INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: A case of inadvertent self-introduction into the urethra of a folded contraceptive vaginal ring (NuvaRing) in a 22-year-old woman is reported.
METHODS: The patient presented with lower urinary tract symptoms, including dysuria, urgency, and terminal hematuria, that appeared a few minutes after insertion of the device.
RESULTS: The diagnosis was made by abdominal echography. The abdominal pelvic computed tomography scan confirmed the intravesical presence of the unfolded ring.

Toothbrush swallowing is a rare event. Because no cases of spontaneous passage have been reported, prompt removal is recommended to prevent the development of complications. Most swallowed toothbrushes have been found in the esophagus or the stomach of affected patients, and there has been no previously reported case of a toothbrush in the colon. Here, we report a case of a swallowed toothbrush found in the ascending colon that caused a fistula between the right colon and the liver, with a complicating small hepatic abscess. Suspected aspiration of a radiopaque foreign body can easily be confirmed by a chest film. We report a case of a boy with chest-film confirmed aspiration of a needle into his right main bronchus, in whom no needle was found during bronchoscopy. In retrospect, the boy had expectorated the needle without noticing it in the interval between making the diagnosis and the actual bronchoscopy. We propose to reconfirm aspiration of a radiopaque foreign body by fluoroscopy shortly before commencing bronchoscopy.

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic implantation of an adjustable gastric band is being performed widely. One potential complication is the transgastric migration of the band, that should be extracted.
METHODS: The authors report a series of 182 patients, followed prospectively, October 1996 - April 2002, who had undergone insertion of the Swedish adjustable gastric band. All implantations had been completed by laparoscopy alone.

We present a patient with ampullary pyogenic granuloma caused by spontaneous migration of a silicone lacrimal plug. A 43-year-old woman with severely dry eyes was treated with non-absorbable silicone punctal plugs insertion in both superior and inferior puncta. BACKGROUND: The piggyback system of contact lens correction is used in specialized cases to provide corneal protection with the soft lens and optical correction with a rigid gas-permeable lens. Controlling the position and amount of movement of the RGP lens over the soft lens is a critical factor in fitting the piggyback system.
METHODS: The movement of rigid gas-permeable lenses as part of a piggyback system was investigated under two different conditions. The RGP lens was placed on a smooth-surface soft lens and compared to a RGP lens placed on a dot matrix designed front-surface soft lens.

Intraperitoneal migration of an abdominally implanted cardioverter defibrillator is a complication not yet fully described. In a consecutive series of 195 patients, migration occurred between 1 and 20 months in 5 (8%) of the 63 patients in whom a subrectus abdomini placement of the generator was chosen. Vena cava filters are effective in preventing pulmonary embolism (PE) in patients with deep vein thrombosis or PE who either have contraindications to anticoagulation or have sustained a PE despite adequate anticoagulation. Although vena cava filters are not without complications, clinically significant morbidity and mortality are low. The use of vena cava filters as primary prophylaxis or therapy for deep vein thrombosis and PE should await the results of controlled trials.

The proximal migration of a ventriculoperitoneal shunt into the ventricles is very rare. Only 5 cases have been previously reported [4, 8, 10, 11]. We believe that this unusual phenomenon has not been well-studied in the literature. We report a case of a 16-month-old baby girl who suffered a shunt malfunction due to complete migration of the VP shunt into the lateral ventricle. This case and the other 5 cases are studied, and a possible cause is hypothesized. The group of patients at risk is also identified and methods of management are reported.
