma caused by a missed hit. Clinically the boxers complain of pain, stiffness, and an extension deficit. PURPOSE: To evaluate the pathogenesis, diagnostic approach, and arthroscopic treatment of elbow injury in boxers, and to compare these with other sports-related elbow injuries. STUDY DESIGN: Case series; Level of evidence, 4. METHODS: Between 2003 and 2005, a group of 5 professional boxers received a diagnosis of posterior elbow impingement. An arthroscopic…

Percutaneous ultrasound-guided elbow flexor tenotomy: Cadaveric feasibility, learning curve, and procedure in two patients with spastic contracture.

BACKGROUND: Spasticity is a common complication of central neurological disorders. It is observed in almost 25% of patients, depending on the initial neurologic injury. It can affect various anatomical regions of the human body, particularly the upper limb, progressing toward musculotendinous retraction. Therapeutic option may include tenotomy of the main elbow flexor muscles among which are the Biceps Brachii, Brachialis, and Brachioradialis. Currently, this procedure is performed through an open approach, requiring extreme caution due to the risk of vascular and nerve injury. In parallel, th

Pediatric elbow arthroscopy: clinical outcomes and complications after long-term follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Elbow arthroscopy is becoming increasingly important for the treatment of a wide range of acute and chronic elbow pathologies. Even if elbow arthroscopy is technically demanding, in the pediatric population this minimally invasive technique is preferred by many surgeons for the treatment of pathologies such as osteochondritis dissecans (OCD), posttraumatic stiffness (PTS), or elbow posterior impingement (PI). The aim of this study is to evaluate outcomes and safety of elbow arthroscopy in the pediatric and adolescent population after long-term follow-up. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In

Salvage of elbow function in chronic complex elbow fracture dislocation with total elbow arthroplasty: a case report.

In patients with an elbow fracture dislocation the incidence of radial head fracture is 36%, where as coronoid process fractures occur in 13%, and olecranon fractures in 4% of patients. Combination of all these fractures with a 'terrible triad' is rarely reported in the literature. We describe a 40 year old lady involved in a polytrauma who had head injury, pnuemothorax and an open fracture dislocation of the left elbow. The Injury Severity Score initially on admission was 44. She presented with chronic elbow instability with pain 1 year later. A semi constrained total elbow arthroplasty (TEA)

Sports injuries in adolescents.

Musculoskeletal injuries are the most common injuries in youth sports. A number of growth-related factors unique to the adolescent age group play an important role in the epidemiology, types, and management of these injuries. These mainly relate to the physical and psychosocial growth and development during adolescence and are discussed in this article. Overuse injuries are more commonly seen in this age group in the primary care setting. Shoulder impingement, elbow and shoulder injuries related to throwing, stress injuries of the wrist, spondylolysis, and anterior knee pain are some of the ov

Common upper-extremity injuries.

In the daily practice of family medicine, injuries to the upper extremity are frequently encountered. Most of these injuries can by easily treated by the primary care physician who has an understanding of the joint anatomy and treatment principles. Some injuries, however, may appear relatively minor, yet require prompt referral for surgical care. We reviewed the pathoanatomy, historical and physical examination findings, and treatment of the more common injuries to the hand, wrist, elbow, and shoulder.

[Nerve lesions following injuries of the upper limbs in childhood (author's transl)].

A total of 93 cases of nerve lesions in the limbs in children is reported. After blunt trauma (n = 53), there was most often damage to the ulnar nerve (n = 28), especially in the area of the elbow joint, followed by the radial nerve (n = 14) and the median nerve (n = 11). Causes were primary pressure and scar compression following fractures of the elbow and forearm, where ventral re-siting and/or neurolysis were necessary in serious denervation processes. Among the cutting injuries (n = 40), the lesions in the area of the underside of the wrist severing the ulnar and median nerves, more rarely

Baseball and softball injuries.

Baseball and softball injuries can be a result of both acute and overuse injuries. Soft tissue injuries include contusions, abrasions, and lacerations. Return to play is allowed when risk of further injury is minimized. Common shoulder injuries include those to the rotator cuff, biceps tendon, and glenoid labrum. Elbow injuries are common in baseball and softball and include medial epicondylitis, ulnar collateral ligament injury, and osteochondritis dissecans. Typically conservative treatment with relative rest, medication, and a rehabilitation program will allow return to play. Surgical inter…

Delayed Reconstruction Following Incarceration of the Medial Epicondyle in the Elbow Joint: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

CASE: Neglected medial epicondylar fractures with intra-articular incarceration are uncommon. At 6 weeks after an elbow dislocation, an 11-year-old child was referred to our unit with painless, restricted range of motion. Clinical assessment and radiographic imaging revealed an incarcerated medial epicondylar fragment in the ulnohumeral joint. We performed open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) and transposed the ulnar nerve. The clinical and radiographic outcomes at the final follow-up were excellent. CONCLUSION: The management of neglected pediatric medial epicondylar fractures with in

The Physical Examination of the Throwing Elbow.

This section is dedicated to the comprehensive evaluation of the overhead throwing athlete's elbow. The elbow provides a unique diagnostic dilemma that requires extensive knowledge and appreciation of elbow anatomy and kinematics, given the extreme forces seen across the elbow during the overhead throwing motion, the superficial nature of the majority of anatomic structures, and the complex interplay among bony, ligamentous, musculotendinous, and neurologic structures. The physical examination of the ulnar collateral ligament, valgus extension overload syndrome, medial and lateral epicondyliti
