[Development of feeding activities in dairy cows at the start of lactation and relation to the quantities of feed ingested].

Feeding behaviour was measured in 12 multiparous dairy cows all day long during the first 5 weeks of lactation. These cows received corn silage ad libitum and concentrates representing 21 to 27% of total dry matter intake, depending on the week. During the first week of lactation, total eating and ruminating times were 364 and 426 min; eating and ruminating rates were 39.0 and 32.5 g DM/min. The feed intake increase during the first 5 weeks of lactation was accompanied by an increase in ruminating time (+ 22%) and eating rate (+ 26%). These two parameters were very sensitive to short-time decr

Outcomes for high-risk neonates in a managed care clinical system.

The purpose of this study was to compare a conventional system and a managed care clinical system for the care of high-risk neonates. The variables selected for the comparison of these two systems included neurobehavioral organization as evidenced by feeding behaviors, length of stay, severity of illness, readmissions, and cost of care. The sample consisted of 260 neonates (111 in the conventional system, 149 in the managed care system). In addition, two neonatal diagnosis-related groups were selected: 386 (extreme immaturity) and 387 (prematurity with major problems). Findings showed that the…

Lateral hypothalamic neuropeptides in reward and drug addiction.

The hypothalamus has been long considered important in feeding and other motivated behaviors. The identification of neuropeptides expressed in the hypothalamus has initiated efforts to better elucidate the underlying molecular mechanisms involved. The neuropeptides orexin and melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH) are expressed in the lateral hypothalamus (LH) and have been implicated in regulation of feeding behavior. Neurons expressing these neuropeptides have extensive projections to regions of the brain important for behavioral responses to drugs of abuse, raising the possibility that the pat…

Responsive Feeding, Infant Growth, and Postpartum Depressive Symptoms During 3 Months Postpartum.

Responsive feeding is crucial to the formation of life-long healthy eating behavior. Few studies have examined maternal responsive feeding in early infancy among a Chinese population. This prospective study describes maternal responsive feeding and factors associated with maternal responsive feeding, with emphasis on infant growth and maternal depressive symptoms, during the first 3 months postpartum in Taiwan. From 2015 to 2017, 438 pregnant women were recruited and followed at 1 and 3 months postpartum. Maternal responsive feeding at 3 months was measured on a 10-item 5-point Likert-type sca

Do children with a Noonan syndrome-like RASopathy and avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder benefit from behavioral therapy?

UNLABELLED: Children with Noonan syndrome-like RASopathies are at increased risk for developing feeding problems due to comorbid organic impairments at an early age, such as gastrointestinal problems or other organicity. Their feeding problems can ultimately often be classified as avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder, for which behavioral therapy is the first-choice treatment. The research question in this study is whether this treatment leads to similar results as in children without these RASopathies. We retrospectively investigated patients with a genetically confirmed Noonan syndrome-

Effects of 6-meals-a-day feeding and 6-meals-a-day feeding combined with adrenalectomy on daily gene expression rhythms in rat epididymal white adipose tissue.

The master clock in the hypothalamic suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) is assumed to synchronize the tissue-specific rhythms of the peripheral clocks with the environmental day/night changes via neural, humoral and/or behavioral connections. The feeding rhythm is considered an important Zeitgeber for peripheral clocks, as daytime feeding reverses (clock) gene rhythms in the periphery, but not in the SCN. In this study, we investigated the necessity of a daily feeding rhythm for maintaining gene expression rhythms in epididymal white adipose tissue (eWAT). We showed that 7 of 9 rhythmic metabolic/a

Effects of Feeding-Related Peptides on Neuronal Oscillation in the Ventromedial Hypothalamus.

The ventromedial hypothalamus (VMH) plays an important role in feeding behavior, obesity, and thermoregulation. The VMH contains glucose-sensing neurons, the firing of which depends on the level of extracellular glucose and which are involved in maintaining the blood glucose level via the sympathetic nervous system. The VMH also expresses various receptors of the peptides related to feeding. However, it is not well-understood whether the action of feeding-related peptides mediates the activity of glucose-sensing neurons in the VMH. In the present study, we examined the effects of feeding-relat…

[Involvement of orexins/hypocretins in multiple physiological functions].

Orexins (orexin-A and orexin-B)/hipocretins (hypocretin-1 and hypocretin-2) are novel neuropetides discovered in 1998. Orexin-producing neurons are exclusively distributed in the lateral hypothalamic area (LHA), the posterior hypothalamic area and the perifornical nucleus in rats. The LHA is known to be a feeding center in the hypothalamus. Central administration of orexins stimulated feeding in rats and mice. Therefore, orexins are recognized as potent orexigenic peptides. In a positional cloning study, genetically narcoleptic dogs had a deletion of the orexin receptor 2 gene, resulting in a

Diverse development and higher sensitivity of the circadian clocks to changes in maternal-feeding regime in a rat model of cardio-metabolic disease.

Spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) develop cardiovascular and metabolic pathology in adulthood when their circadian system exhibits significant aberrances compared with healthy control rats. This study was aimed to elucidate how the SHR circadian system develops during ontogenesis and to assess its sensitivity to changes in maternal-feeding regime. Analysis of ontogenesis of clock gene expression rhythms in the suprachiasmatic nuclei, liver and colon revealed significant differences in SHR compared with Wistar rats. In the suprachiasmatic nuclei of the hypothalamus (SCN) and liver, the deve

Inverted day-night feeding during pregnancy affects the brain health of both maternal and fetal brains through increasing inflammation levels associated with dysbiosis of the gut microbiome in rats.

BACKGROUND: In both humans and rodents, inappropriate feeding times during pregnancy can cause maternal metabolic abnormalities, increasing the risk of neurodevelopmental disorders in both the mother and offspring. Using a rat model, this study investigates whether feeding only during the inactive phase in rats leads to anxiety-like behaviors and abnormal brain development in fetuses through gut microbiota imbalance. METHODS: 10-week-old female rats in the inactive-phase feeding group (IF group) were first trained for daytime feeding, ensuring that energy intake was statistically insignifican

Case Report of Changes in Breastfeeding and Alcohol Consumption During the First 6 Months.

This longitudinal case report describes a mother-infant dyad, focusing on how early pacifier use, scheduled feeding, and postpartum alcohol resumption affected breastfeeding behavior and infant growth. Pacifier use and scheduled feeding decreased breast stimulation and suckling frequency. Alcohol resumption at 3 weeks, initiation of pumping at 7 weeks, and increased consumption, coinciding with menses, likely accelerated an existing decline in milk supply and suboptimal infant weight gain. These challenges required formula supplementation and metoclopramide. Alcohol use paused at 17 weeks duri…

A global perspective on feeding assessment in the neonatal intensive care unit.

A comprehensive assessment of feeding performance of infants in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) includes not only the traditional approaches of evaluating oral motor control and sensory responses but also evaluation of other factors. Infant feeding is a highly complex and integrated process involving numerous body systems. A global assessment would determine the infant's feeding function in the key areas of state and behavior, tactile responses, motoric control, oral motor function, physiologic control, and coordination of sucking, swallowing, and breathing. Information is obtained thr

Continuous sucrose feeding decreases pain threshold and increases morphine potency.

Although an opioid-mediated mechanism appears to be involved in the alteration of pain perception during feeding behavior, little is known about macronutrient effects on nociception. In this report we show that prolonged sucrose feeding alters responsiveness to painful stimuli and the analgesic potency of morphine. Male Sprague-Dawley rats maintained on ad lib laboratory chow with continuous access to a 20% sucrose solution displayed a significant decrease in tail-flick latency as early as 20 hours after introduction of the sucrose. The differences in pain threshold were naloxone sensitive. Af…

Dietary Behavior and Risk of Orthorexia in Women with Celiac Disease.

Evidence points to a link between celiac disease and eating disorders. Although with the current limited knowledge, orthorexia cannot be formally recognized as an eating disorder, some features are similar. This study is the first to examine individuals with celiac disease in terms of the prevalence of risk of orthorexia. Participants were 123 females diagnosed with celiac disease. The standardized ORTO-15 questionnaire was used to assess the risk of orthorexia. In this study, eating habits and physical activity were assessed. The effect of celiac disease on diet was self-assessed on a 5-point

Prevalence of orthorexia nervosa is less than 1 %: data from a US sample.

PURPOSE: Orthorexia nervosa, or pathological dieting based on being "healthy," has been of growing interest. Clinical data are limited to less than a half-dozen case studies reporting instances of medical problems due to healthful eating. However, more than a dozen studies using a measure to identify orthorexia, the ORTO-15, report very high prevalence rates in non-clinical samples. Point prevalence rates are reported from 6 % to nearly 90 %. Such variability could be due to cultural issues or psychometric problems with the instrument. This study examines prevalence rate of orthorexia in a US

Dairy cows increase ingestive mastication and reduce ruminative chewing when grazing chicory and plantain.

Although the nutritive value of chicory (Cichorium intybus L.) and plantain (Plantago lanceolata L.) has been thoroughly studied, little is known about the grazing behavior of cattle feeding on chicory and plantain swards. The objective of the present study was to assess and describe the grazing behavior of dairy cows as affected by dietary proportions of chicory and plantain fed as monocultures for part of the day. Ninety Holstein-Friesian cows (489±42 kg of body weight; 4.1±0.3 body condition score, and 216±15 d in milk) were randomly assigned to 15 groups (6 cows per group) and grazed accor

Body image and eating behavior in adolescents.

Approximately two-thirds of adolescent girls at any age are dissatisfied with their weight, the proportion increasing with actual weight. Slightly more than half of all girls are dissatisfied with the shape of their bodies, an attitude which also is positively correlated with body weight. Girls are most likely to be distressed about excess size of their thighs, hips, waist and buttocks, and inadequate size of their breasts. Those who are dissatisfied with their bodies are more likely to engage in potentially harmful weight control behaviors, such as dieting, fasting, self-induced vomiting, diu

Animal behavior and pasture depletion in a pasture-based automatic milking system.

In pasture-based automatic milking systems (AMS), feed is the main incentive that can be managed to encourage reliable and consistent voluntary and distributed cow traffic. Modifying timing, placement and size of feed allocations is expected to have an effect on cow behavior that could avoid the occurrence of extended milking intervals, which have a negative effect on milk yield. Therefore, behavioral studies provide information on how cows modify their actions under different management regimes and can help explain the impact of those regimes. Behavioral observations were conducted in spring
