[Biochemical indicators of vitamin provision to Orenburg's schoolchildren and effectiveness of prophylactic vitamin administration].

The study of providing with vitamins of schoolchildren in Orenburg conducted in the spring of 1985-1986 has revealed decreased content of ascorbic acid in 92%, vitamin E in 62%, vitamin A in 39%, folic acid in 38%, vitamin B12 in 14% of the children, the incidence rate of vitamin deficiency among the children in the senior forms was higher as compared to that in the junior forms and in boys it was more frequent than in girls. Additional intake of multivitamin "Undevitum" by schoolchildren during 2-4 months led to a significant improvement of their providing with vitamins that was expressed in

Vitamin E deficiency in phrynoderma cases from Sri Lanka.

Phrynoderma cases were identified in a village close to Colombo in Sri Lanka. The alpha-tocopherol level in plasma was 3.3 +/- 0.6 mumol/L among the phrynoderma patients (n = 11) and 13.0 +/- 2.3 mumol/L among the control subjects (p less than 0.002). A test on glutathione reductase activity in erythrocytes revealed a stronger riboflavin deficiency among patients than among control subjects (p less than 0.005). No significant differences were found between the groups with regard to plasma levels of retinol, retinol-binding protein, vitamin B-12, folic acid, thiamin, selenium, zinc, or essentia

Is it time for vitamin B-12 fortification? What are the questions?

Since the introduction of folic acid fortification of flour 10 y ago, an initiative to consider fortifying flour with vitamin B-12 has gained momentum in the United States. The impetus for this move stems from several considerations, including some evidence that a proportion of neural tube defect pregnancies may be the result of vitamin B-12 rather than folate deficiency. However, no interventional trials have taken place to show the efficacy of vitamin B-12 supplementation or fortification in the primary prevention or recurrence of neural tube defect pregnancies, as was the case with folic ac

Nutritional anemia in alcoholism.

Megaloblastic anemia due to folate deficiency, the result of dietary lack and a weak antifolate action of ethanol, is the most common cause of a low hematocrit in hospitalized alcoholics. Alcoholism in the absence of significant folate depletion is more commonly responsible for macrocytosis, however. Neutrophil hypersegmentation, which typically persists or worsens during the first 1 to 2 weeks of folic acid therapy, is a useful sign of folate depletion. Serum folate concentrations, however, are often misleading. During conversion of the megaloblastic marrow following hospitalization, giant ba

Assessment of Micronutrient Deficiencies in Exclusively Breastfed Infants: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background/Objectives: Micronutrient deficiencies during infancy remain a major public health concern, particularly in developing countries. Although exclusive breastfeeding is the optimal source of nutrition for infants up to six months of age, limited studies have simultaneously evaluated multiple micronutrient statuses in this population. This study aimed to assess the levels of vitamin D, iron, and other micronutrients-including vitamins A, E, B12, folic acid, zinc, and copper-in exclusively breastfed infants. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted between 2022 and 2024 at a uni

High dietary micronutrient inadequacy in peri-urban school children from a district in South India: Potential for staple food fortification and nutrient supplementation.

Multiple micronutrient deficiencies (MNDs) co-exist, often because of poor intakes and adversely impact health. Habitual diets were assessed in 300 school children (6-17 years old) recruited from two government schools by simple random sampling. Probability of adequacy (PA) for 11 micronutrients and mean probability of adequacy (MPA) was calculated. Haemoglobin, plasma ferritin, folic acid, vitamin B12 and C-reactive protein were estimated. Descriptive statistics and regression analysis were used to estimate magnitude and factors associated with MNDs. The contribution of fortified foods and/or

Hematinic deficiencies and anemia statuses in anti-gastric parietal cell antibody-positive or all autoantibodies-negative erosive oral lichen planus patients.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Approximately 27% of erosive oral lichen planus (EOLP) patients have serum anti-gastric parietal cell antibody (GPCA) positivity. This study assessed whether serum GPCA or EOLP itself was a significant factor that caused hematinic deficiencies and anemia statuses in GPCA-positive or autoantibodies-negative EOLP patients (GPCA+/EOLP and Abs-/EOLP patients). METHODS: The mean corpuscular volume (MCV) and mean blood hemoglobin (Hb), iron, vitamin B12, and folic acid levels were measured and compared between any two of three groups of 41 GPCA+/EOLP patients, 198 Abs-/EOLP pati

Unraveling Gender Differences in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: A Focus on Key Micronutrients.

Introduction Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a persistent psychiatric condition that causes significant clinical and functional impairments. Recent research suggests a link between deficiencies in micronutrients, particularly vitamin B12, folic acid, and elevated homocysteine, and the development of OCD. This study investigates the blood levels of these micronutrients and their relationship to OCD severity, with an emphasis on potential gender differences. Methods This cross-sectional study included 300 drug-free OCD patients. Serum levels of vitamin B12, folic acid, and homocysteine we

Research goals for folate and related B vitamin in Europe.

In the past decade, the understanding of folate bioavailability, metabolism and related health issues has increased, but several problems remain, including the difficulty of delivering the available knowledge to the populations at risk. Owing to the low compliance of taking folic acid supplements, for example, among women of child-bearing age who could lower the risk of having a baby with a neural tube defect, food-based strategies aimed at increasing the intake of folate and other B-group vitamins should be a priority for future research. These should include the development of a combined str

[Tropical sprue].

Tropical sprue associates prolonged diarrhea, a malabsorption syndrome, and nutritional deficiency in patients who live in or have visited tropical areas. Pathogenesis is still unknown but an infectious cause is suspected. Macrocytic anemia and hypoalbuminemia are present, together with progressive villus atrophy of the small intestine. Treatment with tetracycline, folic acid and proper nutritional support generally results in full recovery.

Association of MTHFR and RFC1 gene polymorphism with hyperhomocysteinemia and its modulation by vitamin B12 and folic acid in an Indian population.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Unlike most Western populations, MTHFR 677T is a rare allele and a risk factor for a variety of disorders in India. What kind of nutritional (environmental) and/or genetic factors could contribute to the genetic risk is not known. To assess the incidence of hyperhomocysteinemia and its correlation with the polymorphism in homocysteine (Hcy)-pathway genes and associated cofactors in the native populations of eastern India. Candidate noninfectious disease conditions.

Important micronutrient deficiencies in at-risk populations can be addressed simultaneously with programmatically cost-effective results. Because of the interaction between many micronutrients, this would also be biologically effective. With adequate investment and political support, the chances of eliminating iodine deficiency as a problem in women of reproductive age and young children and of eliminating vitamin A deficiency as a problem in young children in the future are high. To eliminate iron deficiency and folic-acid-dependent neural tube defects (FADNTDs) in low-income populations, a n

Relation between Cerebrospinal Fluid Catecholamines and Vascular Risk Factors, Thyroid Function and Vitamins in Healthy Individuals and Patients with Neurodegenerative Diseases.

INTRODUCTION: The locus coeruleus is the primary site of norepinephrine (NE) synthesis in the brain. Its dysfunction has been implicated in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease. Vascular risk factors, thyroid dysfunction, and vitamin deficiencies have also been associated with an increased risk of dementia. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between the catecholaminergic system-by measuring cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) levels of L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA), dopamine (DA), and NE-and vascular risk factors, thyroid dysfunction, and vitamin deficiencies. METHODS: We conducte

Prenatal folate deficiency impairs sociability and memory/recognition in mice offspring.

Folate is essential for the normal growth and development of the fetus. Folic acid supplementation during the fetal period affects postnatal brain development and reduces the incidence of mental disorders in animal and human studies. However, the association between folate deficiency (FD) during pregnancy and developmental disorders in children remains poorly understood. In this study, we investigated whether prenatal FD is associated with neurodevelopmental disorders in offspring. ICR mice were fed a control diet (2 mg folic acid/kg diet) or a folate-deficient diet (0.3 mg folic acid/kg diet)

A prophylactic trial of iron and folic acid supplements in pregnant Burmese women.

Hemoglobin (Hb) concentration, serum iron level, iron binding capacity and blood folate (Lactobacillus casei) activity were determined in 310 unselected pregnant Burmese women. Hb concentration was less than 11 g/dl in 72% of the women; the serum iron level was less than 50 mug/dl in 33%; serum folate activity was less than 3ng/ml in 13%; and red cell folate activity was less than 100 ng/ml in 17% of the women. Ninety-six of the women in our study were randomly divided into four groups, treated from the 22nd to the 25th week of pregnancy until full term with either ferrous sulfate containing 6

Folic acid supplementation ameliorates alcohol-induced hepatic steatosis by inhibiting SREBP-1c-mediated lipogenesis.

BACKGROUND: Alcoholic fatty liver disease (AFLD), a prevalent yet reversible stage of alcoholic liver pathology, is often associated with folate deficiency. This study investigated the association between folate status and AFLD risk and explored the underlying mechanisms. METHODS: Data from NHANES 2011-2020 (n = 10,452; 259 with AFLD) were analyzed. Associations between dietary folate equivalent (DFE), serum folate, 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF), red blood cell (RBC) folate, and AFLD were evaluated using multivariable logistic regression, adjusting for demographic and clinical variables.

Valproate and folate: Congenital and developmental risks.

Increasing awareness of the congenital and developmental risks associated with the use of sodium valproate (VPA) has led to recent European guidelines designed to avoid the use of this drug in pregnancy if effective alternative treatments are available. In the general population, it is well established that periconceptual folic acid reduces the risk of neural tube defects (NTDs) and possibly other congenital abnormalities. We here review the evidence 1) that VPA interferes with one-carbon metabolism, including the transport of methylfolate into the brain and the placenta by targeting folate re
