Smoking and infertility: multivariable regression and Mendelian randomization analyses in the Norwegian Mother, Father and Child Cohort Study.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between smoking and infertility. DESIGN: Prospective study. SETTING: Nationwide cohort. PATIENTS: 28,606 women and 27,096 men with questionnaire and genotype information from the Norwegian Mother, Father, and Child Cohort Study. INTERVENTION: Self-reported information on smoking (having ever smoked [both sexes], age at initiation [women only], cessation [women only], and cigarettes/week in current smokers [both sexes]) was gathered. Genetically predetermined levels or likelihood of presenting these traits were estimated for Mendelian randomization.

Discrepancies between mother and father ratings of child behavior after early mild traumatic brain injury.

Mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI) are highly prevalent during early childhood and can lead to behavioral difficulties. Parent report questionnaires are widely used to assess children's behavior, but they are subject to parental bias. The aim of this study was to investigate parental discrepancies in internalized and externalized behavior ratings of children who sustain mTBI in early childhood (i.e., between 18 and 60 months) and to determine if parenting stress or family burden related to the injury contribute to parental discrepancies. Mothers and fathers of 85 children with mTBI, 58 ortho…

Parents' age at birth and daughters' time to pregnancy: a study within the Norwegian Mother, Father and Child Cohort.

STUDY QUESTION: Is parents' age at birth associated with daughters' fecundability? SUMMARY ANSWER: Daughters born to mothers <25 years or fathers ≥35 years had slightly lower fecundability. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Two recent studies reported lower fecundability in women born to mothers <20 years, which may be partly due to daughters of young mothers being less likely to plan their pregnancies. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION: A retrospective cohort study of 58 496 pregnancy planners (4290 of whom conceived with treatment) and 14 194 non-planners enrolled in the Norwegian Mother, Father and Chil…

"It's a lot of pain you've got to hide": a qualitative study of the journey of fathers facing traumatic pregnancy and childbirth.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to explore the emotional and behavioural responses and coping strategies of fathers or expectant fathers who faced a significant traumatic event during a partner's pregnancy, labour, or the postpartum period. METHODS: This prospective qualitative study of 24 fathers was conducted at a public teaching hospital in Brisbane, Australia. 'Traumatic pregnancy' was defined as a pregnancy complicated by life-threatening or severe risk to the mother and the fetus, termination of pregnancy, intrauterine fetal death or stillbirth. Semi-structured interviews of participants we…

Interchromosomal effect: Report of a father and son, bearing different translocations of the same chromosome, and a review of the current literature.

Interchromosomal effect is a controversial phenomenon postulating that during gametogenesis of translocation carriers, aside from the unbalanced segregation of chromosomes involved in the translocation, other, structurally normal chromosomes might also be affected and segregated abnormally. Here, we present a balanced reciprocal translocation carrier t(15;20)(q11;p13), and his son, bearing a different translocation of chromosome 15, t(15;Y)(q11;q12). To further elucidate the so-far-controversial interchromosomal effect phenomenon, published original articles and case reports about interchromos

Anxiety in the family: a genetically informed analysis of transactional associations between mother, father and child anxiety symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety in parents is associated with anxiety in offspring, although little is known about the mechanisms underpinning these int … nalyses using only paternal offspring reports and using a second measure of child anxiety symptoms. Fathers' anxiety symptoms at child age 6 prospectively predicted child symptoms, but only when paternal offspring reports were included in the model. Father support and adjustment difficulties among youth in residential care: The moderating role of peer victimization and gender.

Father support of young people living in out-of-home settings is a neglected area of research. The study examines the moderating role of peer victimization in the association between father support and adjustment difficulties among male and female adolescents in residential care settings. Using random cluster sampling, the study includes the reports of 1,409 young people, in Grades 8 to 12, residing in 16 Israeli educational residential care settings designed for youth from underprivileged backgrounds. The findings show that, on average, fathers are highly involved in these young people's live…

Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome: novel FLCN frameshift deletion in daughter and father with renal cell carcinomas.

Germline mutation of the FLCN gene causes Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome (BHD), a rare autosomal dominant condition characterized by skin fibrofolliculomas, lung cysts, spontaneous pneumothorax and renal tumours. We identified a hitherto unreported pathogenic FLCN frameshift deletion c.563delT (p.Phe188Serfs*35) in a family of a 46-year-old woman presented with macrohematuria due to bilateral chromophobe renal carcinomas. A heritable renal cancer was suspected due to the bilaterality of the tumour and as the father of this woman had suffered from renal cancer. Initially, however, BHD was overlooked b

'It's a bit too much fathering this seed': the meaning-making of the sperm donor in Italian lesbian mother families.

How do female-partnered mothers deal with the third-party involved in their reproductive arrangement? The aim of this study is to identify the meaning-making of the sperm donor, exploring different patterns between genetic and non-genetic mothers, as well as between open-identity and anonymous donation. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 24 Italian female-partnered mothers, who at the time of data collection had at least one donor-conceived child. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis was performed to identify emergent themes. None of the mothers considered the donor as the fath

Observed Mother- and Father-Child Interaction Differences in Families with Medically Assisted Reproduction-Conceived Twins and Singletons.

Increased medically assisted reproduction (MAR) use to treat infertility has resulted in a growing twin birth rate. Little is known about parent-child relationships for twin relative to singleton children in middle childhood. This study fills this gap by examining parent-child relationships in 57 families with eighty 6- to 12-year-old MAR twin and singleton children using observational data (warm and supportive communication, control, and hostility). Nested ANCOVAs indicate that while mothers exhibit similar interactional behaviors toward twins and singletons, fathers have less optimum behavio…

Anger in Adulthood in Participants Who Lost Their Father During the War in Croatia When They Were in Their Formative Age.

BACKGROUND: Loss of parents in early childhood can have serious long-term psychological consequences. Abandoned by a close figure of attachment, many persons have developed the emotion of anger, even though the separation was caused by death. The traumatic experience of the loss of a parent is particularly hard in war, because most often it does not occur as an individual trauma. Our aim is to research anger as a personality trait in persons whose father had died in war at a time when they were children, and to compare it with an appropriate civilian control group of subjects. SUBJECTS AND ME

Father Involvement and Young, Rural African American Men's Engagement in Substance Misuse and Multiple Sexual Partnerships.

This study was designed to examine the associations of biological father and social father involvement during childhood with African American young men's development and engagement in risk behaviors. With a sample of 505 young men living in the rural South of the United States, a dual mediation model was tested in which retrospective reports of involvement from biological fathers and social fathers were linked to young men's substance misuse and multiple sexual partnerships through men's relational schemas and future expectations. Results from structural equation modeling indicated that levels…

We examined the efficacy and safety of nucleoside analogues in preventing the vertical transmission of hepatitis B virus (HBV) from father to infant. We included 201 patients who visited the liver clinic of our hospital. The patients were positive for HBV surface antigen (HBsAg), HBeAg, anti-HBc, and HBV DNA; 189 patients (94%) had abnormal liver function. In all couples, the fathers were HBV DNA-negative and had normal liver function, and the mothers were anti-HB-positive before pregnancy. The control group comprised 188 couples who visited our hospital during the same time period. The father…

Multirater congruence on the social skills assessment of children with asperger syndrome: self, mother, father, and teacher ratings.

Children with Asperger Syndrome (AS) who attend mainstream settings face social skills deficits that have not been adequately explored. This study aims to examine social skills through self-reports of children with AS (N = 21) and a matched group of typically developing peers, as well as reports from their mothers, fathers, and teachers. Results showed that children with AS had more social skills deficits according to all raters and that they reported more aggressiveness/antisocial behavior, more conceit/haughtiness, more loneliness/social anxiety, and less assertiveness than controls. The lev…

A familial pattern of multiple idiopathic cervical root resorption in a father and son: a 22-year follow-up.

BACKGROUND: The etiology of idiopathic cervical root resorption has not been elucidated clearly. However, the process has been linked to trauma, intracanal bleaching, and partial-thickness connective tissue grafts. METHODS: This study describes a familial pattern of multiple idiopathic cervical root resorption in a father and son. RESULTS: The father was a healthy 63-year-old white male who presented with the first resorption lesion in 1983. Twenty-seven additional lesions were identified on 16 teeth over 22 years. Five teeth were lost as a result of extensive resorption. The son was a healt

[Spontaneous hemothorax from a fibrous pleural tumour in an expectant father. Is the delivery room a dangerous place for men?].

A 34-year-old male was admitted to our department with dyspnoea and severe pain in the left hemithorax. The symptoms had started suddenly three days before in the delivery room when his child was being born. An X-ray of the chest showed a tumour in the left side of the mediastinum and a large left pleural effusion. This was confirmed by CT, which revealed a round mass 11 cm in diameter. During the operation a benign solitary fibrous tumour was radically resected from the pleura and a large hemothorax was removed. This unusual presentation with severe bleeding from a pleural tumour was most pro

A familial case of achondrogenesis type II caused by a dominant COL2A1 mutation and "patchy" expression in the mosaic father.

Achondrogenesis type II (ACG2) is the most severe disorder that can be produced by dominant mutations in COL2A1. We report on four pregnancies of an apparently healthy, nonconsanguineous young couple. The father had scoliosis as a child, and has slight body disproportion with short trunk. The first child was born at 32 weeks and died neonatally. In the second pregnancy, short limbs and fetal hygroma were noted on ultrasound at 17 weeks' gestation. Similar findings were observed in the third fetus. Clinical, radiological, and histological evaluation of the fetuses after termination of the pregn
