Cerebellar reaching ataxia is exacerbated by timing demands and assistive interaction torques.

Individuals with cerebellar ataxia face significant challenges in controlling reaching, especially when multi-joint movements are involved. This study investigated the effects of kinematic and dynamic demands on reaching using a home-based virtual reality task. Participants with and without cerebellar ataxia reached to target locations designed to elicit a range of coordination strategies between shoulder and elbow joint movements. Compared with control subjects, cerebellar subjects presented greater initial reaching direction errors, larger hand trajectory curvatures, and more variability. Ki…

A Novel Ultrasound Assessment Technique of the Ulnar Collateral Ligament to Account for the Valgus Stress Effect of Gravity on the Medial Elbow.

BACKGROUND: The ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) of the elbow is commonly injured in baseball athletes. When assessed in the supine abducted and externally rotated (ABER) position using stress ultrasonography (sUS), even before applying a valgus load, gravity pulls on the forearm, creating an initial valgus load that may distort the resting joint space measurement. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this study was to measure the valgus stress effect of gravity on the resting joint space and determine if a varus-stressed joint space provides a better baseline measurement. It was hypothesized th

Management of Elbow Trauma: Anatomy and Exposures.

The elbow is a complex joint from the anatomic and biomechanical point of view. A thorough understanding of elbow anatomy greatly aids the surgeon in dealing with elbow trauma. The close vicinity of neurovascular structures should always be kept in mind when selecting a surgical approach. Any approach to the elbow needs to be safe and versatile. Knowledge of the attachment and orientation of elbow ligaments reduces the risk of inadvertent intraoperative injury and/or postoperative instability. Surgeons dealing with elbow trauma should have a good working understanding of elbow anatomy and the

Anconeus interposition arthroplasty: mid- to long-term results.

BACKGROUND: Radiocapitellar arthritis and/or proximal radioulnar impingement can be difficult to treat. Interposition of the anconeus muscle has been described in the past as an alternative option in managing arthritis, but there are little published data about relief of pain and restoration of function over the long term in patients treated with this approach. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We sought (1) to determine whether interposition of the anconeus muscle in the radiocapitellar and/or proximal radioulnar joint relieves pain and restores elbow function; and (2) to identify complications and reoper

[Terrible triad injuries].

The complex injury pattern of a posterior elbow dislocation with concomitant radial head and coronoid fractures is usually referred to as a terrible triad injury. Due to the concomitant compromise of several osteoligamentous structures of the elbow joint relevant for stability, these injuries pose a particularly major challenge to the treating trauma surgeons. For this reason, a careful preoperative analysis of all relevant injury components is mandatory in order to make an adequate treatment decision. In most cases, surgical treatment addressing all elements relevant for stability is necessar…

[Application of elbow arthrography through lateral approach in treatment of elbow fractures in infants].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of elbow arthrography through lateral approach in the treatment of elbow fractures in infants. MET … disappeared after the Kirschner wire was pulled out. The anteroposterior and lateral X-ray films of elbow joint showed that the fractures healed well and no mulunion at the fracture site or premature epiphysis closure was observed. At last follow-up, the carrying angle was (5.2±1.9)° (range, 2°-8°) and the elbow range of motion was (137.1±4.7)° (range, 133°-1 …

An Individualized Intra-Articular Stabilization Device Designed Based on 3D Printing Technology for Traumatic Instability of the Ulnohumeral Joint.

We aimed to design an individualized intra-articular stabilization device based on 3D printing technology and investigate the clinical effec … ed to evaluate elbow function. Four months after removing the intra-articular stabilization device, elbow joint function was evaluated again using the Mayo score. The mean operation time was 100.1 ± 8.2 min, and the mean intraoperative blood loss was 35.5 ± 7.1 ml. No complications occurred after operation. Two months after surgery, eight patients received an …

Neglected synovial osteochondromatosis of the elbow: a rare case.

BACKGROUND: Synovial osteochondromatosis is a benign metaplastic proliferative disorder of the synovium characterised by the formation of mu … phs and the computed tomography showed multiple rounded, calcified bodies widespread throughout the elbow joint. At surgery we removed and counted a total of 312 loose bodies, varying in size from a few millimeters to 3 cm. The evaluation at 6 months postoperatively showed marked reduction in the volume of the elbow, improvement of extension and flexion and a …

OBJECTIVE: The clinical effect of the Shi's cervical reduction technique for cervical spondylosis and related disorders has confirmed, however, there were few studies on the body motion during manipulation in vivo study. This study is to summary the law of motion and the motion characteristics of the right operation shoulder, elbow, knee and ankle joints by data acquisition and analysis with the 3D motion capture system. METHODS: The markers were pasted on the head, trunk, left and right acromion, elbow joint, wrist joint inner side and the outer side of the inner and the outer side and the l…

Traumatic caudal elbow luxation in two cats.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic caudal elbow luxation is an uncommon injury and it is rarely reported in the cat. Closed reduction is considered in early instance but open reduction and stabilization should be evaluated if the joint cannot be reduced or if gross instability persist. CASE DESCRIPTION: This case report described two Domestic Shorthaired cats referred for monolateral forelimb non-weight bearing lameness caused by trauma. Clinical and radiographic examinations revealed a caudal elbow luxation in both patients. The cats were treated with closed reduction and the elbow joints stabilized at 4…

Umbilicated papulonodules on the elbows with purpuric papules on the fingers.

This case describes an unusual cutaneous presentation. Our patient had purpuric papules on the fingers and umbilicated nodules over the elbows, and interestingly, both lesion types showed similar histopathological features of necrobiotic granuloma with neutrophils.

Complex pediatric "Spin Dryer" injuries - An uncommon mechanism and pattern of synchronous upper limb fractures.

Ipsilateral humerus and forearm fractures, or 'floating elbow,' are high-energy injuries, uncommon in children and usually due to falls or motor vehicle accidents. Early models of washing machines were associated with various reports of upper extremity injuries in children, mostly occurring when the child attempted to remove clothes from a spinning machine. Some of these accidents resulted in serious injuries, including amputation, but have become considerably less common with the introduction of improved safety features in modern appliances. We describe the successful management of a child wi

Both procedures also restored elbow joint torque and stiffness to levels not statistically different from the intact state. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Given the sound biomechani …

Contrasting Patterns of Hemarthroses in Different Joints After Development of Hemophilic Arthropathy in a Severe Type A Hemophiliac: An Autobiographical Case Report.

Hemophilic arthropathy is a very common complication in patients suffering from severe hemophilia A (factor VIII activity level <1%). It is the most common cause of long-term joint damage and reduced mobility in people with hemophilia A. This case report describes the author's experience with different and contrasting changes in hemarthroses (bleeding episodes in joints) after developing arthropathies in said joints. While both the knees and the right elbow have severe arthropathy and arthritic changes, the hemarthroses in the knees have decreased while they have increased in the right elbow.
