[Significant aortic valve stenosis in the prenatal period--diagnosis, treatment, outcome. Two-center study].

OBJECTIVE: Retrospective analysis of the spectrum of fetal aortic valve stenosis with completed neonatal follow-up. METHODS: Fetal echocard … c anomalies. 2. Neonates who survived with fetal SA, had isolated CHD and well formed LV (also with endocardial fibroelastosis).

Prolapse Volume to Prolapse Height Ratio for Differentiating Barlow's Disease From Fibroelastic Deficiency.

BACKGROUND: As mitral valve (MV) repair for Barlow's disease remains surgically challenging, it is important to distinguish Barlow's disease from fibroelastic deficiency (FED) preoperatively. We hypothesized that the prolapse volume to prolapse height ratio (PV-PH ratio) may be useful to differentiate Barlow's disease and FED. METHODS AND RESULTS: In 76 patients with MV prolapse who underwent presurgical transesophageal echocardiography, the 3D MV morphology was quantified: 19 patients were diagnosed with Barlow's disease and 57 with FED. The patients with Barlow's disease had greater prolaps

[A case of cardioembolic stroke due to intracardiac papillary fibroelastoma evaluated by using transesophageal echocardiography].

A 62-year-old woman had a prior ischemic stroke in the right temporal lobe with dysarthria and dysesthesia of the left hand. Embolic stroke of undetermined source (ESUS) was diagnosed and warfarin was administered. However, transient ischemic attack recurred upon admission to our hospital. Paroxysmal atrial fibrillation and cerebral arterial stenotic lesions were absent. Transesophageal echocardiography revealed a mobile hyperechoic structure on the aortic valve indicating papillary fibroelastoma. She was diagnosed with a brain embolism due to the intracardiac tumor which was surgically excise

A rare case of a cardiac papillary fibroelastoma of the pulmonary valve diagnosed by echocardiography.

Primary cardiac tumors are rare. The majority of primary tumors of the heart are benign with papillary fibroelastomas being the third most common after myxomas and lipomas respectively. Papillary fibroelastomas represent the most common valvular tumor of the heart. Although benign, papillary fibroelastomas have the potential to cause turbulent flow, thrombus formation, and severe cerebral or coronary embolic disease. The majority of fibroelastomas have been described on the left side of the heart involving the aortic and mitral valves. We present a rare case of a papillary fibroelastoma occurr

Heart transplantation in a patient with isolated noncompaction of the left ventricular myocardium.

We describe a patient with isolated noncompaction of the left ventricle who presented with worsening congestive heart failure and was successfully treated with heart transplantation. The prognosis for these patients is poor because of accelerated event rates of fatal arrhythmias, thromboemboli, and profound left ventricular decompensation. Only 7 patients with isolated noncompaction of the left ventricle have been reported to have undergone heart transplantation. Herein we describe a patient with isolated noncompaction of the left ventricle who underwent successful heart transplantation.

Cardiomyopathy in infancy: observations in an epidemiologic study.

Cardiomyopathy (Cm), a rare form of cardiac disease in infancy, is receiving increasing attention stimulated by the availability of endocard … ied clinicopathologically as follows: dilated Cm (n = 17), hypertrophic Cm (n = 26), tumor (n = 5), endocardial fibroelastosis (n = 5), glycogen storage (n = 1), mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome (n = 1), and infarction (n = 1). Eleven syndromic associations and six metabolic disturbances indicate genetic risk factors. Some of the same syndromes occurred in other infants wh …

Failing stentless Bioprostheses in patients with carcinoid heart valve disease.

BACKGROUND: Carcinoid tumor with consecutive endocardial fibroelastosis of the right heart, known as carcinoid heart valve disease (CHVD) or Hedinger's syndrome, is accompanied by combined right-sided valvular dysfunction with regurgitation and stenosis of the affected valves. Cardiac surgery with replacement of the tricuspid and/or pulmonary valve is an established therapeutic option for patients with Hedinger's syndrome. Little is known about the long term outcome and the choice of prosthesis for the pulmonal position is still a matter of debate. METHODS: The authors report three cases of p…

Anomalous left coronary artery arising from the pulmonary artery: a series of 27 infants undergoing operation in the first years of life.

Between 1977 and 1987, 27 infants (aged 3 to 54 months) underwent surgical treatment for correction of an anomalous left coronary artery ari … ccessful, surgery aims to avoid irreversible left ventricular dysfunction and development of severe endocardial fibroelastosis.

Left ventricular noncompaction: a pathological study of 14 cases.

Left ventricular noncompaction (LVNC) has been recently proposed as a specific form of cardiomyopathy. There have been few pathological seri … atient had a sibling with pulmonary stenosis, but there was no other known familial cardiomyopathy. Endocardial fibroelastosis was a characteristic histological feature, as well as anastomosing or polypoid endocardial trabeculations, which resulted in staghorn-shaped, endocardial-lined recesses. There was a high rate of other cardiac anomalies, which often coexisted and wer …

The Left Ventricular Myocardium in Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome.

Hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) is a collective term applied to severe congenital cardiac malformations, characterised by a combinati … e different based on the sub-group of HLHS. In addition, we discuss the histological appearances of endocardial fibroelastosis (EFE), which is a common feature of one specific sub-group of HLHS. Lastly, we suggest investigations that should ideally be undertaken using HLHS myocardial tissues at early stages of HLHS development to identify biological pathways and aid the und …
