Sodium values of Chinese condiments and their use in sodium-restricted diets.

Counseling a Chinese patient on a low-sodium diet can be an arduous task for the dietitian. Special consideration of cultural beliefs, food preferences, and food practices must be incorporated into the individualized instruction. Equally important is the need for familiarity with the sodium values of frequently consumed foods and condiments indigenous to the Chinese population. To date, published sodium determinations for such items are quite limited. Representative samples of commonly used Chinese seasonings and sauces were collected. Analysis was performed by Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy. …

Characterization of operant social interaction in rats: effects of access duration, effort, peer familiarity, housing conditions, and choice between social interaction vs. food or remifentanil.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVE: Social factors play a critical role in drug addiction. We recently showed that rats will abstain from methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin, and remifentanil self-administration when given a choice between the addictive drug and operant social interaction. Here, we further characterized operant social interaction by determining the effects of access duration, effort, peer familiarity, and housing conditions. We also determined choice between social interaction vs. palatable food or remifentanil. METHODS: We first trained single-housed male and female rats to lever-press fo

Dietary aspects of pregnant women in rural areas of Northern India.

The aim of this article is to document the current dietary profile of pregnant women in rural areas of Delhi. In order to explore the diet the combination of quantitative (24-h recall method) and qualitative methods (food frequency method) were used. The mean intake of macronutrients and micronutrients, namely, iron, folic acid and Vitamin C which play an important role in the pathophysiology of nutritional anaemia during pregnancy was calculated from the foodstuffs, using Nutritive Value of Indian Foods. The preferences and avoidance of various foods by the pregnant women were also elicited.

Searching beneath the shelf in macaque monkeys: evidence for a gravity bias or a foraging bias?

The reasons underpinning search biases in 2 species of macaque monkeys (Macaca mulatta and Macaca arctoides) were explored over the course of 3 experiments requiring monkeys to search for a hidden food reward. The results reveal that monkeys are adept at exploiting perceptual cues to locate a food reward but are unable to use physical constraints such as solidity as cues to the reward's location. Monkeys prefer to search for a food reward beneath a solid shelf, not because they have an expectation that the reward should be there, but rather because, in the absence of usable cues, this bias eme

Does acute or habitual protein deprivation influence liking for monosodium glutamate?

The umami flavour generated by monosodium glutamate (MSG) has been proposed as the marker for the presence of protein in foods. As protein is the most closely regulated macronutrient in the diet, the present study addressed whether acute protein deprivation, habitual protein intake or a combination of the two influenced liking for the taste of MSG. 24 low-restraint male participants (mean age: 22; BMI: 23) consumed either their habitual breakfast (baseline), a low protein breakfast (breakfast meal with low protein milk and milkshake) or a high protein breakfast (breakfast meal with high protei

Combined naloxone and fluoxetine on deprivation-induced binge eating of palatable foods in rats.

Opioid antagonism and serotonergic stimulation is associated with macronutrient-specific hypophagia in animals. In the present study we evaluated their systemic effect alone, and in combination, at various doses, on the intake of sweet carbohydrate-rich and sweet fat-rich foods, tastes, and nutrients that are typical of binge-food items. Low-dose (1 mg/kg) naloxone, alone, preferentially suppressed fat-rich intake while low-dose (2.5 mg/kg) fluoxetine, alone, preferentially suppressed carbohydrate-rich intake. Each drug at these doses, combined with various doses of the other (2.5-10 mg/kg flu

Risky decision-making is associated with impulsive action and sensitivity to first-time nicotine exposure.

Excessive risk-taking is common in multiple psychiatric conditions, including substance use disorders. The risky decision-making task (RDT) models addiction-relevant risk-taking in rats by measuring preference for a small food reward vs. a large food reward associated with systematically increasing risk of shock. Here, we examined the relationship between risk-taking in the RDT and multiple addiction-relevant phenotypes. Risk-taking was associated with elevated impulsive action, but not impulsive choice or habit formation. Furthermore, risk-taking predicted locomotor sensitivity to first-time

Approach to patients with symptoms of food allergy.

"Allergy" is a term often used by patients to describe symptoms that arise after eating. The term "adverse reaction to food" is preferred unless the event has an immunologic basis. True food allergy, primarily mediated by immunoglobulin (Ig)E antibodies to food proteins, is present in 3% to 4% of US adults. Symptoms range from mild mouth itching ("oral allergy syndrome") to anaphylaxis. The diagnosis is established by history and appropriately performed skin testing or in vitro assays for specific IgE antibodies to the suspected food. Because food-allergic reactions can be fatal, it is importa

Human diet and cognition.

UNLABELLED: Cognition influences what, when and how much we eat, which in turn affects the brain and hence cognition. In this overview, focusing mainly on the human literature, we start by examining cognitive influences on food and eating. This includes food preferences and choices (e.g., effects of learning, advertising, and cultural taboos), food habits relating to when and how much to eat (e.g., the concept of meals, dieting, and hunger strikes), the perception of food (e.g., the influence of appearance, food labels, and conceptions of naturalness), and how food perception is influenced by …

Development of new measures to assess household nutrition security, and choice in dietary characteristics.

The purpose of this study was to preliminarily develop novel self-administered measures to assess nutrition security and choice in dietary characteristics. Measures were piloted in a convenience sample of households at risk for food insecurity in the United States. The survey included the new measures, construct validation variables (household food security, self-reported general health, and dietary variables), and demographic questions. Exploratory factor analysis was used to assess dimensionality, internal (Cronbach's alpha (CA)), and construct validity were assessed (Spearman's correlation)

Oral processing behavior and dental caries; an insight into a new relationship.

INTRODUCTION: Previous evidence suggests an individual variation in the preferred oral processing behavior. Individuals can be classified as firm processing(FPL) or soft processing likers(SPL). FPL(crunchers and chewers) prefer using their teeth while SPL(smooshers and suckers) prefer using the tongue and the palate when processing different food items. Variation in the preferred oral processing behavior has been associated with differences in food texture preference and eating time. Time is one of the factors directly related to the development of dental caries(tooth decay). Oral retention an

Brain and behavioural responses to food viewing in women during pregnancy and their relationship with metabolic health: study protocol for the FOODY Play Study - a prospective observational study.

INTRODUCTION: During pregnancy, physiological and psychological factors influence eating behaviour and food preferences. Food cravings are common in pregnancy and contribute to excessive gestational weight gain (GWG). Excessive GWG is present across all body mass index (BMI) categories and is associated with adverse outcomes. Outside of pregnancy, highly palatable food cues activate brain regions involved in reward and attention, which may influence eating behaviour and behavioural responses. However, brain and behavioural responses to food cues across pregnancy, and their association with psy…

Nutritional needs, resources, and barriers among unhoused adults cared for by a street medicine organization in Chicago, Illinois: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Those experiencing houselessness rely on obtaining food from community organizers and donations. Simultaneously, the houseless face disproportionally high rates of medical conditions that may be affected by diet including diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia. There is limited literature on the resources and barriers of the houseless community regarding optimal nutrition from an actionable perspective. Further, less data is available on how street medicine organizations may best impact the nutrition of the unhoused they serve. Elucidating this information will inform how organ

Opioid mediation of starch and sugar preference in the rat.

In our prior studies, administration of the opioid receptor antagonist naltrexone did not block conditioned preferences for a flavor paired with a preferred sugar solution over a flavor paired with saccharin. This may be because both training solutions were sweet, and their attractiveness was reduced by naltrexone. The present study compared the effects of naltrexone on preferences for flavors paired with sugar or starch drinks that have distinctive tastes to rats. Experiment 1 assessed naltrexone's effect on the preference for unflavored 8% cornstarch and 8% sucrose aqueous solutions/suspensi

Разработка Novel Digitals Eliction Measure for Clinical Use у пожилых людей с гематологическими злокачественными свойствами: Ценности-HM.

Submandibular gland removal decreases avoidance of bitter taste in mice.

Saliva plays a crucial role in digestion, including taste perception, food breakdown, chewing, swallowing, and bolus formation. Saliva is mainly produced by three pairs of major glands: parotid, submandibular, and sublingual glands. To evaluate the effect of each salivary gland on taste preference, we conducted a 48-h two-bottle preference test using mouse models in which the parotid glands (PGs), submandibular glands (SMGs), or sublingual glands (SLGs) were surgically removed. The taste preferences for the five basic tastes of the PG- and SLG-removed mice were similar to those of the control

Understanding school-going adolescent's preferences for accessing HIV and contraceptive care: findings from a discrete choice experiment among learners in Gauteng, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Many Adolescents in Sub-Saharan Africa do not access HIV and reproductive health services optimally. To improve uptake of these services, it is important to understand the Learners' preferences for how services are delivered so that implementation strategies can reflect this. METHODS: A discrete choice experiment (DCE) was used to elicit preferences. The DCE was completed between 07/2018 and 09/2019 and conducted in 10 high schools situated in neighbourhoods of varying socio-economic status (SES) in Gauteng (South Africa). Learners aged ≥ 15 years (Grades 9-12) were consented and

Food hypersensitivity.

Food allergy is one of several causes of adverse reactions to foods. The underlying immunologic mechanism varies from one manifestation to another, hence no current single laboratory test can be expected to be positive in every case. The diagnosis could be suggested by information gathered from the medical history or screening procedures, such as trials of elimination diets, the food/symptom diary, skin testing, and in vitro-specific IgE antibody measurement. All foods suspected by any of the aforementioned methods should be subjected to verification by appropriate elimination-challenge testin
