Association between poor food production and intimate partner violence among smallholder farmers in northwestern Benin.

Rates of intimate partner violence (IPV) remain concerningly high in Benin, particularly in the predominantly rural region of Atacora in the northwest. In the context of increasing food insecurity, concerns have been raised regarding the role that lack of food in the household may be playing in increasing the rate of IPV in this context. This study aims to investigate the association between household food production and IPV in Atacora, Benin. Using a social ecological model and drawing from family stress theory, we analysed data from a cross-sectional survey of 300 women in the study region.

The Association Between Sagittal Plane Alignment and Disc Space Narrowing of Lumbar Spine in Farmers.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether lumbar lordosis (LL) and lumbar segmental lordosis (LSL) are related to sex, age, low back pain (LBP), and lumbar disc space narrowing (DSN). METHODS: A total of 569 farmers were recruited. In lateral spine radiograph, LL (L1-L5) and LSL (L1, L2, L3, L4, and L5) were measured using Cobb's method. The differences in LSL values (ΔLSL) according to the presence or absence of a DSN were calculated as LSLDSN - LSLnoDSN for each DSN level. RESULTS: In male, the lateral spine radiograph showed significantly greater L4-LSL and L5-LSL and smaller L1-LSL and L2-LSL co…

Perceptions and practices of Australian cattle farmers for the treatment of pinkeye (infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis).

Pinkeye or infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis is a globally significant disease and occurs in every state of Australia. Economic loss due to pinkeye can be considerable and it is a major welfare concern, but not all cattle with the disease are treated by farmers. This study was conducted to understand the perceptions and practices of Australian farmers regarding the treatment of pinkeye: factors influencing when farmers treat pinkeye, treatments used and considered effective, and reasons for not treating. Data were gathered using a custom designed online questionnaire. Farmer responses sui…

Implementing large Foot and Mouth Disease vaccination programmes for smallholder farmers: lessons from Lao PDR.

This study assessed smallholder finances and their attitudes towards the Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) vaccination programme, when 1 620 000 vaccine doses were provided for strategic administration in large ruminants in FMD 'high-risk' areas in Laos between 2012 and 2016. Farmers (n = 168) in the provinces of Xayyabouli (XYL), Xiengkhoung (XK) and Huaphan (HP), were interviewed. Over 91% of the farmers responded that their livestock were vaccinated for FMD, with over 86% ranking FMD vaccination as a good or very good intervention. No FMD cases were reported from the vaccinated provinces after M…

The association between awkward working posture and low back disorders in farmers: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Low back disorders (LBD) are the most common musculoskeletal problem among farmers, with higher prevalence than other occupations. Although studies of the general population have shown an association between LBD and awkward working posture, farmers have unique work context and exposures that may modify this relationship. This review aimed to 1) identify published research studies investigating posture as a risk factor for LBD in farmers/agricultural workers, and 2) determine the strength of the relationship between postural exposure and LBD risk of bias assessment. METHOD: Compreh…

Assessing the impact of a novel strategy for delivering animal health interventions to smallholder farmers.

In many countries of the developing world village poultry play a vital role in the rural economy, providing a source of protein and valuable … ncrease in the frequency with which chicken meat was consumed and chickens were sold. Additionally, farmers reported fewer ND outbreaks, but this is prone to reporting bias and so improvements in production cannot be categorically ascribed to ND vaccination. These results have shown that establishing a market driven approach for the distribution of ND vac …

Infantile Systemic Hyalinosis: Novel Founder Mutation in the Initiation Codon among "Malis (Farmers)" in Jodhpur.

Infantile systemic hyalinosis (OMIM 236490) is a progressive autosomal recessive disorder characterized by widespread deposition of hyaline material in many tissues leading to multiple subcutaneous skin nodules, gingival hypertrophy and joint contractures. The authors describe five children from four unrelated families, from the "mali (farmer)" community in Jodhpur, with the disorder. All of them had classical clinical features, and four died from severe infections between age of 7 mo to 3 y. Two affected children had the same, but novel mutation in the initiation codon, in homozygous form c.1

Occupational exposure to pesticides, nicotine and minor psychiatric disorders among tobacco farmers in southern Brazil.

INTRODUCTION: Exposure to pesticides has been associated with psychiatric problems among farm workers, although there is still controversy as to chemical types, intensity and forms of exposure that represent risk factors for neuropsychological problems. Furthermore, tobacco workers are exposed to dermal absorption of nicotine, although its effect on mental health has not yet been studied. OBJECTIVES: To identify the prevalence of minor psychiatric disorders (MPD) among tobacco farmers and associated factors, paying special attention to pesticide and nicotine exposure. METHODS: This is a cros…
