INTRODUCTION: This study examined the mediating role of rumination in the relationship between mindfulness and difficulties in emotion regulation among female combat-sports coaches.
METHODS: A quantitative cross-sectional design was used with 398 female coaches. Data were collected using self-report measures of mindfulness, rumination, and difficulties in emotion regulation. Confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling were conducted using LISREL, and the indirect effect was tested using the Sobel test.
RESULTS: The proposed model demonstrated acceptable fit indices (CFI = 0

This study investigated emotion regulation (ER) difficulties and repetitive negative thinking (RNT) in individuals with depression, anxiety disorders, or both, compared to nonclinical controls. We aimed to determine which aspects of ER difficulties and RNT are transdiagnostic or specific to one of the disorders, and whether the presence of comorbidities is associated with greater ER difficulties and higher levels of RNT. A total of N = 731 participants, including n = 354 individuals with depression, anxiety disorders, or both (mixed group), and n = 377 nonclinical controls, completed the Diffi

Emotional intelligence (EI) and self-regulated learning (SRL) have emerged as central constructs for explaining why some students sustain engagement and achieve academically under pressure while others succumb to burnout and inefficiency. This mini-review synthesizes theoretical and empirical work on the association between EI and SRL and on the psychological pathways through which the two jointly shape academic engagement and performance. We first situate the EI-SRL relationship within self-regulation theory and contrast the ability and trait models of EI, specifying how each maps onto distin

The existing awareness of the intergenerational impacts of trauma highlights the importance of understanding how caregivers' past trauma may affect their child's ability to succeed in trauma-focused treatment, such as trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT). However, research in this area is minimal, and work focusing specifically on TF-CBT attrition is even more limited. This study investigates the predictive power of caregiver trauma on TF-CBT completion and total number of sessions attended. We additionally tested the moderating effects of caregiver depression and youth emotion

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Evidence suggests that emotion regulation is related to schizotypal traits and negative affect in adults. Few studies examined the interplay among these constructs in school-aged children. We examined the complex relationship between schizotypal traits, emotion regulation, and negative affect in children aged 9-12 years.
STUDY DESIGN: One-thousand-and-nineteen children completed the Schizotypal Personality Questionnaire-children (SPQ-C), the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS-21), and the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire for Children and Adolescence (ERQ-CA). Us

Several mental health conditions seen in older people are associated with impaired emotion regulation. Heart rate variability (HRV) may be an index of emotion regulation capacity, but it is unclear whether and how aging influences this association. Early neurodegenerative processes, such as Alzheimer's disease-related reduction of locus coeruleus (LC) integrity, may play a role, as LC modulates both HRV and self-regulatory networks. We pre-registered a cross-sectional study to investigate the relationship between measures of emotion regulation, HRV and LC structural MRI integrity in a lifespan

Emotion regulation and affect are closely linked, but little is known about the directionality of their associations in daily life contexts, there is a particular lack of studies that include positive affect and its upregulation, and numerous methodological limitations constrain conclusions that can be drawn. We tested bidirectional associations of four emotion regulation strategies (distraction, reappraisal, rumination, savoring) with positive and negative affect, using ecological momentary assessment. Adult community participants (N = 345) oversampled for treatment-seeking completed up to si

PURPOSE: Little research has focused on identifying the dynamic relationship and core features of cognitive emotion regulation strategies (CERS) that critically contribute to the onset and maintenance of NSSI. This study aims to investigate the CERS network structure in Chinese adolescents with NSSI through network analysis, identifying the core strategies within this network.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 2711 Chinese adolescents (50.5% female, mean age = 12.89 ± 0.73 years) were assessed using the CERQ. Independent t-tests were conducted to compare CERS scores between adolescents with an

Gender and sexual minority (GSM) people are at increased risk of mental health difficulties compared to their cisgender-heterosexual peers. This is likely because of exposure to minority stressors. Emotion regulation difficulties have been proposed as an important mechanism for mental health disparities in GSM populations. This systematic review and meta-analysis examined whether GSM groups differ from cisgender and heterosexual groups in global and specific aspects of emotion regulation (e.g., emotion awareness, strategies, impulse control, cognitive appraisal, and emotion suppression), and w

The link between perceptual biases and fear has been extensively documented in recent years. For example, the size of spiders is overestimated among people with a high fear of them. While emotion regulation processes are known to reduce fear, it is yet unknown whether emotion regulation can also reduce fear-related perceptual biases. This study examined the behavioral and physiological influence of cognitive reappraisal, an adaptive emotion regulation strategy, on spider size estimation among women with a high fear of spiders. Forty women with a high fear of spiders completed a trial-by-trial

Emotion regulation deficits are a hallmark of adolescent depression, and sleep greatly impacts emotion regulation. Initial data indicate acute mood benefits of slow-wave sleep deprivation (SWSD) in depressed adults, but it is unclear whether this may occur through improvement in emotion regulation. In addition, this has not been tested experimentally in adolescent depression. In this pilot study, we tested the effect of SWSD on emotion regulation in adolescents with elevated depressive symptoms. Fifteen adolescents (mean age [SD] = 17.47 [1.55] years, 12 female) completed three consecutive nig

Emotion regulation emerges during childhood and engages prefrontal brain systems. While most developmental studies focus on the neural underpinnings of negative emotion regulation, less is known about the neuroanatomical correlates of positive emotion regulation. In adults, prefrontal areas in the left hemisphere are critical for positive emotion regulation, but whether this association is present in children is unknown. We investigated whether smaller gray matter volume in left prefrontal regions related to worse positive emotion regulation in children with and without dyslexia. Because dysle

BACKGROUND: Existing evidence suggests that urgency-the tendency to act rashly under intense positive or negative affect-reflects dysregulated incidental emotion regulation (ER). Urgency has been reported to predict the intensity and frequency of video gaming and gambling craving, but not the translation of craving onto severity of problem symptoms. However, the role of intentional ER strategies, such as cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression, in craving control remains underexplored.
METHOD: 303 regular gamblers and 355 regular video gamers were assessed on urgency traits, ER strat

Emotion dysregulation (ED) is a vulnerability factor for affective disorders that may originate from deficits in cognitive control (CC). Although measures of ED are often designed to assess trait-like tendencies, the extent to which such measures capture a time-varying (TV) or state-like construct versus a time-invariant (TI) or trait-like personality characteristic is unclear. The link between the TV and TI components of ED and CC is also unclear. In a 6-wave, 5-month longitudinal study, community participants (n = 1281) completed the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS-16), a comm

Personality pathology is associated with emotional problems that are potentially attributable to problematic emotion regulation strategy patterns. We evaluated the emotion regulation strategies associated with the pathological personality traits in the Alternative Model of Personality Disorders (AMPD). A total of 504 participants completed measures of AMPD traits and strategy usage, which were analyzed using hierarchical regressions and latent profile analysis (LPA). Regression results demonstrated that each trait was associated with a unique strategy pattern: negative affect with emotional ov

BACKGROUND: Although an association has been newly reported between obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and an increased risk of suicide, there are only a limited number of studies investigating suicide-related factors in OCD patients. The aim of this study is to evaluate the relationship between dysfunctional metacognitive activity, difficulty in emotion regulation, anxiety, depression, somatization symptom severity, and suicide probability in OCD patients by comparing them with a control group.
METHODS: Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale, Metacognition Scale, Suicide Probability Scale

INTRODUCTION: Environmental sensitivity is defined as the ability to perceive and process internal and external information. Previous studies have suggested that mental health-related factors differ by sensitivity level. This study aimed to investigate whether environmental sensitivity moderates the associations between cognitive emotion regulation strategies (e.g., rumination and blaming others) and mental health.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this three-wave longitudinal study, participants (N = 1,233, 585, and 349 at Times 1, 2, and 3, respectively) completed the Cognitive Emotion Regulation Q
