The importance of family support to engage and retain girls in male dominated action sports. A qualitative study of young people's perspectives.

ISSUE ADDRESSED: Social support is positively correlated with physical activity (PA), especially amongst girls, but is underexplored in male-dominated action sports (e.g., mountain biking, skateboarding and surfing). This study explored family level social support needs and experiences of girls and boys in three action sports. METHOD: Aspiring, current or former Australian adolescent (12-18 years; girls n = 25; boys n = 17) mountain bikers, skateboarders and/or surfers were individually interviewed (telephone/Skype) in 2018/2020. A socio-ecological framework guided the semi-structured intervi

Mapping emotional components in daily parent-child interactions: A multilevel psychological network approach.

Daily parent-child interactions are emotionally rich and offer valuable insights into emotional processing and parenting functioning. To examine how key emotional components interact within and across individuals in everyday contexts, we combined an experience sampling method with a multilevel psychological network approach, grounded in several prominent emotion and parenting theories. The emotional components we examined were (a) parents' own emotions, (b) their perceptions of their children's emotions, and (c) their use of self- and child-focused reappraisal and rumination strategies. Data w

Children With Early-Onset Disruptive Behavior: Parental Mental Disorders Predict Poor Psychosocial Functioning in Adolescence.

OBJECTIVE: Parental mental disorders (MD) and child early-onset disruptive behavior (DB) are well-established risk factors for poor outcomes in adolescence. However, it is not clear whether parental MD increases risk of future maladjustment among children who already display DB. METHOD: Parents of 9-year-old children reported on child DB, whereas a patient registry was used to determine parental MD. At follow-ups at ages 15 (n = 6,319) and 18 (n = 3,068) years, information about various problems were collected via registries, parent-, and self-reports. RESULTS: In the total sample, child DB

Parent-child hostility and child and adolescent depression symptoms: the direction of effects, role of genetic factors and gender.

Identifying environmental risk factors in the pathway to depression is an important research goal. To extend prior research, designs that rule out alternative explanatory factors; genetic effects and reverse causation, and permit tests of both parent and child gender are required. The present study used two different samples to address these issues. A longitudinal community sample of 316 families (157 boys, 159 girls) aged 11-12 years (mean 11.7) at Time 1 and 12-13 years at Time 2 (mean 12.7) was used to test the direction of effects between parent hostility and child and adolescent depressio

Remission of maternal depression and child symptoms among single mothers: a STAR*D-Child report.

OBJECTIVE: Offspring of depressed parents are at increased risk for depressive and other disorders. We recently found that when depressed mothers reached full remission over 3 months of treatment, a significant improvement in the children's disorders occurred. Since only a third of the mothers remitted, factors related to maternal remission rates, and thereby child outcomes, were important. This report examined the relationship of the presence of a father in the household to maternal depression remission and child outcomes. METHOD: Maternal depression was measured using the 17-item Hamilton R

Associations between paternal depression and behaviour problems in children of 4-6 years.

Maternal depression is associated with adverse child development, however little is known about paternal depression and child outcome. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of paternal depression and assess its association with abnormal child behaviours among 4- 6-year-olds. Parents of 4- 6-years-olds were recruited via general practices and completed measures on child behaviour (Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire), depression (Patient Health Questionnaire), and other covariates. The association of major and other paternal depressive syndrome with mother reported child beh

Associations between maternal and paternal depressive symptoms and early child behavior problems: Testing a mutually adjusted prospective longitudinal model.

BACKGROUND: While there is substantial empirical work on maternal depression, less is known about how mothers' and fathers' depressive symptoms compare in their association with child behavior problems in early childhood. In particular, few studies have examined unique relationships in the postpartum period by controlling for the other parent, or looked at longitudinal change in either parent's depressive symptoms across the first living years as a predictor of child problems. METHODS: We examined depressive symptoms in parents at 6, 12, 24, 36 and 48 months following childbirth, and child be

The proportion of genetic similarity for liability for neuroticism in mother-child and mother-father dyads is associated with reported relationship quality.

This study aims to explore the influence of genetic similarity for neuroticism liability in mother's reported quality of relationship with her child and partner. Such understanding could provide insight into the role of genetic similarity in neuroticism liability in close relationships. Molecular genetic data in 4,704 mothers, partners, and children in the Avon Longitudinal Study Parents And Children (ALSPAC) study were used to derive the proportion of genetic similarity in neuroticism liability between mother and child, and mother and partner, for genetic variants associated with neuroticism.

Gender and coping: the parents of children with high functioning autism.

Gender is a concept that is frequently discussed in the literature on stress, coping and illness. Research has reported that women are more vulnerable than men are to stressful events and use different strategies to cope with them. Furthermore, it is often asserted that these gender-based differences in coping may partially explain the differential impact of stressful events on men and women. Unfortunately, much of this research has equated gender with sex and failed to contextualise the experience of illness and coping. This paper presents a qualitative analysis of the role of gender and copi

Mind the gap: parental perspectives on mental health service transitions for young adults with anorexia nervosa.

INTRODUCTION: The transition from Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) to Adult Mental Health Services (AMHS) is known to be difficult. For young persons (YP) with anorexia nervosa (AN) transitioning between services might be particularly challenging due to the timing, often coinciding with other key life changes. The potential consequences of inadequate transition are many: treatment dropout, heightened symptom load, and increased distress amongst patients and relatives. Furthermore, the parent-child relationship may be affected by the changes related to service transition. Par

Parenting after a history of childhood maltreatment: A scoping review and map of evidence in the perinatal period.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Child maltreatment is a global health priority affecting up to half of all children worldwide, with profound and ongoing impacts on physical, social and emotional wellbeing. The perinatal period (pregnancy to two years postpartum) is critical for parents with a history of childhood maltreatment. Parents may experience 'triggering' of trauma responses during perinatal care or caring for their distressed infant. The long-lasting relational effects may impede the capacity of parents to nurture their children and lead to intergenerational cycles of trauma. Conversely, the peri
