Machine learning identification of neuroimaging signatures in young and middle-aged male patients with obstructive sleep apnea: a multimodal MRI study.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to develop and validate an integrated neuroimaging-based model for identifying severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) with severe oxygen desaturation (ODI ≥ 30 events/hour) in young and middle-aged male. A key goal was to characterize the neuroimaging signatures associated with the hypoxic burden of OSA. METHODS: Data from 111 patients were utilized. The initial feature set integrated 50 Gy matter structural indices, seven dynamic functional connectivity (dFC) temporal metrics, and key demographic factors (age, BMI). A Random Forest algorithm was employed for featur

From chewing to thinking: anatomical and neurophysiological links between mastication, cerebral blood flow, and cognition: a narrative review.

BACKGROUND: Mastication has increasingly been associated with cerebral blood flow (CBF) regulation and cognitive performance. Although the temporalis muscle and temporal lobe are supplied by distinct vascular territories arising from the external carotid and intracranial arterial systems, respectively, growing evidence suggests that chewing activity may indirectly modulate cerebral perfusion and higher brain functions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This narrative review integrates anatomical, neurophysiological, neuroimaging, and epidemiological evidence regarding the relationship between masticatio

Neuroimaging correlates of cognitive disorders secondary to electroconvulsive therapy: A systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: Electroconvulsive therapy is known as an efficient therapy, which is sometimes recommended for the management of severe and resistant depression. However, ECT is associated with cognitive adverse effects. The study of the neurobiological correlates of the cognitive adverse effects of ECT has been covered in few published reviews. However, these mechanisms have been investigated in an increasing number of studies in recent years, particularly in neuroimaging. This systematic review of the literature focuses on correlates between changes in structural or functional neuroimaging and i…

Structural and functional changes associated with functional/dissociative seizures: A review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: The term 'functional/dissociative seizures (FDS)' refers to a paroxysmal, transient clinical manifestation that may include motor, sensory, vegetative, psychological and cognitive signs, similar to the manifestations observed in epileptic seizures. In recent years, there has been an increase of literature in the field of brain imaging research on functional neurological disorders and, more specifically, on FDS. However, most of the studies have been carried out on limited samples. We propose an update of this review work by performing a systematic review of studies performed sinc

Emotional Regulation and Adolescent Concussion: Overview and Role of Neuroimaging.

Emotional dysregulation symptoms following a concussion are associated with an increased risk for emotional dysregulation disorders (e.g., depression and anxiety), especially in adolescents. However, predicting the emergence or worsening of emotional dysregulation symptoms after concussion and the extent to which this predates the onset of subsequent psychiatric morbidity after injury remains challenging. Although advanced neuroimaging techniques, such as functional magnetic resonance imaging and diffusion magnetic resonance imaging, have been used to detect and monitor concussion-related brai

Systematic Review of Different Neuroimaging Correlates in Mild Cognitive Impairment and Alzheimer's Disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a heterogeneous progressive neurocognitive disorder. Although different neuroimaging modalities have been used for the identification of early diagnostic and prognostic factors of AD, there is no consolidated view of the findings from the literature. Here, we aim to provide a comprehensive account of different neural correlates of cognitive dysfunction via magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), functional MRI (fMRI) (resting-state and task-related), positron emission tomography (PET) and magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) modalities acr

Functional brain reorganization after spinal cord injury: systematic review of animal and human studies.

Plastic changes of neural circuits occur after spinal cord injury (SCI) at various level of the central nervous system. In this review we will focus on delineating the pathophysiological mechanisms of the brain plasticity changes following SCI, based on the existing neuroimaging and neurophysiological evidence in experimental models and humans. In animal experiments, reorganization of the sensory topography as well as of the topographical map of primary motor and premotor cortices have been reported in several studies. Brain imaging revealed that cortical representation in response to spared f

An atypical case of FA2H-related HSP35 with subtle neuroimaging findings and a novel variant in a young adult with spastic paraparesis.

We report a young Indian woman with a homozygous deletion in FA2H manifesting with a progressive spastic paraparesis, skeletal deformities, and subtle oculomotor signs, thereby broadening the phenotypic spectrum of HSP35. Except for diffuse spinal cord atrophy in MRI, other investigations were non-contributory. Whole exome sequencing with mitochondrial analysis revealed a homozygous variant c.32_34delTCT (p.Phe11del) in FA2H gene in Exon 1 of chromosome 16-a likely pathogenic, autosomal recessive mutation (ACMG: PM2,PM4,PP4-Moderate). This report underscores the importance of considering FA2H-

Relationships Among Structural Neuroimaging and Neurocognitive Outcomes in Adolescents and Young Adults with Congenital Heart Disease: A Systematic Review.

Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most common cause of major congenital anomalies in the world. Disruptions to brain development in this population may impact cognitive outcomes. As individuals with CHD age, understanding of long-term neurocognitive and brain outcomes is essential. Synthesis of the current literature of brain-behavior relationships in adolescents and young adults with CHD is needed to understand long-term outcomes and identify literature gaps. This systematic review summarizes and integrates the current literature on the relationship between structural neuroimaging and neu

Brain-wide inferiority and equivalence tests in fMRI group analyses: Selected applications.

Null hypothesis significance testing is the major statistical procedure in fMRI, but provides only a rather limited picture of the effects in a data set. When sample size and power is low relying only on strict significance testing may lead to a host of false negative findings. In contrast, with very large data sets virtually every voxel might become significant. It is thus desirable to complement significance testing with procedures like inferiority and equivalence tests that allow to formally compare effect sizes within and between data sets and offer novel approaches to obtain insight into

Abnormalities of intrinsic regional brain activity in first-episode and chronic schizophrenia: a meta-analysis of resting-state functional MRI.

BACKGROUND: Resting-state functional MRI (fMRI) studies have provided much evidence for abnormal intrinsic brain activity in schizophrenia, but results have been inconsistent. METHODS: We conducted a meta-analysis of whole-brain, resting-state fMRI studies that explored differences in amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) between people with schizophrenia (including first episode and chronic) and healthy controls. RESULTS: A systematic literature search identified 24 studies comparing a total of 1249 people with schizophrenia and 1179 healthy controls. Overall, patients with schizoph

Effects of Motor Imagery and Visual Neurofeedback on Activation in the Swallowing Network: A Real-Time fMRI Study.

Motor imagery of movements is used as mental strategy in neurofeedback applications to gain voluntary control over activity in motor areas of the brain. In the present functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study, we first addressed the question whether motor imagery and execution of swallowing activate comparable brain areas, which has been already proven for hand and foot movements. Prior near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) studies provide evidence that this is the case in the outer layer of the cortex. With the present fMRI study, we want to expand these prior NIRS findings to the whole

Structural brain correlates of interpersonal violence: Systematic review and voxel-based meta-analysis of neuroimaging studies.

Owing to inconsistent nomenclature and results, we have undertaken a label-based review and anatomical likelihood estimation (ALE) meta-analysis of studies measuring the quantitative association between regional grey matter (GM) volume and interpersonal violence. Following PRISMA guidelines, we identified studies by searching 3 online databases (Embase, Medline, PsycInfo) and reference lists. Thirty-five studies were included in the label-based review, providing information for 1288 participants and 86 brain regions. Per region, 0-57% of the results indicated significant reductions in GM volum

Functional connectivity in incarcerated male adolescents with psychopathic traits.

The present study examined the association between psychopathic traits and functional connectivity in 177 incarcerated male adolescents. We hypothesized that psychopathic symptoms would be associated with functional connectivity within networks encompassing limbic and paralimbic regions, such as the default mode (DMN), salience networks (SN), and executive control network (ECN). The present sample was drawn from the Southwest Advanced Neuroimaging Cohort, Youth sample, and from research at a youth detention facility in Wisconsin. All participants were scanned at maximum-security facilities. Ps

Development of pacemaker properties and rhythmogenic mechanisms in the mouse embryonic respiratory network.

Breathing is a vital rhythmic behavior generated by hindbrain neuronal circuitry, including the preBötzinger complex network (preBötC) that controls inspiration. The emergence of preBötC network activity during prenatal development has been described, but little is known regarding inspiratory neurons expressing pacemaker properties at embryonic stages. Here, we combined calcium imaging and electrophysiological recordings in mouse embryo brainstem slices together with computational modeling to reveal the existence of heterogeneous pacemaker oscillatory properties relying on distinct combination

Advanced neuroimaging in systemic lupus erythematosus: identifying biomarkers for cognitive dysfunction.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive dysfunction (CD) is a common manifestation of central nervous system involvement in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Patients with SLE may develop CD insidiously at an early stage of the disease, and the lack of a standardized diagnostic test poses a major challenge in prompt diagnosis and management of these patients. This review summaries the current application of various magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques for patients with SLE complicated with CD, aiming to identify potential quantitative neuroimaging biomarkers for patients with SLE and CD.

Grey matter abnormalities in Tourette syndrome: an activation likelihood estimation meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Tourette syndrome (TS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder defined by the continual presence of primary motor and vocal tics. Grey matter abnormalities have been identified in numerous studies of TS, but conflicting results have been reported. This study was an unbiased statistical meta-analysis of published neuroimaging studies of TS structures. METHODS: A voxel quantitative meta-analysis technique called activation likelihood estimation (ALE) was used. The meta-analysis included six neuroimaging studies involving 247 TS patients and 236 healthy controls. A statistical threshold of

Alcohol and the Brain.

Alcohol works on the brain to produce its desired effects, e.g., sociability and intoxication, and hence the brain is an important organ for exploring subsequent harms. These come in many different forms such as the consequences of damage during intoxication, e.g., from falls and fights, damage from withdrawal, damage from the toxicity of alcohol and its metabolites and altered brain structure and function with implications for behavioral processes such as craving and addiction. On top of that are peripheral factors that compound brain damage such as poor diet, vitamin deficiencies leading to
