Necrotizing fasciitis. Review of the literature and case report.

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) of the hand was preceded by an outbreak of porphyria cutanea tarda in a 31-year-old woman. The presentation, course, differential diagnosis, and treatment of necrotizing fasciitis, including a review of the literature, illustrates the indications for hyperbaric oxygen therapy for this life-threatening infection.

Necrotizing fasciitis. A serious sequela of omphalitis in the newborn.

We reviewed all cases of omphalitis seen at Childrens Hospital of Los Angeles from 1961 to 1981. One hundred and forty patients were seen and, of these, eight had necrotizing fasciitis. All patients with necrotizing fasciitis acquired omphalitis at home, making the incidence of necrotizing fasciitis over 10% in patients with community acquired omphalitis. Most of the infants appeared relatively well on admission with no fever but had a marked leukocytosis. The disease rapidly spread to involve most of the abdominal wall over a period of several hours to days. Seven of the eight patients died (

Necrotizing fasciitis as a lethal complication of peritonsillar abscess.

Abscesses of the peritonsillar region rarely lead to serious complications. Incision and drainage, antibiotic therapy, and subsequent tonsillectomy is the accepted method of treatment. Two cases of fatal necrotizing fasciitis following peritonsillar abscess are presented. The entity of necrotizing fasciitis in the head and neck is discussed with respect to its presentation, diagnosis, and treatment.

The value of bacteriology and serology in the diagnosis of necrotizing fasciitis.

Fourteen patients with necrotizing fasciitis are described. In thirteen the cause was Streptococcus pyogenes [Group A beta haemolytic streptococcus (BHS)]; in the fourteenth, Staphylococcus aureus was responsible. In the acute fulminating form of the disease, BHS can be cultured from the affected tissues. In the less acute form, particularly when the patient has been previously treated with antibiotics, other bacteria colonize the tissues and the BHS cannot be isolated. Serological evidence of infection with Streptococcus pyogenes can be ascertained in all such patients by finding high levels

Necrotizing fasciitis-a disease of temperate and warm climates.

Necrotizing fasciitis is a distinct clinical entity. It is usually due to Streptococcus pyogenes but may occasionally be caused by Staphylococcus aureus. It needs to be considered in relationship to other infections due to Streptococcus pyogenes, in which the clinical disease that occurs may be associated with the depth of inoculation of the coccus. Mild cases have been identified that are self-limiting as well as serious cases which would have succumbed without surgical debridement. It is likely that some cases of necrotic tropical ulcer are due to necrotizing fasciitis.

The characteristics of oro-cervical necrotizing fasciitis-Comparison with severe cellulitis of oro-cervical region and necrotizing fasciitis of other body regions.

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is an acute and life-threatening soft-tissue infection however rarely seen in oro-cervical region. Therefore, the details of oro-cervical NF (OCNF) are not well known. The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics of OCNF by comparing it with severe cellulitis of oro-cervical region (OCSC) or NF of other body regions (e.g., limb, perineum, and trunk) (BNF), respectively. MATERIALS AND METHODS: At first, various risk factors for OCNF in oro-cervical severe infection (OCSI; composed of OCNF and OCSC), including neutrophil-to-lymphocyte r

Distribution of Necrotizing fasciitis Using the Laboratory Risk Indicator for Necrotizing Fasciitis (LRINEC) Score Among Patients Attending a Tertiary Hospital in Chennai.

Background Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a rapidly progressing infection with a high mortality rate, requiring prompt diagnosis and treatment. The Laboratory Risk Indicator for NF (LRINEC) score has emerged as a useful tool for early risk stratification. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted on 112 patients diagnosed with NF in a tertiary hospital in Chennai. Clinical data, including LRINEC scores and associated laboratory parameters, were collected and analyzed. The relationship between LRINEC scores and risk factors, such as gender, comorbidities (diabetes mellitus [DM] and periphera

Is it necrotizing fasciitis or necrotizing cellulitis after varicella zoster infection? Two case reports.

Necrotizing fasciitis and necrotizing cellulitis are serious cutaneous complications in varicella patients. Differentiation of necrotizing cellulitis from necrotizing fasciitis can initially be challenging because of indistinct clinical course at the onset of infection and the lack of definitive diagnostic criteria. This paper reports 2 children with necrotizing cellulitis that developed after varicella infection to draw the attention of health care providers to necrotizing cellulitis that showed slower clinical course than necrotizing fasciitis and recovered with conservative treatment approa

Magnetic resonance imaging differentiates between necrotizing and non-necrotizing fasciitis of the lower extremity.

BACKGROUND: Distinction between uncomplicated infective fasciitis and early necrotizing fasciitis can be extremely difficult without operation, yet the management and prognosis of both conditions depend greatly on early recognition and assessment of the extent of involvement. STUDY DESIGN: This was a prospective review of the utility of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in nine patients with suspected infective or necrotizing fasciitis treated at an academic medical center or a Veterans Administration hospital. RESULTS: Magnetic resonance imaging documented fascial inflammation, characterized

Labial Necrotizing Fasciitis Caused by Pelvic Eggerthia catenaformis Infection.

A patient with comorbid diabetes mellitus, obesity, and hypertension acutely presented to the ED due to labial cellulitis with rapidly progressing symptoms of systemic inflammation. Clinical examination revealed fever and groin pain that was tender to palpation. Initial contrast-enhanced CT scans showed labial cellulitis extending to the inguinal canal, with later CT imaging findings of subcutaneous air indicative of necrotizing fasciitis (NF). Antimicrobial therapy was initiated empirically and later tailored to culture antibiogram. The patient underwent acute surgical abscess drainage and ti
