OBJECTIVE: Combined use of vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) and caloric response testing has enabled us to examine the function of the inferior and superior vestibular nerves separately. Although results of VEMP testing and caloric response testing have been reported for many diseases, a clinical entity showing abnormal VEMP responses but normal caloric test responses has rarely been reported. The aim of the study was to investigate clinical features of diseases showing abnormal VEMP responses with normal caloric test responses.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective.

PURPOSE: To present a case of a child with an extensive facial hemangioma in whom the suspicion of intracranial involvement was raised by visual evoked potential (VEP) evaluation.
DESIGN: Observational case report.
METHODS: VEP analysis was performed using flash and pattern stimuli to determine whether treatment intervention other than occlusion therapy was needed.
RESULTS: VEP analysis indicated a marked transoccipital asymmetry in the flash and pattern VEP suggestive of right hemispheric dysfunction. Neuroimaging showed intracranial extension of the hemangioma.
CONCLUSION: The VEP evalua

OBJECTIVE: Acoustic stimulation of the saccule gives rise to a vestibulocollic reflex, the output of which can be measured in the neck as inhibition of activity in the ipsilateral sternocleidomastoid muscle. This vestibular evoked myogenic potential has been promoted as a means of assessing integrity of saccular function. In this study, we test the hypothesis that the cochleosaccular hydrops of Ménière's syndrome leads to alterations in saccular motion that change the dynamics of the vestibular evoked myogenic potential.
STUDY DESIGN: Prospective cohort study.

DSEPs provide clinicians with a safe, noninvasive technique useful in determining which patients with anatomic spinal stenosis have the added component of neurogenic compromise. Based on physiologic principles, level-by-level prolongation of DSEP latencies, reduction of amplitude, asymmetry, or a complete absence of response is associated with dysfunction in that particular afferent neurologic pathway. This dysfunction does not correspond to the exact level of stenosis noted on MRI because the rootlets in the lumbar and sacral regions pass through multiple spinal segments as they course rostra

The use of motor evoked potentials (MEPs) to study the integrity of pelvic floor motor innervation is poorly described in the literature. This study evaluated the clinical use of pelvic floor MEPs in 16 women with multiple sclerosis. Lower urinary tract dysfunction was assessed with urodynamic investigations. Transcutaneous magnetic stimulation was applied over the motor cortex and spinal roots, and MEPs were recorded from the puborectalis, the external urethral sphincter, and the abductor hallucis muscles. In many patients, responses from the pelvic floor muscles could not be evoked, and cent…

We report results of vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) in patients with cerebellopontine angle tumors and compare results obtained using clicks with those obtained using 500 Hz short tone bursts (STB). We reviewed the records of 87 patients with cerebellopontine angle tumors. Clicks (0.1 ms, 95 dB nHL) were presented to all patients and STB (500 Hz, rise/fall time 1 ms, plateau time 2 ms, 95 dB nHL) were presented to 27 patients. Click-evoked VEMPs were abnormal in 69/87 patients (79%; no response in 55 patients, decreased response in 14 patients, normal response in 18 patients). S

Direct current auditory evoked potentials (DC-AEPs) are a sensitive indicator of depth of anesthesia in animals. However, they have never been investigated in humans. To assess the potential usefulness of DC-AEPs as an indicator of anesthesia in humans, we performed an explorative study in which DC-AEPs were recorded during propofol and methohexital anesthesia in humans. DC-AEPs were recorded via 22 scalp electrodes in 19 volunteers randomly assigned to receive either propofol or methohexital. DC-AEPs were evoked by binaurally presented 2-s, 60-dB, 800-Hz tones; measurements were taken during …

Patients with superior canal dehiscence (SCD) syndrome have vertigo and oscillopsia induced by loud noises and by stimuli that result in changes in middle ear or intracranial pressure. We recorded vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials (VEMP responses) in 10 patients with SCD syndrome. The diagnosis had been confirmed in each case by evoked eye movements and by high-resolution CT scans of the temporal bones that showed a dehiscence overlying the affected superior canal. For the 8 patients without prior middle ear disease, the VEMP threshold from the dehiscent ears measured 72 +/- 8 dB NHL (norm

Centrally acting cholinesterase inhibitors (ChEls) improve cognitive functions in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other forms of dementia. Evaluation of treatment efficacy is based mainly on subjective assessment tools which includes standardized neuropsychological tests. Therefore, an additional objective tool for the evaluation of drug response is necessary. Thirty two patients were treated with ChEls for dementia (tacrine 19, donepezil 5, rivastigmine 8). Cognitive response was assessed before ChEls (baseline) and after 26 weeks, as optimal tolerated doses were achieved and maintained (endpoin

Somatosensory evoked potential (SSEP) changes during cerebral aneurysm surgery and their relationship to postoperative neurologic complications have been studied on many occasions. However, it is still a matter of debate whether SSEP monitoring is really helpful in detecting or preventing neurologic complications. We studied 87 patients undergoing aneurysm surgery of the anterior cerebral circulation and SSEPs were monitored in 60 of these patients. All patients were grade 2 by the subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) grading system. Median nerve SSEP was monitored for middle cerebral or internal car

The pharmacology of auditory brain-stem evoked potentials (ABEP) pathways is poorly understood. There are anecdotal reports on the involvement of various neurotransmitters but they were not investigated systematically. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects on ABEP of muscarinic and nicotinic blockers, administered into the cerebral ventricles. Atropine sulfate, d-Tubocurarine and saline were injected stereotactically into the lateral cerebral ventricle of anesthetized male rats. Auditory clicks were given at a rate of 20 s(-1). ABEP recording was performed before and 30 min afte…

Clinicopathological findings in X-linked recessive bulbospinal neuronopathy were characterized by loss of myelinated fibers in the fasciculus gracilis and depletion of neurons in the ventral horn throughout the same segments. Clinical profile of this rare motor neuron disease include sign and symptom of lower motor neuron involving bulbar and spinal level with minimal or no sensory deficit. Previous electrodiagnostic findings consist of electrophysiological evidence of anterior horn cell disease and decreased or absent sensory action potentials in the peripheral nerve. The role of somatosensor

In this study, we measured VEMP in patients with disturbed function of inner ear. We studied 4 patients with unilateral sensorineural deafness and normal excitability of vestibular organs; 6 persons with unilateral weakness of vestibular function and 10 healthy subjects. We found that in patients with unilateral weakness of vestibular function VEMPs had short latencies and diminished amplitudes whereas in patients with unilateral deafness VEMPs were unchanged. These data strongly suggested that VEMPs were generated by stimulation of vestibular and not cochlear part of inner ear-sacculus. Our d

INTRODUCTION: Early Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry (BERA) is a modern noninvasive, objective neurophysiological method for evaluation of hearing threshold. This method is applied in the complex otoneurological diagnostic procedure. The aim of the complete functional diagnostic procedure of hearing impairment in children is to determine the hearing level for the purpose of an early, adequate and quality hearing stimulation which affects the morphophysiological development of the complex auditory system. There are programs for early detection of the hearing impairment which give high-risk

OBJECT: The aim of this study was to seek evidence about the generators of the first three components of the scalp's early trigeminal evoked potentials (TEPs) obtained by stimulation of the supraorbital (SW1, SW2, and SW3), infraorbital (W1, W2, and W3) and mental (MW1, MW2, and MW3) nerves.
METHODS: Simultaneous scalp and depth recordings were measured during surgical procedures in which thermorhizotomy and microvascular decompression were performed.
CONCLUSIONS: Direct evidence was found that the origin of MW1 lies in the mandibular nerve at the foramen ovale, whereas the origin of W1 in t…
