PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy of medium-dose UVA1 phototherapy in patients with localized scleroderma.
METHOD: A controlled pilot study with medium-dose UVA1 (48 J/cm2) was performed. The results were evaluated by means of a skin score and two objective methods for quantifying sclerosis (cutometer and fast Fourier transform method). Patients were treated 4 times a week for 5 weeks. The follow-up period was 12 weeks.

PURPOSE: To characterize the corneal topographic features in a family with nanophthalmos.
METHODS: Two observational case reports and a review of the literature. Corneal shape was analyzed using a topographic modeling system (TMS) and an Orbscan topographic system, with further analysis based on Fourier series and Zernicke polynomials. A control group was used for comparison.

Videodigitised outlines of C6, C7, T1 and T2 vertebrae from 23 mice carrying the mutant gene undulated (un/un) and normal littermates (+/un) have been examined by Fourier analysis. There were large differences in shape between C6 vertebrae, smaller but significant differences in C7 and insignificant differences between T1s. The situation in T2 was complicated by the effects of the genetic background, but the effect of undulated was still significant. We conclude that the undulated gene shows significant pleiotropy in its effects even over this short length of the vertebral column.
