Further evidence of a skewed distribution of microfilariae in capillary blood.

Reported are results for 23 Haitian patients with capillary Wuchereria bancrofti microfilaremias greater than 30 mf/20 cmm blood. In capillary blood, the number of microfilariae was 0.9 to 7.8 times greater than expected when compared with that in venous blood. When the values for venous blood and capillary blood from these high count patients were plotted, the simple linear regression y = a + bx (r2 = .36) and the exponential function y = aebx (r2 = .34) both represented the relationship. However, when values for high and low count patients were plotted, the power function y = axb (r2 = 0.82)

The domestic cat as a host for Brugian filariasis in South Kalimantan (Borneo), Indonesia.

Three hundred and twenty-five domestic cats (Felis catus) from six villages of the Hulu Sungai Tengah and Banjar Regency of South Kalimantan (Borneo), Indonesia, were examined for filarial nematodes. Parasites were found in 66 cats, of which 61 (92.4%) had Brugia pahangi, four (6.1%) has B. malayi and one (1.5%) had Dirofilaria repens. Infection rates ranged from 11% to 22% in cats from secondary forest/rice-field habitats, from 15% to 30% in open village/rice-field habitats, to 50% in an open coastal village. In all cases the infection rate of B. malayi in man was greater than in cats from th

Brugia malayi: clearance of microfilaremia induced by diethylcarbamazine independently of antibody.

The microfilaricidal effect of diethylcarbamazine was studied in the murine model of Brugia malayi microfilaremia. CFI mice with circulating microfilariae were treated with either diethylcarbamazine (6 mg kg-1 day-1) for 10 days or with normal saline. Although antibodies against crude microfilarial antigen were detected in both groups at the time of completion of therapy, the chemically induced microfilarial clearance occurred prior to the development of these antibodies. In addition, the passive transfer of antibody just prior to chemical treatment did not enhance diethylcarbamizine-induced m

Outcomes and cost-effectiveness of an integrated holistic care package on persons affected by podoconiosis, lymphatic filariasis and leprosy and community members in north-western Ethiopia: an implementation research study.

BACKGROUND: Most studies on integration of neglected tropical disease programmes have focused on mass drug administration or environmental measures rather than Disease Management, Disability and Inclusion (DMDI). The study reported here explored integration of a DMDI care package across three disabling, stigmatising neglected tropical diseases (podoconiosis, lymphatic filariasis and leprosy), across physical and mental health, and into the state health system. METHODS: We conducted this pre-post study, the third phase of an implementation research project, in two predominantly rural districts

The impact of leprosy, podoconiosis and lymphatic filariasis on family quality of life: A qualitative study in Northwest Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have shown that leprosy, podoconiosis and lymphatic filariasis impact individual quality of life. In contrast, family quality of life has not received as much attention despite evidence that families are also affected. This is especially relevant given the crucial role of the family in most societies around the world. This study looks at the impact of leprosy, podoconiosis and lymphatic filariasis on family quality of life. METHODOLOGY: The study used a cross-sectional design with a qualitative approach. Both semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions w

Stage-specific induction of cytokines regulates the immune response in lymphatic filariasis.

Parasite stage-specific T cell responses were studied in Indians with lymphatic filariasis manifesting as elephantiasis (CP, n = 11) and asymptomatic microfilaremia (MF, n = 8), using antigens derived from the microfilarial, adult male only, and mixed adult male and female worms. Proliferative responses to microfilarial and mixed (male-female adult worm) antigens in MF individuals were markedly impaired compared to corresponding responses in individuals with CP. In contrast, T cell proliferative responses to adult male-derived antigens were not statistically different between the two groups. A…

Modeling the impact of community information dissemination on the transmission dynamics of lymphatic filariasis.

The World Health Organization has underscored the importance of implementing sustained and integrated interventions to interrupt the transmission of lymphatic filariasis (LF); however, achieving this goal requires a deeper understanding of the dynamics of the disease. In this study, we propose a deterministic mathematical model to investigate the transmission and control of LF, incorporating key factors including treated and untreated individuals, community information dissemination, immature and mature mosquito populations. We fitted the LF model to data using reported LF cases in Ghana from

Brazil was certified by the World Health Organization for having eliminated lymphatic filariasis: what now?

Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is a debilitating and stigmatizing disease. In Brazil, the disease has been the target of control and elimination strategies for more than 25 years. Recently, the country received the certificate of elimination of LF as a public health problem. In this post-elimination moment, the question arises: what now? Given the possibility of emergence and reemergence of the disease, it is important that epidemiological surveillance measures are reviewed and applied effectively.

Zoonotic brugian filariasis past and present trends in malaysia: A systematic review and proportionate meta-analysis.

Lymphatic filariasis is a neglected tropical disease of public health concern targeted for elimination globally. Malaysia is endemic to filariasis caused mainly by the filarial parasite Brugia malayi, with decades of continues elimination efforts. Despite recorded success, the disease is yet to be eliminated. Recently, reinfection in regions following mass drug administration programs and resurgence in some parts of the country raises concern as the country geared towards the 2030 filariasis elimination target. This study aims to provide pool prevalence estimates of the disease in animals and

Evidence for immune activation in pathogenesis of the HLA class II associated disease, podoconiosis.

Available evidences suggest that podoconiosis is triggered by long term exposure of bare feet to volcanic red clay soil particles. Previous genome-wide studies in Ethiopia showed association between the HLA class II region and disease susceptibility. However, functional relationships between the soil trigger, immunogenetic risk factors and the immunological basis of the disease are uncharted. Therefore, we aimed to characterise the immune profile and gene expression of podoconiosis patients relative to endemic healthy controls. Peripheral blood immunophenotyping of T cells indicated podoconios

Detection of Wuchereria bancrofti in human blood samples and mosquitoes in Matayos, Busia County-Kenya.

Lymphatic filariasis is a mosquito borne disease which leads to abnormal painful enlarged body parts, severe disability and social stigma. We screened Wuchereria bancrofti in Matayos constituency in Busia County. Blood samples were collected from 23 villages selected purposively based on clinical case reports. Finger prick and/or venous blood sampling and mosquito collections was carried out. Antigenaemia and filarial DNA prevalence were determined. Infection rates on mosquito pools were estimated and SPSS version 26 was used for descriptive statistics analysis. A total of 262 participants wer

Scaling-up filariasis lymphoedema management into the primary health care system in Kerala State, Southern India: a case study in healthcare equity.

BACKGROUND: Lymphatic filariasis (LF) remains one of the world's most debilitating parasitic infections and is a major contributor to poor health in many endemic countries. The provision of continuing care for all those affected by LF and its consequences is an important component of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals. The aim of this study is to integrate lymphedema care into the primary health care system of the State by developing lymphedema clinics at each district, through training of health personnel to fulfill WHO recommendation for morbidity management and disability pre

Lymphatic filarial serum proteome profiling for identification and characterization of diagnostic biomarkers.

Lymphatic Filariasis (LF) affects more than 863 million people in tropical and subtropical areas of the world, causing high morbidity and long illnesses leading to social exclusion and loss of wages. A combination of drugs Ivermectin, Diethylcarbamazine citrate and Albendazole is recommended by WHO to accelerate the Global Programme to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis (GPELF). To assess the outcome of GPELF, to re-evaluate and to formulate further strategies there is an imperative need for high quality diagnostic markers. This study was undertaken to identify Lymphatic Filarial biomarkers which

Spatial variation in lymphatic filariasis risk factors of hotspot zones in Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Lymphatic Filariasis (LF), a parasitic nematode infection, poses a huge economic burden to affected countries. LF endemicity is localized and its prevalence is spatially heterogeneous. In Ghana, there exists differences in LF prevalence and multiplicity of symptoms in the country's northern and southern parts. Species distribution models (SDMs) have been utilized to explore the suite of risk factors that influence the transmission of LF in these geographically distinct regions. METHODS: Presence-absence records of microfilaria (mf) cases were stratified into northern and southern

The health and economic burden of podoconiosis in Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Podoconiosis is one of the leading causes of lymphoedema-related morbidity in low-income settings, but little is known about the scale of its health and economic impact. This information is required to inform control programme planning and policy. In this study, we estimated the health and economic burden of podoconiosis in Ethiopia. METHODS: We developed a model to estimate the health burden attributed to podoconiosis in terms of the number of disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) and the economic burden. We estimated the economic burden by quantifying the treatment and morbidit
