At our institution, PLV continues to be used as an investigational therapy for patients with ARDS who meet the protocol criteria. Since this is the beginning of the first nonneonatal clinical trial of PLV, results of this therapy are not yet available. Adverse effects on hemodynamic parameters have not been documented in the current literature for patients treated with liquid ventilation. In addition, further clinical studies using PLV therapy will be necessary to determine whether it will significantly change the morbidity and mortality of ARDS in infants or adults. Other questions to be answ

Perfluorochemical (PFC) liquids have great potential for biomedical use and the support of respiration. Currently, there are several commercially available PFC fluids which meet the physiochemical property requirements as well as purity specifications necessary to perform many of the discussed biomedical applications. Moreover, state-of-the-art fluorine chemistry should enable production of new PFC liquids uniquely sculptured relative to the proposed specific application (ie. vehicle for pulmonary delivery of drugs, a diluent for pulmonary lavage, a medium for respiratory gas exchange). In add

Low viscosity perfluorocarbon liquids have unique physical properties making them ideal for the temporary tamponade, mechanical fixation, and manipulation of the retina. These substances are optically clear, have a specific gravity greater than that of water, and have interfacial tension properties similar to those of silicone oil. The temporary mechanical fixation of the retina by perfluorocarbon liquids facilitates the removal of epiretinal membranes and release of tractional forces. Intraoperative flattening of the retina under perfluorocarbon liquid eliminates the need for a posterior reti

The preliminary experience of one surgeon, using pneumatic retinopexy for 20 consecutive cases of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment, was previously reported. The collaborative experience of six surgeons using pneumatic retinopexy for 100 cases is now reported. This series includes cases with pseudophakia, aphakia, macular detachment, macular breaks, vitreous hemorrhage, trauma, and old detachments. Initially, 91% were reattached, but seven recurrences yielded a 6-month follow-up cure rate of 84% with pneumatic retinopexy. With subsequent scleral buckling, 98% were reattached. Postoperative com

Release tags are novel compounds made up of three molecular groups: "signal," "release," and "reactivity." The signal group is the detected part of the tag, the release group provides a site for specific covalent cleavage, and the reactivity group attaches the tag to a substance of interest. The general purpose of release tags is to function as molecular labels, analogous to radioisotopes. Release tags also extend the applicability of gas-phase electrophores as signal groups to the analysis of nonvolatile substances. These electrophores are measured with high sensitivity and specificity by gas

Two sets of prerequisites for nonionic emulsifiers suitable for an artificial blood program are suggested; one set that is necessary and a supplemental set that is desirable. Of the commercially available emulsifiers, only one, poloxamer 188, meets all of the requirements of the first group, and also meets most of the prerequisites of the second group. The hydrophile-lipophile balance system, its relation to emulsifier structure, and its value in arriving at the optimum emulsifier system, are discussed. The ability of the poloxamer 188 to serve as a plasma expander is attributed to its unusual

Maternal-fetal exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) cannot be adequately characterized using single biological matrices because compound-specific distribution patterns vary according to physicochemical properties and elimination pathways. We measured 33 legacy, precursor, and emerging PFAS in maternal serum, plasma, urine, and cord serum from Korean singleton pregnancies (n = 151) to characterize matrix-specific exposure profiles, transplacental transfer, and associations with maternal and neonatal factors. Matrix-specific detection patterns distinguished predominantly protei

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are persistent environmental pollutants associated with public health risks. The cardiac electrophysiological effects of the representative long-chain PFAS perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and short-chain PFASs such as heptafluorobutyric acid (HFBA) and hexafluoropropylene oxide dimer acid (HFPO-DA) remain insufficiently understood. In this study, the electrophysiological effects of PFASs were evaluated in human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes (hiPSC-CMs) using multielectrode array (MEA) analysis. Exposure to 100 μM PFOA increased b

The ubiquitous coexistence of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and heavy metals (HMs) in sludge restricts its resource utilization through vermicomposting. Biochar-based adsorbents are mixed with sludge to improve its vermicomposting effectiveness, yet their potential for PFOA and HMs stabilization remains unexplored. In this study, iron-modified biochar (Fe-BC) was used to enhance simultaneous stabilization of PFOA and HMs during vermicomposting of sludge. The sludge mixed with 0% (VC), 1% (V1), 3% (V3), and 5% (V5) of Fe-BC was separately vermicomposted by Eisenia fetida. The results showed hig

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are widely recognized soil and groundwater contaminants of global concerns. Beyond directly compromising groundwater quality, PFAS may alter the fate and transport of coexisting contaminants, posing additional ecological and human health risks. In this study, we demonstrate that PFAS elevate the risk of colloid-facilitated contaminant transport in groundwater. Specifically, perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), one of the most commonly detected PFAS in groundwater, increases the mobility of three soil colloids (Entisol, Inceptisol, and Mollisol), thereby

Ferroptosis, an iron-driven form of programmed cell death characterized by lipid peroxidation and reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation, is essential for tissue homeostasis and tumor suppression, yet its regulation in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) under environmental pollutant exposure remains unclear. Here, using long-term in vitro and in vivo exposure models with environmentally relevant doses combined with multiomics analyses, we show that per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) exert antithetical effects in HCC and normal hepatocytes. Whereas PFAS promote ferroptosis in normal cel

Human hair is a promising noninvasive biomonitoring matrix; however, its utility for retrospectively predicting exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) is not well understood, especially regarding quantitative associations and temporal mapping between hair with internal and external exposure. In this panel study, 24 females in South China were followed over 2 years, during which 131 hair samples (segmented into 1-4, 5-8, and 9-12 cm sections), 131 serum samples, and 122 dust samples were collected. Thirty-one PFAS congeners were analyzed, and PFAS exposure profiles differed acro

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) accumulate in breast milk and pose a distinct hazard to breastfed infants, whose immature renal clearance substantially prolongs internal PFAS half-lives. We developed a two-compartment physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) model incorporating a postnatal glomerular filtration rate (GFR) maturation function to estimate individual-level infant blood PFAS concentrations from breast milk ingestion, and applied it to two prospective Korean birth cohorts (Cohort A: n = 221, 2018; Cohort B: n = 204, 2023). Five PFAS─perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDeA), pe

Poly- and perfluoroalkyl substance use in commercial products and industrial applications has resulted in widespread and persistent environmental contamination. Terrestrial and aquatic vertebrates accumulate poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances in liver tissue, potentially inducing hepatotoxicity. The present study investigated tissue-level and molecular effects in the livers of male zebrafish (Danio rerio) exposed for two generations to perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS). Histopathology and transcriptomic expression analysis (RNA sequencing) were performed for males exposed to PFOS at a contr

BACKGROUND: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are highly persistent and bioaccumulative chemicals used in numerous industrial applications, including aqueous film-forming foams (AFFF). Human PFAS exposure has been linked to dyslipidemia, reduced vaccine antibody responses, developmental effects and potential carcinogenicity.
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether firefighters with frequent occupational AFFF contact exhibit higher internal PFAS concentrations than firefighters with little or no foam exposure.
METHODS: In this observational study, 140 professional and avocational firefighter
