Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Combined With Median Nerve Electrical Stimulation for Severe Traumatic Brain Injury.

BACKGROUND: Severe traumatic brain injury (sTBI) often leads to prolonged coma and poor neurological outcomes. Noninvasive neuromodulation techniques such as repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) and median nerve electrical stimulation (MNS) have shown potential in promoting arousal. However, the efficacy of combining these two approaches remains unclear. METHODS: In this randomized controlled trial, 86 patients with sTBI-induced coma were assigned to rTMS (n = 29), MNS (n = 29), or combination therapy (n = 28) for 4 weeks. Outcomes included awakening efficacy, EEG grading, cere

Optimized Neurotherapy With Electrical Stimulation: Combined Peripheral Nerve Stimulation and Nerve Management Procedures for Postamputation Pain.

BACKGROUND: Limb loss significantly impacts patients' well-being, with many experiencing chronic postamputation neuropathic pain, including painful neuromas. Current treatments seldom achieve reliable long-term relief. Evidence suggests that peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) can serve as an adjunctive therapy for reducing pain and enhancing nerve regeneration when combined with advanced nerve management strategies, such as targeted muscle reinnervation (TMR) or regenerative peripheral nerve interfaces (RPNIs). We hypothesize that PNS with advanced nerve management strategies can reduce postam

Brain activation following flexible stimulation paradigms of transcorneal electrical stimulation (TES) in a murine model of glaucoma.

Transcorneal electrical stimulation (TES) has been shown as a promising treatment for optic neuropathy in DBA/2J glaucoma model mice, however the current knowledge about the most effective application parameters, such as intensity and duration, is limited. In this study, after electrophysiological evaluation and intraocular pressure measurements, a single TES treatment in both eyes was performed and expression of c-Fos in the superior colliculus measured as a response. Groups were formed with 4, 8-month-old mice, 2 male and 2 female, and treated with 1, 10, or 100 μA for 10 or 30 min; a group

Dry-printed electrodes for transcutaneous electrical stimulation of innervated muscles: Towards wearable and closed-loop stimulation.

BACKGROUND: While transcutaneous electrical stimulation is an established clinical technique, applied in clinical settings, the need for precise electrode placement, limited long-term stability, and user inconvenience hinders widespread adoption in wearable and home-based applications. To address these issues, soft screen-printed electrode arrays, previously validated for biopotential recording and bioimpedance applications, were evaluated in two new contexts: (1) Systematic comparison against gel electrodes for stimulation in the neck region, and (2) Real-time closed-loop facial stimulation i

Behavioral entrainment to rhythmic auditory stimulation can be modulated by tACS depending on the electrical stimulation field properties.

Synchronization between auditory stimuli and brain rhythms is beneficial for perception. In principle, auditory perception could be improved by facilitating neural entrainment to sounds via brain stimulation. However, high inter-individual variability of brain stimulation effects questions the usefulness of this approach. Here we aimed to modulate auditory perception by modulating neural entrainment to frequency modulated (FM) sounds using transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS). In addition, we evaluated the advantage of using tACS montages spatially optimized for each individual'

Updated Technique for Reliable, Easy, and Tolerated Transcranial Electrical Stimulation Including Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a noninvasive method of neuromodulation using low-intensity direct electrical currents. This method of brain stimulation presents several potential advantages compared to other techniques, as it is noninvasive, cost-effective, broadly deployable, and well-tolerated provided proper equipment and protocols are administered. Even though tDCS is apparently simple to perform, correct administration of the tDCS session, especially the electrode positioning and preparation, is vital for ensuring reproducibility and tolerability. The electrode position

Effects of sympathetic stimulation on the rhythmical jaw movements produced by electrical stimulation of the cortical masticatory areas of rabbits.

The somatomotor and sympathetic nervous systems are intimately linked. One example is the influence of peripheral sympathetic fibers on the discharge characteristics of muscle spindles. Since muscle spindles play important roles in various motor behaviors, including rhythmic movements, the working hypothesis of this research was that changes in sympathetic outflow to muscle spindles can change rhythmic movement patterns. We tested this hypothesis in the masticatory system of rabbits. Rhythmic jaw movements and EMG activity induced by long-lasting electrical cortical stimulation were powerfully

Neuronal response to local electrical stimulation in rat thalamus: physiological implications for mechanisms of deep brain stimulation.

High-frequency deep brain stimulation (DBS) of sensorimotor thalamus containing "tremor cells" leads to tremor arrest in humans with parkinsonian and essential tremor. To examine the possible underlying mechanism(s), we recorded in vitro intracellular responses of rat thalamic neurons to local intrathalamic stimulation. Such simulated DBS (sDBS) induced a sustained membrane depolarization accompanied by an increase in apparent membrane conductance in both motor and sensory neurons. With stimulation frequency above approximately 100 Hz, the sDBS-induced depolarization most typically led to repe

Therapeutic impact of electrical stimulation versus intramuscular electrical stimulation via dry needling on tibialis anterior muscle on reducing spasticity in stroke survivors: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Stroke often leads to spasticity, complicating motor function recovery. Surface Electrical stimulation (ES) and intramuscular electrical stimulation (IMES) are promising interventions for modulating spasticity in stroke-affected muscles. AIMS: This study evaluated and compared the immediate effects of surface ES and IMES on spasticity in stroke survivors, focusing on the tibialis anterior muscle and its effects on the Gastrocnemius and Soleus muscles. METHODS: Sixty stroke survivors were randomly assigned to either the surface ES or IMES groups. Each intervention was applied for 30

Deep electric field focusing in temporal interference stimulation: a comparative analysis of TI-tACS and TI-TMS.

Non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) techniques using non-ionizing electromagnetic fields face a persistent trade-off between spatial focality and stimulation depth when targeting deep brain structures. This study systematically compares two temporal interference (TI) stimulation modalities-current-injection-based TI transcranial alternating current stimulation (TI-tACS) and electromagnetic-induction-based TI transcranial magnetic stimulation (TI-TMS)-with respect to their electric field distributions and depth-attenuation profiles at a generic deep target positioned at a depth consistent wit

Modulation of mind wandering using transcranial direct current stimulation: A meta-analysis based on electric field modeling.

Mind wandering (MW) is a heterogeneous construct involving task-unrelated thoughts. Recently, the interest in modulating MW propensity via non-invasive brain stimulation techniques has increased. Single-session transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) in healthy controls has led to mixed results in modulating MW propensity, possibly due to methodological heterogeneity. Therefore, our aim was to conduct a systematic meta-analysis to examine the influence of left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (lDLPFC) and right inferior parietal lobule (rIPL) targeted tDCS on MW propensity. Importantly, b

Enhanced basal tension in isolated rat tracheal smooth muscle stimulated by electric field stimulation under low temperature.

Exposure to cold causes cutaneous vasoconstriction to reduce body heat loss, while the airway warms up the inspired cold air, thus suggesting that cooling might evoke a response in tracheal smooth muscle different from that in cutaneous blood vessels. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of temperature on isolated rat trachea, with or without electric field stimulation (EFS). Tissue bath for isolated trachea was used. An in vitro isometric contraction of trachea from healthy male Sprague-Dawley rat (body weight: ≥ 200 g) was continuously recorded. Tension in strips of rat trachea t

The electric field distributions in anatomical head models during transcranial direct current stimulation for post-stroke rehabilitation.

PURPOSE: The lack of knowledge of the electric field distribution inside the brain of stroke patients receiving transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) calls for estimating it computationally. Moreover, the impact on this distribution of a novel clinical management approach which involves secondary motor areas (SMA) in stroke rehabilitation needs to be evaluated. Finally, the differences in the electric field distributions due to gender and age need to be investigated. METHODS: This work presents the development of two different anatomical models (young adult female and elderly male) w
