In addition to diagnostic and therapeutic problems of the bony spine injuries in childhood, questions of the participation of the growth plate arise and indicate the following treatment. In the last decade we treated 23 spine injuries, resulting after fall from height. Most of the cases showed single to multiple compression fractures of the anterior spine followed in a descending frequence by the lateral compression fractures, the disconnection ot the epiphyseal plate of the axis and the actual luxation fractures with injury of the stratum germinativum. In contrast to the prognostic favourable

Twenty-nine of 591 head-injured adults (4.9%) sustained concomitant injuries about the hip. Three hip injuries were undetected during initial hospitalization (10%). Sixteen patients (55%) developed varying amounts of heterotopic ossification about the injured hip. Eleven of 23 hips (41%) treated by nonoperative methods developed heterotopic ossification. Six hips underwent open reduction and five developed heterotopic bone (83%). The severity of injury, especially central acetabular and posterior fracture-dislocations, increased the occurrence and amount of heterotopic bone. Ipsilateral hemipl

Of 548 head-injured adults, 16 sustained injuries about the elbow (3%). Sixteen of 18 patients (89%) developed heterotopic ossification (HO). All elbows which had been dislocated developed new bone in the substance or adjacent to the medial or lateral collateral ligaments, or both. Some dislocations also developed significant HO in all planes. Final motion correlated with the amount of HO in the joint. Supracondylar fractures generally developed a moderate amount of anterior or posterior HO, or both. Motion was moderately compromised. Posteriorly located HO developed in olecranon fractures. Ra

A traumatic dislocation of the hip joint associated with an ipsilateral femoral shaft fracture is a rare injury resulting from severe trauma. Initially the dislocated hip joint is often unrecognized and consequently reduction is delayed. Early diagnosis and reduction of the hip joint improves the functional prognosis. The maximum functional recovery is possible only with greater awareness of this combined injury. Examination of the hip joints by clinical roentgenography in the critically injured patient, especially those with head injuries, or physical signs masked by extremity swelling, shoul

Harrington instrumentation was used to treat 23 injuries of the thoracic and lumbar spine accompanied by neural damage encountered during an 8 1/2-year period. The indication for the use of Harrington instrumentation is instability of the thoracic or lumbar spine due to trauma, laminectomy, or both. Of the 13 patients with incomplete neural lesions in the series, 12 improved. One of these was a cauda equina lesion. No patient in the series was neurologically worse after operation, in contrast to other reported series in which laminectomy alone was done. It is concluded that Harrington instrume

INTRODUCTION: Posterior dislocation of the hip associated with an ipsilateral subtrochanteric femur fracture is a rare and technically challenging injury pattern, most commonly seen after high-energy trauma such as road traffic accidents. The associated proximal femoral fracture disrupts the normal femoral lever arm, making closed reduction difficult or impossible and often necessitating open reduction. Delay in diagnosis or treatment may result in complications such as avascular necrosis of the femoral head, post-traumatic arthritis, sciatic nerve injury, and poor functional outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Acetabular fracture with concomitant hip dislocation (dislocation-fracture) is a high-energy injury requiring urgent management. Although less life-threatening than pelvic ring fractures, these injuries are often associated with ipsilateral knee trauma, which may be overlooked in the acute setting. Delayed recognition can lead to secondary meniscal and chondral damage.
PURPOSE: To investigate whether hip dislocation in the setting of acetabular fracture is an independent risk factor for ipsilateral knee injury.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 180 patients (146 men, 34 women;

A woman in her 40s was involved in a motor vehicle collision and sustained a closed Hawkins type IV talar neck fracture dislocation. The injury was treated with reduction, percutaneous pinning and spanning external fixation, followed by definitive treatment with total talus arthroplasty (TTA) 2 months following injury. This is a unique example of definitive management for a severe talar neck fracture dislocation with arthroplasty in the subacute setting. TTA is perhaps a primary option for these injuries at high risk for avascular necrosis, non-union, malunion and post-traumatic arthritis.

A 57-year-old man fell from a height of 6 m and injured his right foot. Imaging studies showed an uncommon injury; naviculocuneiform and calcaneocuboid joint fracture dislocations. He underwent a temporary fixation with Kirschner wires (K-wires), and the injured foot was immobilized with a below-knee splint. Weight-bearing was started gradually. The K-wires were removed at 8 weeks. Full weight-bearing was achieved 14 weeks after the operation. At 19 weeks, he returned to his carpentry job. At 1 year, he had no marked limitation of daily activities. Early recognition of these injuries is requir…

Scapula fractures are very rare, resulting from high-energy trauma and are mostly associated with other fractures of the locomotor system and injuries to the head, chest or abdominal organs. Most often, they are treated conservatively and the indications for surgical treatment are not yet clearly agreed. One of the conditions requiring surgical treatment is a scapula fracture with fragment migration into the thoracic cavity. In this paper, we are presenting an extremely rare, isolated scapula fracture, without injury to other parts of the locomotor system, with an intrathoracic fragment migrat
