Fetal ascites is a non-specific finding which can be associated with fetal hydrops or an isolated intra-abdominal cause. We describe a case of fetal ascites associated with an intra-abdominal mass suspected to be ovarian in nature and diagnosed in the third trimester. The mother developed maternal mirror syndrome, previously reported to be associated with fetal hydrops but not reported in cases of isolated fetal ascites. Neonatal laparoscopy revealed the left ovary was oedematous and enlarged next to an inflamed and oedematous deep ring suggesting a previously incarcerated ovarian inguinal her

ABSTRACT: Viral infections are associated with early pregnancy loss and later gestational complications, including preeclampsia and fetal growth restriction. While viral components, including viral double-stranded RNA (dsRNA), have been shown to affect placental trophoblast function, how these components may affect maternal endometrial function is less understood. Endometrial stromal cells make up the bulk of the human endometrium, and they undergo a specialized hormone-driven differentiation process termed decidualization, monthly in preparation for pregnancy. We have previously shown that th

Micro(nano)plastics (MNPs), are emerging environmental pollutants that have garnered widespread attention. Epidemiological and animal studies have shown that MNPs exposure during pregnancy is associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes, such as intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) and miscarriage. However, the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. In this study, we found that exposure to a high dose (1 μg·mL-1) of 100 nm polystyrene nanoparticles (NPs) from gestational day (GD) 0 to GD17 significantly decreased fetal weight and increased the number of resorptions compared to the con

OBJECTIVES: The objective was to develop an artificial intelligence (AI)-based system, using deep neural network (DNN) technology, to automatically detect standard fetal planes during video capture, measure fetal biometry parameters and estimate fetal weight.
METHODS: A standard plane recognition DNN was trained to classify ultrasound images into four categories: head circumference (HC), abdominal circumference (AC), femur length (FL) standard planes, or 'other'. The recognized standard plane images were subsequently processed by three fetal biometry DNNs, automatically measuring HC, AC and F

PURPOSE: The retina is part of the central nervous system, and its function is vision. During the embryonic development of the fetus, it diversifies the seven major types of cells from a retinal progenitor cell. The purpose of this study is to investigate essential features that are necessary for the development of the fetal retina.
METHODS: We generated a comprehensive single-cell transcriptional atlas of the human retina by leveraging datasets from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative Single-Cell Biology collection of human fetal retinas. The eight critical types of retinal cells were investigate

Initial gastrointestinal endocrine cells (GIECs) likely appear at the proximal and distal sites of abdominal intestines and may take a close topographical relation with neural elements in the gut. We examined immunohistochemically-stained sections from 10 fetuses at approximately 8-18 weeks of gestational age (36-155 mm of crown-rump length). Irrespective of whether physiological herniation was present (early 5 specimens) or absent (the other 5), the duodenum and jejunum had well-developed mucosa with villi containing abundant flask-like chromogranin-positive cells. In the earlier 5 specimens,

Gonadal sex determination in mice is a complex and dynamic process, which is crucial for the development of functional reproductive organs. The expression of genes involved in this process is regulated by a variety of genetic and epigenetic mechanisms. Recently, there has been increasing evidence that transposable elements (TEs), which are a class of mobile genetic elements, play a significant role in regulating gene expression during embryogenesis and organ development. In this study, we aimed to investigate the involvement of TEs in the regulation of gene expression during mouse embryonic go

The ubiquitous presence of phthalate compounds in cosmetics, personal care products and plastics commonly used in toys, food packaging or household products, results in human exposure with adverse effects on reproductive health and fetal development. Following the PRISMA methodology, this systematic review analyzes the effect of prenatal phthalate exposure on major pregnancy complications, such as gestational diabetes, pregnancy-induced hypertension, fetal growth restriction and preterm birth, and its role in fetal neurodevelopment. This review includes >100 articles published in the last 10 y…

The aim of this study was to assess the effect of continued smoking before and during pregnancy on mid-trimester fetal head development. A total of 250 pregnant women enrolled in the study. All participants were confirmed to be smokers or non-smokers by verifying breath carbon monoxide readings. Biparietal diameter (BPD), head circumference (HC), lateral ventricle (LV), and cisterna magna (CM) were evaluated by ultrasound between 20-22 weeks of pregnancy. Gender and gestational age-adjusted BPD z- scores were not statistically different between smokers and non-smokers (-0.75 ± 1.6 vs -0.51 ± 1

The use of in vitro produced embryos in dairy and beef cattle has increased in recent years, but compromised post-transfer pregnancy success prevents producers from capturing all the benefits this technology can provide. This study explored whether supplementing interleukin-6 (IL6) during in vitro embryo development influences post-transfer development of the embryo-proper, fetus and placenta during early gestation in cattle. Slaughterhouse-derived cumulus oocyte complexes underwent IVM (day -1) and IVF (day 0). On day 5 post-fertilization, embryos were treated with either 0 (CONT) or 100 ng/m

The amniotic fluid (AF) is a complex biofluid that reflects fetal well-being during development. AF con be divided into two fractions, the supernatant and amniocytes. The supernatant contains cell-free components, including placenta-derived microparticles, protein, cell-free fetal DNA, and cell-free fetal RNA from the fetus. Cell-free mRNA (cfRNA) analysis holds a special position among high-throughput analyses, such as transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics, owing to its ease of profiling. The AF cell-free transcriptome differs from the amniocyte transcriptome and alters with the progr

BACKGROUND: Assessments of cortical development and identifying factors that may result in a poor prognosis for fetuses with isolated mild ventriculomegaly (IMVM) is a hot research topic. We aimed to perform a constant, detailed assessment of cortical development in IMVM fetuses using ultrasound and determine whether asymmetric cortical development occurred. Moreover, we aimed to estimate the prognosis of IMVM fetuses and compare the difference in the prognosis of IMVM fetuses presenting symmetric and asymmetric cortical maturation.
METHODS: IMVM was diagnosed by regular ultrasound, neurosono

Tobacco smoke is a common global environmental pollutant. Maternal tobacco smoke/nicotine exposure has long-term toxic effects on immune organs. We previously found that prenatal nicotine exposure (PNE)-induced programmed immune diseases caused by fetal thymic hypoplasia, but the mechanism still unknown. Autophagy has important functions in maintaining thymopoiesis, whether autophagy was involved in PNE-inhibited fetal thymocytes development is also obscure. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate how nicotine changed the development of fetal thymocytes from the perspective of autophagy in

Maternal immune activation (MIA) caused by exposure to pathogens or inflammation during critical periods of neurodevelopment is a major risk factor for behavioral deficits and psychiatric illness in offspring. A spectrum of behavioral abnormalities can be recapitulated in rodents by inducing MIA using the viral mimetic, PolyI:C. Many studies have focused on long-term changes in brain structure and behavioral outcomes in offspring following maternal PolyI:C exposure, but acute changes in prenatal development are not well-characterized. Using RNA-Sequencing, we profiled acute transcriptomic chan

To date there have been no studies that describe the ultrasonographic evaluation of kidney development in canine fetuses. The aim of this prospective and longitudinal study was to monitor fetal kidney development with ultrasound and use fetal kidney measurements as a complementary biometric index for estimation of gestational age. Ultrasonographic examinations were performed on 15 clinically healthy pregnant bitches every four days from 30th day of pregnancy, until visualization of the fetal renal pelvis was no longer possible. Four distinct periods of ultrasonographic canine fetal kidney deve

In this paper, we introduce our novel renal subcapsular xenograft model for the study of human penile urethral and clitoral development. We grafted fifteen intact fetal penes and clitorides 8-11 weeks fetal age under the renal capsules of gonadectomized athymic mice. The mice were treated with a subcutaneous pellet of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), diethylstilbestrol (DES) or untreated with hormones. Xenografts were harvested after fourteen days of growth and analyzed via serial histologic sectioning and immunostaining for Ki-67, cytokeratins 6, 7 and 10, uroplakin and the androgen receptor. Pre-eclampsia affects approximately 5% of all pregnant women and remains a major cause of maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. The hypertension associated with pre-eclampsia develops during pregnancy and remits after delivery, suggesting that the placenta is the most likely origin of this disease. The pathophysiology involves insufficient trophoblast invasion, resulting in incomplete narrow placental spiral artery remodeling. Placental insufficiency, which limits the maternal-fetal exchange of gas and nutrients, leads to fetal intrauterine growth restriction. In this study, in our attem
