The authors observed for 5 to 18 years 41 patients (22 women and 19 men) with malignant iris melanoma and/or malignant melanoma of ciliary body. The age of the patients was 20 to 80 years. All patients underwent surgical treatment with preservation of the eye ball. In 21 cases iridectomy, in 18 cases iridocyclectomy, and in the remaining cases iridocyclectomy-choroidectomy was performed. In 25 eyes the tumour occupied less than 1/4, and in 16 eyes between 1/4 and 1/2 of the iris circumference. Clonidine hydrochloride has been demonstrated to produce vasoconstriction in the anterior segment of the cat eye. The mode of this action has been found to be due to direct stimulation of alpha-adrenergic receptors. In the intact, enucleated, arterially perfused eye, clonidine was found to decrease the rate of aqueous humor production. We suggest that clonidine, like hydroxyamphetamine hydrobromide, phenylephrine hydrochloride, and dopamine hydrochloride, decreases aqueous humor formation by constriction of afferent ciliary process blood vessels.

RATIONALE: Enucleation implants are covered with a material that allows the fixation of the extraocular rectus muscles. Usually, the implants are covered in donor sclera, which implies the risk of infection transmission, inflammation and implant rejection, being also an expensive procedure. The new materials used for implant meshing should be tested and a safer and cost effective solution should be researched.
OBJECTIVE: This study presents the results obtained after a 15-year use of an original prosthesis for the reconstruction of the orbital cavity after enucleation surgery.

A toddler with bilateral retinoblastoma (Rb) received intravenous chemotherapy for advanced tumours in both eyes. A neoplasm of the ciliary body extending from the equator to the iris and the anterior chamber was observed in an 18-year old girl. Because the visual acuity was lost and the clinical diagnosis was uncertain the eye was enucleated. Both optic and electron microscopic investigations allowed the diagnosis of the mesectodermal type of leiomyoma of the ciliary body.
